No there are lots of different programs you can use. Basically windows media player is something that comes with Windows. On a mac you can use quicktime or even itunes to burn media files to a dvd
Even if the file I need to download is in Windows Media Player format? I can still use Quicktime?

Finish the updates and see what happens.

It's worse when people think "MAC" are the company and have never heard of Apple
This. When I see MAC, I think makeup. When I see mac, I think apple.

If you have the file, secondary/right click it and go to "get info". Check the file kind, if it's not MPEG 4, download Handbrake, use it to convert the files to MPEG-4, and that way it will be compatible with most video players/editors.
