Yes, similar. I think we might be together for the introduction to audio module in 1st year? From what I can tell so far it's going to be some traditional art, lifedrawing etc, along with 3D, animation and digital 2D work.... And some theory XD I can't wait!

AHHHH that sounds so fun!! i cant wait either :biggrin:D ABERTAY FLEETO.

Hi, Im coming to Abertay for MPROF Game Devt as an artist. I've been offered a place in lyon st hall standard twin . Is it good? It costs about 228£ per month. Can I get cheaper accommodations (including gas, electricity, water and internet) ??
(edited 12 years ago)
And, are there windows? Coz I dont feel good without natural lights

Hey sorry for the delay Rebecca, afraid I can't help a great deal - not familiar with Lyon St however if you haven't seen it yet the Lyon Street brochure is here: http://abertay.ac.uk/media/Residence%20Info%20sheet%202011-12%20Lyon%20Street.pdf

You can see a pic of a twin room at the very bottom and since they say you get Window Blinds with your room I think you should get a window lol I'll try and get something a bit more concrete than that though. (I'd be very very surprised if you don't) Any other questions I'll see what I can do
Thank you Brizee. Im still confused bot now i think private is better. I wrote to some students personally and theyve replied. I will share it here so it will be useful to other students too.

Its is waste of money to stay their, I know one of my friends room but I am not sure I will conform with them and let you know. When are you coming to Dundee ( date). But i am sure that you will get accommodation very easily if you try. you can spend about £150 for your room rent including all bills, that is maximum. more than that is waste of money.

W.r.t accommodation, 227 GBP per month is slightly above average. You will find a cheaper place with some thorough searching. The problem is, when students come in September it gets really busy, so keep that your first priority after getting here.

Lyon street is okay, the problem is its like a party street., well, most student apartments are. There are students who party everyday and it can get noisy and everything. I do not know if you would like that. Also they had issues of fire alarms going off at 4 in the morning, when you would have to spend an hour on the street in the cold till everything is sorted out.

When you are looking for a place, do not go through letting agents. We had major problems with our last apartment, the letting agent (Grant Management) went bust, and we are still struggling to get our deposits back. So ideally, best way would be team up with other people from Abertay, maybe two or three of you (its hard to find one bedroom places, and you can share costs), and start searching gumtree and other websites for ads.

University accommodation is safe, as in, there are no issues w.r.t deposits, bills and council tax, the university does all that for you. In private you would have to struggle a little, but you would find a bigger and better place for the same amount. Its a matter of searching hard and a little bit of luck.

Hi,

Ah, that's the hardest choice you have to make! I'm typing this from Lyon Street and unfortunately haven't liked my stay thus far. The flats are very, very small with a lot of different restrictions on what you're allowed to do. Basically they are warm and in good condition, but very bare and will generally only cover your minimal needs for living. Internet is spotty and restricted to one computer with no wifi, beds are uncomfortable, full floor carpets, no air conditioning, all door are fire doors and must be kept closed at all times, etc. Also you are bound to have a lot of fire alarms because people keep partying and burning their food.

I'm sorry if that sounds like bad news, but honestly I would have gone private if I knew the exact details of this place. Also the location is less than ideal.

All that said, the place does work and the accommodation staff will do their best to help you with anything you need so it makes life a bit easier at times. At least I appreciated the extra bit of security when moving abroad:smile:

Hi,
I would suggest you to get the accommodation at lyon street as its a university accommodation so there will be less hassle. there are pros and cons for living in a private accommodation and university.

University.
- you will have to pay only the fixed amount monthly and not worry about anything else.
- university is accountable for maintenance and any problems that you have at the accommodation
- almost fully furnished accommodation

negatives
- as its a students accommodation the major inconvenience is that you will be troubled by heavy load of partying and noise from other students living in that building
- this year a lot of students didn't have internet connection set up in their accommodation at lyon street for the first 2-3 months, some students were shifted to another building due repair work but everything is taken care by the university (hope it doesn't repeat this year)
- fire alarms go off during mid nights on a regular basis. (its not a routine...its basically students playing pranks)
- rooms would be really small.

