applying through clearing for courses that require a portfolio

do you still have to provide them with a portfolio, or does it work differently because it's so close to the start of the course?

can't speak for every course, but if they require a portfolio for on time applications to make an informed decision, they're likely to want one even more for those applying so close to the start of the programme - they want the best for the last few spaces.

Why would it be a problem if they did? Presumably if you are interested in this kind of course, you will have been so all along and will have been building a portfolio of some sort anyway. It may be that you are changing your area of specialisation, but even so I would anticipate (but don't know) that admissions tutors for such courses would still want to see what you can do, even in Clearing.

Many unis will invite Clearing applicants for a visit day, so if they do want a portfolio they will ask you to take it then.

it isn't a problem if they do. I just don't want to add loads more to it if they're not going to want to see it.

I'd suggest you should assume someone will want to see it at some point. This doesn't mean doing lots of extra work just for the portfolio, but rather making sure that anything you do work on would add value to it. There's a difference
