phenol and sodium are both solids at room temp and consequently will not react together.

hi

if you add soium hydroxide (i think thats what you mean), a phenol will not react with it. this is because it is not a strong enough acid. The order of acids strengths go:

Ethanol < water < phenols < carboxyllic acids

hence only carboxillic acids will react with NaOH, to give a salt (e.g. sodium phenoxide) and water.

The reason for the varying strength of them is because of the stability of the ion it forms when it dissociates, carboxyllic acids are more stable because the negative charge is delocalised throughout the ion making it more stable; the equilibrium moves to the right and more of the ion is made, resulting in a stornger acid. carboxyllic acid also can react with carbonates, making them fizz (CO2 is evoked)

(excuse the bad spelling)

hope that helps!!
