Economics is terribly hard and boring by the way, I am dropping it after Christmas and doing something easy.
I dropped it right away
Got the letter saying I lost permission to proceed (for not turning up to three tutorials) after reading week

Word of warning.

St Andrews is not what you think, if you are coming for tradition and prestige you are better off going somewhere else, (you will not find Brideshead here). The place is going down hill. Bankrupt, sold one hall (Hamilton possibly one of the most prestigious halls and currently taking offers on another). Can’t subsidise sports teams have to rely on local bars for finance. Place is so boring after three years going into Tesco Metro and having to put up with queues out the door to buy a bottle of red so you can go to a house party (because all the bars shut a 6pm) where you see the same people most of which are so boring you probably cant be bothered dealing with anyway you wish you had transferred after you’re fist year. However, if you like golf and fancy yourself as the next Tiger head on up to the village and you’ll have you’re pick of damp fields to wander round in wearing some overpriced piece of crap you bought from the Royal and Ancient and sprouting rubbish about how wonderful the Bop is on a Friday night.

I wonder why, if you weren't content with the 'small town' life, you came to St Andrews.

All the bars shut at 6pm? How strange... the Tudor pub doesn't stop serving alcohol until 1am, course I wouldn't know about other pubs as that's the one I frequent. And offf-sales at the union has shorter queues for alcohol than tescos

I know the bars don’t shut at 6pm that would be disastrous, you’ve generally got another 6 hours of drunken debauchery. As for the union off-sales the alcohol is reasonably priced in regard to spirits and beer however the wine (of which I’m quite a fan) is of poor quality and ridiculously over priced. If I were to be so bold as to suggest a nightout it would have to be the cheese and wine soc every second Wednesday. For any would-be St A applicant, this event allows one to socialise with others who to borrow their wardrobe from Rupert the Bear (of whom I’m quite a fan) and frequent Ma Bells before heading on over to the Westport for a quick tickle before hitting a house party in Hope Street where one can dance the night away on a thick pile rug and drink the marvellous plonk acquired in the restaurant of the Royal and Ancient. Essentially, I would argue this is the pinnacle of St Andrews life, because as they say here in the village a 'life without St Andrews is not a life at all.'

This is such a random question but how far is the local hospital from St Andrews?

Ignore Medici...

Standing in the queues in Tesco for a bottle of wine when there's an off-licence right beside Tesco? And with the exception of the union, all the off-licences I can think of close at 10pm, which is also the same time that Tesco stops selling booze...
And what bars close at 6pm?!

Ma Bells and the Westport...two of the most expensive pubs in town...I would comment, but I'm going to restrain myself.

I know the bars don’t shut at 6pm that would be disastrous
Then...why did you say above that "all the bars shut at 6pm"? You're contradicting yourself. My advice? Quit digging a hole for yourself

sprouting rubbish about how wonderful the Bop is on a Friday night
Wait a minute...you actually know people who think the bop is wonderful? :toofunny:
Even the people I know who regularly go don't think it's all that great.

sold one hall
...will I or won't I mention Hepburn Hall? Oops, already did.

This is such a random question but how far is the local hospital from St Andrews?
Uh...hospital, hospital, hospital...I know where the health centre is, but not the hospital...*gets map of town given out in first year* (yes, I still have that map )
It's not too far away - it's to the south-east of South Street, just off Abbey Walk. It's actually closer to the town than Albany Park (the only halls of residence to the east of town)

lol! thanx
Dalimyr could you please explain your reference to 'Hepburn Hall' for me?

Hospital is in Dundee

I understand that Hall placement is on a lottery basis, but when does one apply for accomodation? As I have an unconditional offer and will probably accept, does that mean I could start filling out the forms and hear fairly soon?

Cheers

Regarding the Scottish uni system (specifically St. Andrews):

As I will be reading IR, I understand there are specific modules to be taken during the 1st and 2nd year, and honours modules for 3rd and 4th year. In the 3rd year, one has the flexibilty of taking 40 credits (if Im not mistaken) outside IR.

I have an American friend who is at St. Andrews and is taking IR, History, English classes (if my memory is correct). Is this because my friend applied directly to St. Andrews and did not committ to a certain subject in the application process? Or are all 1st years (or 2nd years) able to take classes outside of their course? I have tried to research this on the St. Andrews website, but have had no luck. I'll try to call them up tomorrow.

Thanks in advance

I understand that apart from my course (IR), I am able to take two other courses in my 1st and 2nd year. Is there a specified list of classes that I am allowed to take? Is this choice restricted to the Arts Faculty?

I have tried to access the course/module catalogue but the link is either missing or faulty.

Thanks in advance

You wil receive an entrants pack detailing all this, and will give you info on how to open your computer account etc. The module choosing will be done next August to September.
Reply 73
How likely is it that someone who really doesn't want to will end up sharing a room?
Reply 74
I think you can request not to share a room in the accomodation form, but Im not sure if all requests go through
Reply 75
Well.. I said that I didn't mind sharing a room on my form and I'm in a single room, so I guess if you ask for a single room then you'll get it.

I've been reading about these formal dinners. Where do these usually take place? In each hall? It would seem that St. Salvator's would have them (looks very posh inside).
Reply 77
Once a student is allocated to a certain hall for the first year, does the student live in that hall for all four years?
Reply 78
No, most people move into a shared house from the second year onwards. This is organised by the student.
Reply 79
How many BIG files do you have to use per year? also, how hard is it to be able to get accomodation throughout the 4 years instead of moving out?
