While I'm no admirer of the Catholic Church, I think the Cardinal is 100% right.
Why should we give money to these countries without obtaining guarantees for better treatment of minorities?
And I thought Labour had a monopoly on cluelessness over foreign aid..... -

But I'm not sure the suggestion that we stop foreign aid to countries were religious minorities are persecuted is Christian-like in itself. Having said that, if the aid is going directly to people who are in need of basic necessities as opposed to funding state institutions then, from a humanitarian perspective (the same one the Cardinal is pleading to), I don't think it's a valid suggestion. There are similar arguments in regards to the situation in North Korea; there are plenty who would want all foreign aid going there to stop and I personally can't agree with that
