I'll put a word in too if you want guys, I wouldn't mind the option of a little online gaming
Seems like a few people would e-mail them, hopefully we can get something sorted. -

Should we come up with a kinda generic email to send so they realise it's a group effort? -
Re: The Internet and Gaming at Newcastle University
If I'm gonna take an xbox and tv for a room in Richardson Road, am I gonna have to buy a table to put them on, or will there be something in the room to put the xbox and TV on? And if I am gonna have to buy a table to put them on will it take up a load of space relative to the size of the room?

Re: The Internet and Gaming at Newcastle University
E-mailed them Sunday night and got this reply at 4 this afternoon:
Hello
It is not previously possible to connect to any online games or connect games consoles to the University network, which is provided for Academic use only. You will find that many applications that work on a commercial ISP do not work with our network.
The University network docking service (both in halls and on campus) is subject to a strict firewall policy: this is to protect the security and stability of the halls network; the wider campus network, and the security of all network users. Applying exceptions to this policy both weakens its effectiveness, and requires maintenance downtime which disrupts the docking service for all users.
As a result, we rarely relax these rules, and only when we consider there to be a strong, academic based case for the change in question.
However if you can tell us which ports your games console requires we will look into this request for you.
Regards,
So does anyone know what ports Xbox live uses? and Psn for the PS3 users. -

If you have a firewall or network hardware, such as a router, you might need to make a configuration change in order for your Xbox 360 console to communicate with Xbox LIVE. This configuration change is sometimes called "opening ports" or "port forwarding."
Xbox LIVE requires the following ports to be open:
Port 88 (UDP)
Port 3074 (UDP and TCP)
Port 53 (UDP and TCP)
Port 80 (TCP) -
Re: The Internet and Gaming at Newcastle UniversityDon't know brah, I'm guessing the more ports you open and stuff, the higher the risk to security...(Original post by Kylepott)
I thought about the MS site as soon as i posted.
It's not looking good, there must be a reason they haven't done it before. Anybody know if one of these ports can be dangerous to the network if its opened?
I've just sent an email anyway, see what I hear back... -
Re: The Internet and Gaming at Newcastle University
Seems they have a done a U-turn and will definitely now allow online gaming unless we persuade them it is academic...

Re: The Internet and Gaming at Newcastle University

I emailed them last night, with information of the ports that would need opening for Xbox Live and PSN, as well as a strong argument in favour of it, such as allowing people from different halls to socialise through gaming, and allowing people to keep in touch with friends and family back home etc. It was quite well thought out tbh...
They emailed back this morning asking for my login and student number. Am I in trouble? lol... -

If Steam is blocked as well, any chance of mentioning the ports for Steam too for us PC folk whilst you're emailing them?

Re: The Internet and Gaming at Newcastle University
If you e-mailed using your personal e-mail account then that is why they want your log in details. Just making sure your a student.
Its not looking good so far, thinking about it, i highly doubt we will be able to torrent or anything on the network :/
Lack of free films and music for me! -
