Where do you 'live out' in Cardiff? What is it like?
Welcome to the Cardiff University forum: where prospective and current students can discuss anything about Cardiff University.

I hadn't really thought about walking around at night, interesting information guys.
I did walk up towards Roath Park and I like that area (I was testing out how far University Hall was but realised when I got there that it wasn't that nice- in my opinion). -

What course are you doing? Would help to give you a better idea of what is around that area. -
Re: Where do you 'live out' in Cardiff? What is it like?
Most students, regardless of their course stay within the confines of Cathays Terrace, Crwys Road and City road. The houses within this triangle will all be terraced houses of varying quality. Prices are slightly higher and reflect the location nearby to the Union and University buildings. There are some gems and some shockers within this area - I would not recommend actually living on Cathays Terrace, Crwys Road or City road as they are busy but the rest of this triangle is vibrant and within easy walking distance of anywhere.
Typical streets in this area include Minny Street and Colum Road. This area will be predominantly students. Plenty of cafes and pubs are dotted around this area and the Union is nearby. A Lidl can be found near Cathays Terrace, a Coop on Crwys Road and Tesco Metro on Salisbury Road.
For English, you may consider moving West of Cathays Terrace and settling in Maindy. Roads such as Brithdir Street and Llantrisant street will be slightly quieter and the ratio of students to residents decreases. The swimming pool and gym are readily available and all of the aforementioned pubs, cafes and shops are still easily within walking distance. It may take an extra 10 minutes to get to lectures.
Also a further 10 minutes from the student triangle is Roath. This area is not as near to Roath Park or University Hall as you suggested. Albany Road is the main road running through this area. Move away from Albany Road and you get quieter terraces such as Arabella Street or Kincraig Street.
Cardiff as a whole is a brilliant city. It has all of the facilities of a larger city yet it remains small. Most things such as the town centre, Arena, Musuem and Stadium are within walking distance. It is ethnically diverse and provides something for everyone of all ages and ethnicities. Although there are crimes reported, these are no different to any other city of the same size. Stick to the student areas and you will be largely trouble free. Rougher areas of the city tend to be to the West. -

Re: Where do you 'live out' in Cardiff? What is it like?
I'd say Roath park is quite far out to live, for most students, but others don't mind. If you cycle, there's a lot more open to you. I live on Keppoch street, which is just off City Road. City Road is the sort of Cathays/Roath divide and anything on the Roath side [look towards Albany Road] you can get a lot more for your money, and there's a lot less crime. It's an easy 15min walk to uni, but everyone gets into their heads its ages away
