Hey!
I'm also applying this year
Land Economy. Christ's or Clare. Don't have any idea which one I should choose

I also don't know yet which college I like best, but Christ's sounds great.
But I've heard that most of the Education students end up at Homerton anyway.

CHRIST'S
Well I just received an offer from Christ's this year, so I'm bound to say that :P
Isabell, my top two choices were Christ's and Clare too, but at the end of the day you should chose a college that you really like and think will suit your personality

In terms of how best to look at colleges, I think what I did might make sense. It's hard to spend a lot of time in Cambridge, so if you're only doing a day trip (which of course you really should before you consider applying), rather than doing college open days go preferably during term time, or during the summer when all the international students paying for a summer holiday at Cambridge turn up.

So that's what I'd recommend. Make a shortlist, spend a day walking round Cambridge, and then decide from there.

Ahhhhhhh, I´m from Germany, so this might be quite difficult. :argh:

Although I´ll be spending six weeks in England this year, I will be really difficult to get there, because we´re always staying at Poole, which is about three hours away from Cam. And my mum refuses to let me go on my own :frown:
And advice what I should do?

I will consider that
What will you study there?

I think Ill apply for Education, but Im not sure what I should choose as a second subject. Probably Music or History :-)

Not to shout 'fire' in a crowded theatre or anything, but does the Education Tripos still exist for 2012 entry? They were certainly discussing scrapping it, but I don't know what the end result was.
May apply for Medicine :/ But hopefully should make a better decision at open day
Applying for medicine (provided that my June modules go well).
I don't have a clue in pig's hell on which college to apply for! Waiting for the opening days to see how some are... One thing's for sure - Trinity's out of question since I haven't managed 97%+ in my January modules :P

I haven't done that much research into Trinity but where is this "97%+" coming from? Source? :s-smilie:
any newbies for maths?

I'm just regurgitating information that I have been told before. Apparently medics at Trinity have an average of something like 97% or more in their marks and have an average BMAT score of 7 (for section 2).

MATHS (is fun) but yeh, applying for maths.
College choice - still deciding between Clare/Sidney. Ive narrowed it down to those two =D.

Apparently it came from an email response, but their official webpage is this one: www.trin.cam.ac.uk/index.php?pageid=86&subid=23

They say that over 90% AS module marks and AA or BA in the BMAT is standard. 2 years ago, AA in the BMAT was 6.2, 6.2, which is not easy to achieve. Trinity are known to be grade whores for medicine and like high S2 scores, hence I would probably avoid it unless you have outstanding grades and feel confident in the BMAT.

Well a bit of persuasion to your mother probably lol some colleges will put you up overnight for low or even free for open days, but open days can be quite poor indicators hence my suggestion of shortlisting 6 or so and just lazing round. Also emailing admissions offices are good, some may even meet with you for a discussion.

Try not to do an open application and look closely at the colleges. If you can't visit, then at the very least spend a long time going through the resources like the alternative prospectus, and really narrow down what you want. New/old? Do you want to be very close to your department? Is it famed for sports if you're into that? Good music facilities etc. etc. etc. you will, if you're very picky, narrow it to only a couple that way.

However the thing is I didn't ever think I'd apply for King's, I was fairly certain it wouldn't be that one until I went. Really if you can persuade your Mum to go, really plan out the day because you don't really need more than a few hours and then you can go back to Poole, and just walk around the colleges and see where you want to spend the next 3+ years.

Oh my god
But wouldn´t there be any hint on the homepage of the faculty if they really scrapped it?
It would be HORRIBLE!

Do you think, colleges can also provide accomodation if you don´t visit on an open day but another day?

Is there any benefit other than choosing the right college for you by talking in person with a member of the faculty?

A member of the faculty will explain the course in a way that will enlighten infinitely more than staring at the faculty of the website, will help inspire your application, answer all pressing concerns - also it is a significant advantage, I feel, if you can be known and remembered by one of the people who will be interviewing you.

Speaking at length with my future DoS on the King's open day (once I'd decided King's was the way to go) about her specialist topic, which just so happened to be what my UCAS spent a little bit discussing, made her remember my name and my face, may have been an (albeit minor) advantage too. Did help too that my Mum spoke to her and ended up crying in joy just at the idea that I was applying to this place so I'm sure she remembered me after that
Either economics or maths, but most likely economics.

Just wondering whether there would be any point in applying for maths if I'm not doing further maths to A2 and whether I would be disadvantaged in any way.
I am planning to pick up AS further maths next year, and am slightly regretting not choosing it to begin with...

MML applicant for 2012 entry - French and ab initio Russian or German (haven't quite decided yet).

as for colleges, I'm probably going to be applying to Churchill. I have special circumstances (one of the MML entry requirements is French at HL for IB students, and I'm only taking French at SL). so after emailing nearly all of the colleges, Churchill is the only one willing to consider my application...

I'm so excited already

I'm hoping to apply this year too! It feels like I've been bugging everybody on the Cambridge forums for ages already (sorry, guys...)

If I end up applying (still not sure!), it'll be for MML, German and Spanish, possibly at Pembroke. I just need to see how my Spanish goes this year.

We had an admissions guy from Downing college in school to talk to us today, but there are only two of us applying from my school. I can't decide if that's a good or a bad thing.

Good luck everyone! :ciao:

I'll be a 2012 MML applicant as well! yay!

I'll be doing French and ab initio German or Russian (undecided)
