Bkay- i went and saw the lady who deals with the placements today....its based in 6 scenario's in one of which i got the impression is: what would you expect your odp to b like if you came onto the ward as a patient?
She said it was a new way of doing it this year, i found her very easy to talk to so i hope il see her again.

Im gonna research more on what the others have suggested too.

Hope your interview goes well on 20th xxxx

Don't give up! I read in your previous post this wasn't your first choice of profession but if now after research you've found this is what you want to be.. keep re-applying! I was turned down by ny first choice too and it is disheartening but september isn't far off now and fresh applications through ucas can be made again for 2012 entries, some of which start earlier in the year/spring etc which might appeal to you. I don't know your personal circumstances, but if you're able to move away to a further university this might aid you in securing a place next year. I had to do this and now I am extremely happy I did! Gl and I hope you get some good news in the near future x

biggest risk in theatre is pathogens. once th skin is cut patients at risk. anisthetic is 1 in every 200,000 risk unless underlying health problem. liver dissorders would be high risk under anisthetic. someone with low blood pressure is good because they wont bleed out. high blood pressure th patien would be on some kind of beta bockers so you would need platlets.
I know this comment was made a while ago, but I've had to make comment on it. Liver disorders are one risk factor that makes anaesthetic more risky, but there are quite a few more. Going on about blood pressure is all good and well, but I doubt its needed in an entrance interview to operating department practice and you need to know what youre talking about. It's not as simple as low BP is good because patients won't bleed, low BP can also mean organs aren't adequately perfused and this can cause a lot of problems. Similarly, someone with high BP, may or may not be on beta blockers, but theyre not the first line reccomended treatment for hypertension and the use of platelets has nothing to do with hypertension. If anyone has any questions about peroperative stuff drop me a line, I'll be happy to answer any questions, if I don't know the answer straight away I can find out quite easily as I have worked in theatres for a while.

    Hi,

I have applied for sept 2011. Which is degree level. Dips finish April this year. You will need level III to enter at this level. I am still awaiting a decision. Admissions informed me decisions will be coming through in a couple of days. There are 50 and its very competitive. I am currently on Access subjects including psychol, Health Science and Biology A level, I also have GCSEs Additional Science and maths and english. I am currently a support worker working with vulnerable adults and have done this job for six and half years. I only have this uni down. All students have had their offers, interviews and secured places and im feeling the pressure. But I have stayed true to what I want. I have worked hard to get where I am now. They have events such as observation days in theatre for the day and there was one in January. There is a talk in april, but try and track events. I have also registered with the the Royal College of ODP and there are quaterly journals relating to this. I have been preparing for an interview because I know they are taking place throughout March. I have focused on infection control and wound management. Also been reading lots on areas of application. I specifically want to work in Trauma, critical care, transplant. When I went to open days they advised me that my job will secure an interview. But from tracking other applicants a lot have deferred from last year, plus there will be deferrals from April i wreckon with it going to degree. Anyhow I hope this helps you. good luck
Glad u are doing well but don`t you have to be a student or qualified ODP to join The royal college of Operating dept practitioners as on the form they ask for your university number and your course leader? I`m confused on that!!!!! As you say your still awaiting a response????

When talking about when you've used initiative this means for example when you have implemented a new system, trained staff, took control in a crisis ect. Iv been reading and preparing all my life for this opportunity. talk about how you want to progress ie masters,. I am going to talk what areas of application, ie transplant, trauma, critical care. building a good portfolio of proceedures. I would like to specialise in transplant and get on the helicopters but critical care and plastic surgery/cosmetic surgery. My ultimate goal anisthesiologist. that would take an md, masters then further four years med school. However you can do md, masters ie respiratory management and do four years on th job traing and become a non medical anisthesist. they are paid 100k a year. wow!!! but private health care is where its at they are paid 10k more than nhs. You have to practice for at least 2 yrs. dont forget when they ask you what you hope to achieve at the end of course to say degree and registration on the HPC.

Where u want to work??? . The additional modules for degree are pharmocology, health social care, holistic care of periop patient. we shadow midwives and social workers on placement. how diverse is that
I believe that the 2 year course also shadows midwives as the use of anaesthesia is the first module of placement!!! and year 2 you have to take the pharmacology exam...... 1st year 5 hour exam on a&p

I've never heard of the Royal College of ODP's, there is the AfPP - Association for peroperative practitioners, you can join them as a student member, details are on their website.

The comment someone else has made that anaesthetic assistants (the non medical anaesthetist someone described) does not get paid anywhere near 100k, thats more the top end of an NHS consultants wage. They are paid on band 8 of the AfC payscales.

Yeah there is a website called CODP. I tried to subscribe but you have to be a student or registered ODP in order to gain membership, so I will be applying next week when I enrol and finally get my student card

    Hey everyone,

I'm thinking of applying for 2012 entry. Trying to figure out where to apply and if this is definitely what I want to do because I've only recently been making the decision. Thinking of applying to Edge Hill, UCLan, and Sheffield Hallam. Deciding on others still. Sheffield Hallam has a really good sectionfull of info, videos etc about being an ODP. Definitely give it a look.
