    Acetylcholine is released by the greater splanchnic nerve onto the adrenal gland to stimulate adrenaline release by the medulla in response to elevated sympathetic outflow, promoting systemic and metabolic effects which would be appropriate in such circumstances. Acetylcholine also acts to vasodilate in the adrenal cortex via an NO dependant pathway, and it has been shown that this increases the rate of cortisol release by the zona fasiculata, probably by increasing the delivery rate of ACTH to its receptors.