Private (if you really find a good landlord/home it would be far better than any university accommodation)
- you can find rents cheaper...(not necessary have to look out for good cheap flats)
- no problems as that of the university accommodation
- fully furnished homes
- landlord is accountable for maintainance

negatives
- some accommodations include bills in their rent but 90% of them exclude it, so on top of rent you will be incurring bill expense
- if your landlord is tough to get a hold of then u will face problems in getting broken stuff fixed in your home
- initially u will have to go to some formalities with the landlord like some ask for accommodation letters from international students, advance rent/deposit.
- sometimes getting your deposit money is hard and you have to be persistent with them.

(if your landlord or agent is good your stay would be amazing)
i would still recommend you for the student accommodation, as you would be able to concentrate on your work more while staying there.
If you plan to go for private homes. i remember a friend (Indian) of having a room to rent in his flat. I have no clue about the rent and stuff.
............................................................................................................................................................
Lyon street is 1 mile from the University. Its ok for a price of £227. But you dont know how yr accomodation facilities might be and you wont get a clear idea until you really see it. So, dont take any quick decisions. Come here first, have a look at the accomodation you want to live and then come to a decision.

Another thing is, if you dont find any accomodation to stay right as soon as you come here, it is better to contact any girls staying in dundee and ask them to stay for 1 week in their room. And later you can look for your suitable accomodation. I think University provides free accomodation for 1 week and you have to register prior for that. Just call to the Uni. and ask about those details.

I will try to find any Indian girls who can provide accomadation for you for 1 week if you want but not sure.

That is insane, sorry discussed this with a colleague we agree that £150 a week would be (above average but) feasible, £150 a month incl. bills is completely impossible nevermind the maximum you should be looking at.

Being honest there will be parties and the occasional fire alarm at night (not as much as is made out in that comment imho) there are ways to complain should the parties be too excessive and as far as I know there are no plans of building work on accommodation blocks though any major disruptions will be closely looked at.

What you should also understand is that the majority of 2nd through 4th years started looking for private accommodation for this year back in January, meaning a lot of the good, cheap places are long gone. Also as was earlier mentioned you are mostly going to find places don't include utilities (gas, electric and internet) in their rent. To give you an idea after bills my monthly rate is probably about £270-£280.

I am by no means saying don't go private, just giving you an alternate take.

I'm fine with Alloway! The people i've talked to that's going to that hall seem really nice! My friend is going into Victoria Chambers, although it's her second year. I read somewhere that first years between 17-19 get Opal 1 & Alloway, and first years between 20-25 get Victoria Chambers. That might not be entirely true though :P.
I'm going into first year Game Design with production management, SO excited!! wbu!?

I emailed them to find out and Opal and Alloway are for 16-19 and the others are 19+! Sucks cause I wanted to stay in Victoria Chambers! hahaha.

Hmm, okay. Yeah, Alloway seems alright (and I guess it is a lot cheaper!) I just really liked opal when I visited XD I guess we'll see when it comes to the 18th...

I'm going for Computer Arts c: I guess we'll probably be working together some time in the next four years! XD

I lived at Opal last year and have been to Alloway before. I'd say go with Opal - it's way better for making friends and socialising, and is also much nearer to Abertay. My friends from Alloway missed so many lectures because the treck from Alloway when hungover is impossible.

Also, after a night out you'll need a taxi to Alloway from any club in Dundee which could cost up to a tenner or so. Alloway rent might be cheaper, but travel adds up!

Yea it majorly sucks, Victoria Chambers is a 5 min walk from the Uni and is WAAAYYY cheaper than all of the other ones, minus Alloway :frown:

Woops, had only skimmed through the thread so didn't see you were hoping for a space. If they are fully booked it's worth a look at Courthouse. A few of my friends lived there and they're decent flats in the best location ever for a student.

Also I saw you're doing Computer Arts. Best course ever! First year is so easy too :awesome:

I wanted to go for VC too in my first year, but was basically forced in to Opal due to age. Was glad in the end though, because Opal was awesome (except for a few annoyances), whereas I saw VC was pretty crap from the parties I'd been to there.

Yes, I can't wait to get on the course! I'm guessing you're going into 2nd year of it? n__n Any tips you can give me? >__>
