Please can someone tell me how to say 'I am going to the swimming pool' in German? So far I have:

    Ich werde das schwimmbad

    oder...

    Ich bin ins Schwimmbad gehen

    Thank you
Well ... neither 'Ich gehe ins Schwimmbad.' or 'Ich werde ins Schwimmbad gehen.' Though the first one is present tense and the second one is future both can be used to utter the intention to visit the swimming pool, the first one meaning you'll leave right now (except for if you say 'Ich gehe morgen ins Schwimmbad.' )

Thank you! I originally thought it should be Ich gehe ins Schwimmbad (or Ich gehe zur Swimmbad, but evidently not ), but then I decided to check with an online translator and it confused me... Cheers!

Online translators are usually a bad idea!

Do you mean when to use each one? Wikipedia shows a table demonstrating when to use which one with which case.

The online translator got confused because "to be going to do sth." means "etwas tun werden" in German.

"ins" is a composition of "in" and "das" ("das" because "Schwimmbad" is neuter). It is possible to say "zum Schwimmbad" ("zu"+"dem") too but we usually say "ins". To be very precise you can use "zum" if you are only going to the building and "ins" if you are actually entering the building.

You really mean with "swimming pool" a public swimming pool (swimming bath), right? There are different translations for "swimming pool".

'zur' is a contraction of 'zu der', like 'zum' is a contraction of 'zu dem'. Since 'Schwimmbad' is a neuter noun (dative: das --> dem), you could only use 'zum'

EDIT: Yeah, online translators are very bad: Google being the worst, unfortunately (in my experience, anyway ). If you want to look up single words, http://www.dict.cc/ is excellent and http://dict.tu-chemnitz.de/ is very good for verb conjugation

Thanks for this - and yes, I meant as in public swimming pool.

Was meinst du mit 'durchfiel'?

Someone else used that word here before, so I thought it would be the time to correct it.
