Is UCLan's gym any good? I know there's a few around the Preston area, but this one is, obviously, easy to get to and it's only £100 from now til Sept.

Anybody got any experiences?
I remember Exeter's being quite good.

Can anybody shed any light on the Cambridge gym scene? I would have assumed that the gym would have been pretty good given the quality of rowers/rugby players there but so far all I have been met with is disappointment.

I have heard of a place called Kelsey Kerridge or something like that which seems good but a little pricey.
Bristol is ****e

The uni gym, that is...there are a couple alright non uni ones around

Then there is empire where the big boys train (grimey as **** though)
UCL!

UCL!

As I mentioned earlier: I seriously hope not. What do you think makes UCL gym so good?

Bath - England Rugby team train there regularly - 'nuff said!
When I looked at Stirling it had a great freeweights room, and I was told there was a similar one on the floor above it.

Aberdeen is supposedly going to be second only to Loughborough in terms of sporting facilities when the new complex is completed, so I'd imagine its gym is decent.

Glasgow wasn't great when I saw it.

Dundee was good but too small IMO

Aberystwyth I remember being unimpressed by...

and as for Bangor... well I've seen worse... and the DW Sports gym isn't much better - everything is at least 10 years old, and there's not much of it :frown:
Edinburgh is supposed to have an excellent gym

Here's a list of some universities with decent looking weight rooms (pics included):

those pics are not always the actual uni gyms. For example i got to swansea uni and its got a pick there of an awesome looking setup, but that is not in the uni gym. It might be somewhere in the sports centre, but not in the gym, not easy/obvious access.

Then you go and train in the proper weights room with the true athletes, not in the TechnoGym/Life Fitness showroom. I don't understand the problem.

Thank you, I will take both.

The annoying thing is that even though such gyms are one in a thousand in the UK, they seem to be a standard in the US where not just every university but also many high schools have such (and much bigger) weight rooms:

The room i go to has 2 squat racks, 2 benches with fixed racks, 4 other benches, smith machine, 10'-10' matted area for deadlifting. 3 cable machines. 8ish olympic bars, atleast 600kg+ of free weights and lots of dumbells.

It does also have all the technoGym stuff in there.

I didnt say it wasnt a well stocked weight room. Just that the weights in the photo on the page you linked was not in the uni gym.

They didn't have deadlifting platforms when I started uni but they put them in last year, they don't have enough plates if you are strong and only one squat rack though.

The good thing though, is that nobody ever uses the squat rack since they're too focused on the benches.

That, or people seem to prefer squatting in the smith machine (why?).

I wish we had a power cage.
