Re: Career Development Loan
what can i do but ring barclays when the ypla wont talk with applicants.
(Original post by evantej)

Stop overreacting. The YPLA is a government organisation who pay your interest while you study; they have absolutely nothing to do with Barclays. Ringing Barclays will do nothing to speed up the process. Threatening never to bank with them again is just absurd.
If Barclays have provided a letter saying you have been provisionally accepted, photocopy this and give it to your university. If they still persist on whining then just ignore them; you are not going to get chucked off your course at all... -
Re: Career Development Loan
I'm at strathclyde uni and i have spoke to finance department, my course co ordinator and the student advice department. No one knows how to hurry the ypla up but 7 weeks for a response is ridiculous. I cant find any way of talking to the ypla at all and all barclays say is they have put an urgent request in. What exactly does that mean has anyone got of there backside and phoned the ypla and said hey we have this urgent applicant hurry up!!!!

My course is 80% practical and i cant do any of the research because im not reistered and therefore not insured to be in the lab so yeh avantej might think im overreacting but time is ticking on i have work to be getting on with.
(Original post by melloj)
Isn't the YPLA seperate from Barclays??? What uni you at? surely they can give you extra time. If your loan has been accepted then whats the problem? Have you set up a meeting with your course leading and head of finance?? You need to get them on your side. There's no way I'd let them kick me out, they'd have to drag me kicking and screaming.
I got an extra 2 months out of my uni and that was before I got accepted for a loan.
If withdrawing from the course is immenant its time to get pro-active and go see somebody at your uni. -
Re: Career Development LoanThis is complete nonsense. The insurance issue with your university has absolutely nothing to do with you not paying tuition fees at all, and I am surprised you are gullible to believe them. What happens with people who choose to pay their tuition fees in instalments? Do not blame Barclays because your university is crap; and think punishing you will make you pay more quickly. My university let me use facilities a fortnight before I was even registered as a student...(Original post by lucysugden)

Re: Career Development Loan(Original post by melloj)
Just found out I've been provisionally accepted by Barclays. I'm very happy.
However they were keen to remind me I'm not there yet.
@sales 19
So what happens next? She did tell me in her very thick, 6000 miles away, Indian accent.
What are the possibilities of a reverse decision now, doesn't bare thinking about, but I gotta ask. If I'm provisionally accepted in all likelyhood, I'll get it???
I don't care how long it takes really, I've got a job lined up, as long as my fees a payed eventually, and it will get uni off my back.
@ melloj :- Now if ur loan has been provisionally accepted, u will be sent the Forms of agreement and barclays would simultaneously send a request to the YPLA for a final confirmation so once barclays recieves the forms of agreement and the confirmation, the loan funding would take place between 14-20 working days at the maximum time scales...u just have to keep phoning barclays time and again once u have sent the FOA's(customer credit agreement fom, customer authoraization and standing order mandate and the LP declaration form) and there is one form which should be signed and stamped by ur college (learning provider declaration form or otherwise known as course start notification)...Make sure u fill the form correctly and also make sure that u send a the documents back to barclays by recorded delivery and keep the recorded delivery trackin number with u and give it to barclays if they are unable to trace ur FOA's!!!...let me know if u have any queries!!!
Now the possibilities of ur loan getting declined are very very minimal!!!..If ur course is a full time course, please make sure that the course support dates on the apps is not more than exactly 12 months and if its a part time course YPLA supports the course only for 24 months!!. -
Re: Career Development Loan
you need to be registered with the university to be covered by there insurance and you cannot register until you make the first installment. Considering im going to be working with very dangerous micro orginisms being insured is pretty important. i am allowed to attend lectures and tutorials but not the lab. Personally i dont disagree with the uni i blame the ypla for taking so long.

