I did an EPQ on the history of general anaesthesia and got an A*, so I can probably be useful.

what does everyone think about the question "What's good for me today, is bad for me tomorrow, and good for me the day after" Its about the role of the media in science, and 'common advice' from society such as that aspirin iss good for you and then aspirin is bad..?

EPQ is not available for private entry, so if your school doesn't offer it, you can't do it.

At least that's what I think so.

Yeah, your right - I've just done some research. However, if I raised this at my council meeting and managed to get a number of students involved can we do it if the teacher agrees? Or would it take a lot of time and 'money' on my 6th forms behalf? Or is it too late

Erm I have no idea. :erm: Some of your teachers might have to be trained from the centre (be it AQA or Edexcel) to be able to supervise the projects.

    Of course 'money' as well.

But if you really want to do it, do raise it with your council. Most people do it in their A2 year, so it might not be that late.

Which school do you go to? :eyeball: They don't even teach History?!! :lolwut:

Nice to see this thread appear, we just got briefed on how to start the EPQ a couple weeks ago. My topic is on motor neuron disease, and if a cure could ever be created; just starting the research atm.

If money is involved I doubt they will do it.

It's a sixth form and there wasn't enough student who opted to do History, Textiles, Art and English Language so they don't any of those subjects.

Clearly, my 6th form is retarded. It's too late to go elsewhere so I guess I'm stuck here even though I hate it but :dontknow:

Lots of threads popping up at the moment, so here's a place to discuss your EPQ!

I did my EPQ on malaria and got an A* so if you have any questions you think I can help with please quote me
I quoted you! Erm, how did you structure it if you dont mind me asking?

    thanks!

Structure depends v much on what you're doing! But I did like introduction - then several areas that I had headings for e.g. "Pathophysiology" "preventative methods" etc and then a conclusion.

Dementia is a v big topic but lots to talk about and lots to EVALUATE (the evaluative parts get you more marks than descriptive parts) but I can't really structure your essay for you lol as I don't know what you're doing/what you want to focus on/am not going to do your work for you.

no what i mean is: should i start by focusing on the disease and what it is, then go on to how it affects the individual and then the reaction of other people to it, what they say in the media and stuff like that

Re: The "I'm doing an Extended Project related to medicine" thread
    To the person above me
It is a good area to look at, i would maybe suggest looking at a wider area topic such as how can family members/friends and non-medical environmental factors (such as music) affect treatment/recovery of a patient.

I am also doing an EPQ, i am currently torn between two things. I have strong ideas about the epidemiology of autoimmune disease & linked in with that is the hygiene hypothesis which is very controversial.

However in the back of my head Alzheimer's/Dementia has a strong place as well. With a higher % of people being diagnosed each year and one of the most interesting areas of research in medicine it is also a strong candidate.

To anyone who has done the EPQ before is being specific and controversial good. Or is it more beneficial to do it on a rapidly expanding area of research that will affect a lot of people?

Just to point something out from anaphylactic's post about BSMS' stance:

'nor will it be acceptable for candidates to offer an Extended Project and an A-level in one and the same subject'

to me this seems like most medicine related projects will end up being a bit of a waste

At the Nottingham open day someone asked and she said even though it's not going to be a major thing (as not everyone has the chance to do it), if you can do it and get 3 A's still, do it!

Not sure what to do mine on though!

If you do it on something "scientific", how do you turn it into something with arguments and evaluations without it just being a list of facts??

considering science is nothing to do with 'facts' - quite easily i would imagine
