What is the average age for Master Students at UK?
    Hi,

Can anyone help me? I am starting a Master in Human Resources or Managerial psychology this year 2011, I am 28 years old. I would like to know which is the average age people start this masters? Will I be the more mature one?

My concern is because I have 4 years HR work experience, 2 of the being in charge of a HR area. Will my classmates have some experience?

By the way I am considering studying at Manchester university, Lancaster University or the University of Leeds.

    Thank you very much!

Hi, I think it all depends on the masters that you are doing. Some are more generally and some, like yours, are career focused. As a result of that I think it would be very difficult to say the ages of the students. However at 28 you will definitely not feel that you are in classes with a load of kids. If that is what you are worried about. I guess it depends, but on average I would say the vast majority of masters students would be 22 - 25.

I studied at Lancaster and while it is probably the best University of those 3. They are all fantastic. One thing I would say though is that Lancaster is a small town, and you can feel very hemed into a small town there. So if where you will be living is important and you would like more variety I would go for one of the other two.

Why does this question keep coming up?:sigh: Even if we could give you a definite answer, it wouldn't actually help you because what you really want to know isn't how old UK masters students are on average but whether at 28 you're likely to be the oldest person on your course, which has little to do with average ages...
The answer to the question you presumably mean to ask is 'possibly, though even if you are the oldest it won't be by much, and the other students on your course won't necessarily notice (or care) that you're older'.

True that. They won't care and at 28 I would say that it is unlikely that you would be IMO.

At 28, I'd say it's very unlikely you'll be anyway near the oldest. On my MA course we ranged in age from 22 to over 60. We all got along just fine.

Thank you all for the comments, the truth is that I don´t care much about if others in the class think I am the oldest, what I care about is if I will be surrounded only by young people with no work experience, just as sweet7 said.
In Peru no one starts a master at 22 or 23, people start at 26 minimum, but I don´t know how that goes at UK.
I like variety, but it would be better if there is at least a range of people ages with a group with some years of work experience...

Generally speaking there is a lot more diversity with post grad study. E.g. you'll get others from all over the world and maybe from different disciplines etc.

From UK students it tends to be mainly ages 22-27.
Students from overseas are often older, it depends on the subject. In some subjects you will have people who have 10+ years of work experience coming back to do a masters.

I knew several MSc students who were 35-45.
