Re: Mathematics Applicants 2012Yeah like prove how to differentiate a^x.(Original post by ben-smith)
What do you mean? prove their derivatives?
Integrate by parts twice. If you're a pro you use complex numbers.
And ok thanks. Never seen it done with complex numbers, but parts sounds ok... -

Re: Mathematics Applicants 2012
Hi Guys, I am/was planning on (Don't know if I can make it now) going to Manchester to study Maths & Comp Sci. I had Averaged 90%+ in both A level maths and A level Further Maths prior to my Final Exams. However, on one day I had 3 maths exams and I completely blanked on everything I had studied for the past Week! (2 Further Maths Exams and 1 Maths!).
I Now think I've done horribly bad in them 3 exams to the point my Maths Grade would drop to the A-B level and my Further Maths Grader to a B-C level. Unfortunately, I can't do anything about this now and it has been haunting me for a while.
On another note however, I thought my other 2 A levels (Physics and Computing) went really well.
Anyone have any advice on what to do in this situation? -
Re: Mathematics Applicants 2012Do nothing (in particular, do not panic) and wait until your exam results come out. You'll then need to follow the general advice on this page.(Original post by Screwedup)

The harsh reality is that universities are unlikely to make concessions just because of a clash in exams, particularly since many Further maths students will have clashes too.
On a more positive note, you may find that those particular module scores dip below your potential but you've still reached your overall offer...
What is your offer? -
Re: Mathematics Applicants 2012
Thanks for the Link!
My offer is A in Mathematics then A in any and a B in any.
Even if I get into university, is there a point in doing those specific three exams again? Also, I don't mean that the 3 exams clashing gave me the trouble, it was my own fault for not having proper sleep for 2 days before the exams as I was constantly revising.
The disappointment, however, is that I will far below my predicted grades on my strongest subject. (I have not yet recieved my results and my Predictions were A* for Maths and an A * for Furthermaths)Last edited by Screwedup; 10-08-2012 at 14:50. -
Re: Mathematics Applicants 2012Hopefully you will be fine. I don't see the point in re-doing A-Levels (if you get into the university you want); I can't think of anywhere outside of a boutique investment bank / hedge fund that will scrutinize your A-Levels to that extent.(Original post by Screwedup)

My advice would be to relax until your results come out and if you're disappointed, be honest with yourself about how to cope with that many exams on one day. If you go on to do professional exams (accountancy / solicitors / actuarial etc.) you will frequently have to do many hours of exams on one day, covering far more material than in A-Level. However, you need not worry about that for now - concentrate on keeping yourself sane until results day -
Re: Mathematics Applicants 2012I'd say they're both very good unis, but I liked bath slightly more because I'm biased towards campus unis ;D I applied to both in the end though(Original post by mathsymathsy)
HEllO, For Maths, which uni is better? Bristol or Bath? thank you! How do I compare them? cheers!

I am mostly disappointed in myself for how i performed. Whilst I may get into Uni with my grades, I may revisit the A level's myself and perform how I should have regardless.
Other than that, thankyou for the advice. Goodluck with what you are doing! -
Re: Mathematics Applicants 2012
A-level people, once you get your results and have confirmed your place feel free to update your row on the Mathematics Stalking Page just so everyone can see where you're off too! Good luck guys =)

Re: Mathematics Applicants 2012I will do, because I feel that we mathematicians must stick together and reign triumphantly in the glory that we'll feel when we win non-mathematicians over. Haha!(Original post by laughylolly)

Have you been doing much maths over the summer, and do you have any favourite areas of the subject currently? -

Not too much. Was going to do more beginning next month in the lead up to starting university. Well after studying it at Advanced Higher I love Stats so I'll probably be taking that as one of the two optional modules at Durham. I've always liked Geometry because I guess it's more clearly visually aesthetic than other areas of maths. I kinda liked everything at school level so I guess I'm keeping an open mind for university level stuff. -

^--^ @laughylolly
I'll have to check out the Scottish Highers, because curiosity beckons me. I studied Maths and Further Maths at A-level, including three Statistics modules - haha. Graphs, functions and calculus have always really, really interested me. I also love complex numbers, matrices and the like, because - and probably similar to you reasons - they have geometrical, physical and algebraic beauty. I never like trigonometry too much, that is until I used it with De Moivre's Theorem and saw the link between hyperbolic functions, complex numbers and matrices, as I say.
Is the Advanced Higher like Further Maths at all? Yeah, Statistics is appealing to me because it helps me make sense of the world - and great to employ on a roulette table at the casino ;D
Like you, I'm keeping an open mind, but undergraduate calculus is incredibly appealing, as is group theory

Re: Mathematics Applicants 2012I think Advanced Higher Maths + Advanced Higher Applied Maths is the same as doing A-Level Maths and Further Maths. I think however the Statistics course at Advanced Higher covers slightly more things than at A level although a lot of stuff we don't go into too much depth with which is kinda annoying. You don't actually get to really apply any of the things you learn except in the two small investigations that you have to pass.(Original post by r85m916)

I'm quite interested in becoming an actuary after university so I'll probably go do some actuarial Mathematics in 2nd year onwards. Don't get too much choice of things in first year really but I guess its kinda nice because you get a flavour of everything and you have time to decide what areas you are really interested in. -
Re: Mathematics Applicants 2012I had that decision to make and I went with Bath because the university has a much greater emphasis on the sciences, bigger department, more modern, nicer town (although not as big), and Bath has higher entry requirements (Bath A*AA, Bristol AAA for double maths students) which makes me think it is better or at least harder to get into.(Original post by mathsymathsy)
