Re: Install XP on top of windows 7
If you have Windows 7 Ultimate, just use Windows XP mode.

I would just like to install a dual boot.
Can someone please answer my previous question. -
Re: Install XP on top of windows 7Yes, when you install Windows XP, it will give you the option of creating partitions on the drives you have and ask which one you want to install on. Just don't touch the drive with 7 on it.(Original post by whatajoker)
Thanks.
Can I create the partition on a different hard drive ( than where 7 is installed)?
Because I only have like 25 gig on that left, and I need atleast 20gig on the version of xp, and 5gig isn't enough to keep windows 7 running... -

Re: Install XP on top of windows 7
Hello, I was about to do this today but I thought, I have a hard drive which I can free up everything on it (40 GIG). But do I still need to make a partition on that hard drive? Can I just format/install windows xp on that that drive?
I will follow the end of this tutorial as well by writing the new MBR

Re: Install XP on top of windows 7
ERM...download Virtualbox? Its free developed by Java bought out by Oracle.
Like VMWare, similar to xpmode, but you can setup many different OS's.
http://www.virtualbox.org/
Plenty of youtube videos to help you get started. XP mode is useful for older apps incompatible with newer OS.
If you intend on using XP often and performance is a MUST then dual boot, although with the right settings in virtualbox you can get a solid xp OS.Last edited by kunjar; 28-03-2011 at 20:47. -

Re: Install XP on top of windows 7
If you have two separate hard drives, no you don't need to partition anything. Use one for XP and the other for 7. Also to remember is that you don't use quick format option that XP gives. If you want to partition a hard drive you need to use Partition magic as any otherway would make you delete all partitions and hence you'll lose the data.
