Re: Blocking internets sites on your computerAre you adding things using the restricted sites part of internet explorer? That doesn't block them, it just tells your browser to use the most secure internet settings when it connects to that site.(Original post by jkjkjk)
I have no idea how to block sites on your computer any help would be amazing?
I have tried to block them using internet options but this doesn't seem to work on firefox, annoyingly
Thanks
On XP go to C:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\ hosts
On Vista/7 go to C:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\
Open the hosts file using notepad.
At the bottom of this file, add the line
127.0.0.1 whateversiteyouwanttoblock.com
127.0.0.1 www.whateversiteyouwanttoblock.com
Repeat this for each website you want to block (you need one without www and one with www)
Go to file save as, then from the drop-down box below file name click All Files. Save the file as hosts. If it asks you to overwrite the file click yes.
This will cause the website to time out every time you try to load it. If you want to access the site again you need to remove the entry in your hosts file and then save it again.Last edited by Delaney; 15-03-2011 at 20:10. -

If you don't want to fool around with hosts and stuff, something like this might help too!

Re: Blocking internets sites on your computer
If you want to effectively block sites, then you will need to set the router for your network to use static DNS servers from opendns.org. Setup an account with them. Set your blocking options and DNS lookups will fail for any sites you don't want it to work for.

Re: Blocking internets sites on your computerPlenty of routers will let you set up a custom block list too, which is a bit easier.(Original post by ben broad)

Re: Blocking internets sites on your computerhowever you could just browse to the websites IP address and it'd work fine.(Original post by ben broad)

Re: Blocking internets sites on your computer
If you install Chrome, there's an extension, StayFocusd. You can customise the settings to allow yourself limited amounts of time on certain sites. Idk if a similar thing exists for Firefox.