Thanks for that!!! -

Got my loan paid in today

@lucysugden, you've obviously slipped through a crack. I'm sorry to say mine was sorted in a fortnight. Hopefully you got it sorted now? -
Re: Career Development Loan
Hi,
Completely new to the whole forum thing, but desperate for some help!!
I've just been accepted onto a course which starts in March, and have called through for an application pack from Barclays.
However they've asked for last 3 months of bank statements, and a couple of weeks ago I went over my overdraft by complete mistake and got charged - question - will this have a significant effect on my application and if so if I appealed the decision (assuming they rejected me on that basis) would I stand a good chance or should I try my chances with Co-op?
I'm working at the moment, and will have about 1.5k saved by the time my course starts, but won't be working during it.
I've got good credit histroy, have only one credit card (which I keep on top of), but 2 graduate overdrafts
Any pointers and general advice would be much appreciated - just getting really nervous as to whether barclays will straight reject me and i may be just wasting my time! -
Re: Career Development Loan
First of all don't make the mistake of thinking that because Co Op are cheap and cheerful, they are the ones to most likely lend. The reverse is true. Co Op are turning a lot of students away for varying reasons, myself included. I then got a loan from Barclays without fuss.
Barclays are a larger bank with more money and are one of few banks still lending generally. Be warned tho, despite my loan going through smooth and clean, during peak periods (around summer through to October) they have a bad reputation for making mistakes and general incompetence which will make the whole process painfully longer.
So, the general consensus on here is that Co-Op have a faster turn around but more likely to decline you. Barclays are more likely to lend but can take much longer.
Its hard to say whether you would get it because everyones different. Just try Both, Co Op first and then Barclays. -

Re: Career Development Loan
Barclays ask you to provide copies of original documents, such as passport. Does this include bank statements or can you send the originals ?
I applied to Co-op first. Telephoning their call centre was like phoning Loose Women. They wouldn't cover practically everything I put down, and I would have still needed to find £400 for the course as well, so I thought **** it and cancelled the application. What a load of pointless *******s that was. -
Re: Career Development LoanBarclays will not accept originals as they won't send them back. All you need to do is go to your nearest branch in person, take along your original documents (3 months consecutive bank statements and passport and driving licence) and ask them to copy and certify them while you wait. Don't forget to take your application form, they wont sign anything without seeing it, and take at least two forms of proof of ID.(Original post by Night Hawk)

Re: Career Development Loan
Does anyone know if you can get a CDL if you are studying as a UK student in an EU country?
Also, do they work like a SLC loan where you don't start paying back until you are earning? I'm guessing not? how much are the typical monthly repayments bearing in mind you are likely to be earning very little while studying full time?
Apologies if these questions have already been asked but I didn't want to sift through 25 pages! -

Monthly repayments depend upon the amount borrowed and the duration of the loan; I took the maximum £10,000 over five years (longest period available) and my monthly repayments are something like £220. If I wanted to repay it more quickly then the total cost would be lower, but the repayments would be significantly higher.
You are expected to make repayments irrespective of your income, but you defer payments on a case-by-case basis. For example, if you are unemployed and claiming Jobseeker's Allowance, claiming working-tax credits, and there is a third condition which I cannot remember off the top of my head. This deferment of payment is formal. But what I meant by case-by-case basis is the fact that you apply for a deferment in advance and the bank has three time periods. The first deferment is for five months. The second and third are for six months. So in total you can defer for a year and a half, but you have to make separate applications for each one of these periods. I suppose quite a few people will be doing this at the moment, even if they are in work (i.e. they simply do not earn enough to repay the loan and still have enough to live on).
You can get a career development loan to study in the EU; I asked last year when I was going through the process myself.
I hope this has helped. -

Did you get one through Barclays? I bank with Barclays anyway so logically I'd approach them first. -
Re: Career Development Loan
I applied to Barclays 2 weeks ago and I was told to take my passport to a branch for confirmation. I did that but heard nothing from them. I called them today and was told I passed the credit check and my application will be passed to the processing team. Not sure what can go wrong now, hopefully nothing. I applied earlier in September to both banks but got rejected. I have an account with Barclays. Can my application still be rejected now it's been passed to the processing team

Re: Career Development LoanNever mind I called again today and I've been accepted. SWEET. Just need to wait for the forms to sign.(Original post by becknise)
