Wasn't the percentage question a trick question. Did it not ask for the percentage 'increase' in people who died????Surely that would just be 80% as the increase in people admitted to hospital was 80%. 10-20% was the amount that died but we had no previous percentage for rate of death. I would also presume it would the rate of death would be the same anyway. Or did I read the question wrong and it didn't say 'percentage increase'>????

The question on mortality rates was terribly worded.
If the prevalence increased by 80%, that doesn't increase the mortality rate as a percentage because they're proportional. The mortality rate will still be 10-20%. The only way a 'percentage increase' method would have been valid, is if they gave you figures to compare the percentage increase of those that died before versus those after.

That is what I thought as well. Hence my 80% answer. There were quite a few questions in the A level where edexcel didn't even understand what the were asking for themselves. I really want to get a copy of my exams back.

Well 80 percent increase means a multiplier of 1.8 so there will be a 27% mortality rate which is 12% more than 15% so your answer is correct.

I swear one of the questions (I think part c) was wrong, I asked the invigilator but she looked at it and told me there's nothing wrong with it and to read it again. And it was directly after it explained what exp 2 was doing.

At least the last section was actually relevant to the article. I think in past years teachers must have complained that the article was pretty much irrelevant to the questions or something. But still, two of the questions asked you to copy out sentences from the article! i think thats going from one extreme to the other. And annoying cos we'd revised stuff that was vaguely to do with the article like how you measure BMI and why waist:hip would be better. And all that jazz.

I would put the third one as tick as development counts as germination, flowering and chlorophyll production surely? I get what you mean, they arent hormones. The whole paper was like this :/

A 27% mortality rate is 80% more than 15%, you can't just add or subtract.

Tbh, in this question I wrote the examiners a little note to tell them it was impossible to work this out mathematically as it relied on the unstated assumption that the mortality rate was the same before the increase....

Edexcel made the Unit 1 cockup last year, and with the Maths thing recently (although apparently not their fault) is it possible they're going to strike this question out and give us lenience in marking but without making it public?

how did u find the rest of the pre-release? i thought it was very little knowledge based apart from the triglyceride q and quite different to all the other years..

Does anybody have the paper, I am really hoping for low grade boundaries, just pissed of about the lack of spec in this paper, and the awkward questions (like our whole bio class), really thought I knew most of the content needed as well, got good grades in mocks, but don't feel to confident from this paper, its ridiculous that we have our futures in the hands of such a stupid paper.
