Re: University of Bath freshers 2011-2012
Could I have some advice please:
I'm an outgoing kind of person who envisages room parties & sitting in the kitchen at 2am and the like....so from reading this thread I'm thinking Westwood, but the only problem is the communal bathrooms (/fumes from the nearby pharmacology department). Are they grim/an annoyance? Are the any en-suite rooms in the "cheaper" blocks? & are Marlborough/Solsbury quite social?
    Thanks

To my knowledge the only places with ensuite are marl/sols, woodland court and poldon court. Of those 3 given your description you would be best of with marl/sols. Definately avoid Poldon (its fairly high proportion of postgrads/mature students and have stricter noise policies), I have heard woodland court are stricter about flat parties because more security around there etc so even though they have more people per kitchen marl/sols probably have more of the flat parties. Of non-ensuite accommodation both westwood and norwood are 'enhanced standard' which partly means fewer people to a bathroom (1:4 or 1:5), the bathrooms do get cleaned regularly and I haven't heard too many complaints, but it all depends on who you are put with (for the social side as well). I haven't heard anything about fumes....westwood is quite spread out though over different blocks so maybe I just don't know people in the block near the pharmacology dept whatever that one is, but then again surely there are health and safety regs about that kind of thing?? If your the type of person who does like going out you could suit norwood too....so long as you dont mind background noise when your working, so thats another sort of westwood level equivalent.

Is Woodland court a social house? And would you rather Woodland court or Norwood house? And lastly ARE THERE LOTS OF HOT GUYS IN BATH?

From what I've heard, but I dont know many people from either so this is second hand, woodland are really sociable during the day I think they have 13 to a kitchen and actually have a sitting area which most (possibly all) other accommodation doesn't have so more likely for people to sit around for a chat or work in communal areas, but its a lot stricter for things like flat parties so they will tend to go elsewhere for evenings. Norwood, the people I know all say its mostly people that will go out a lot, so sociable in that way, not sure about day to day. Personally I'd rather woodland, because I would get annoyed with the noise from parade at night if I was in Norwood, but depends what you want. Also woodland is ensuite, norwood isn't so that might be something else to consider. Erm for guys, don't have many unis to compare it to but its big on sport here so your obviously going to get the fair share of sporty guys.

I like being in marl/sols personally, if I was applying again I would still apply for it! I love having my own ensuite, whilst people I know without say they rarely have to wait for the bathroom and they haven't had any problems, I just like knowing it will always be free, and also in your first year when you don't know who you are going to live with I think its one less thing to worry about (the state of your bathroom I mean). There is 7 to a flat as well (5 in the ground floor ones), I think thats quite a nice number, although there are pro's and con's with bigger flat sizes. Woodland court I think have 13 to a kitchen....I've not actually been over there but one of my flat mates spends a fair amount of time over there, and whilst they say its nice, and there kitchen is bigger than ours I don't think it's twice the size, which I think you would want it to be, based on what our kitchen is like when a lot of us are cooking at the same time. Compared to westwood (or the parts of westwood I've visited, without having an ensuite the rooms are a bit bigger, pretty sure the rooms are the same size only a corner of ours is being used by the ensuite, and they have a similar number of people to a kitchen (there is 2 kitchens on a floor of westwood so the figures on the website can be a bit misleading) so I think that is the closest non ensuite equivalent (just realised I've gone somewhat off topic). Marl/Sols are still relatively new though so a bit more modern than westwood/eastwood, and we have floor length windowa windows so lots of light in our rooms and kitchen which is nice....although we are all dreading summer in the kitchen because its going to be like cooking in a sauna because there is so much glass....but I think that wouldn't be too bad if you were on one of the different sides we are more open to the sun. Basically it depends what you want, but I think marlborough and solsbury are quite a nice compromise.

thanks v. much for the info (repped btw), think youve convinced me to apply for Marl/Sols. Are you enjoying psychology at Bath btw?

no problem and yeah I'm really enjoying psych at Bath the departments really friendly, and I like the fact its quite small, compared to other unis as a department, because it means you get to know the other people on your course a lot more quickly. Feel free to let me know if you have any specific qs

Yeah supposedly woodland and marl/sols are always oversubscribed, but (at least when we applied) it was first come first serve so if you get your application in asap after it opens you should hopefully be fine. I hadn't firmed Bath until the day or day after accommodation opens and you have to wait a day or two to get your login for the accommodation portal and I still got my first choice of marl/sols which is supposed to be equally oversubscribed, but the sooner the better!

Ooh! Yeah, it's not exactly a popular choice but I'm really excited about it! When I was choosing I was really torn between German and Russian and German and Politics - I'm glad there's loads of Politics modules in the language course though

When how did you get the login? Because I firmed Bath a couple of weeks ago, and I haven't heard anything back from them at all...
