although I love both, I agree that TVD is in a different league, yes the guys are all gorgeous but the acting is also far, far better! the Vampire Diaries has really stepped up since season 2 began - some really shocking revalations.

Depends whether you're talking Books or TV/Film. I read the Twilight books and loved them but hated the movies with a passion. Haven't read Vampire Diaries yet but love the show

Vampires do not sparkle. The Director ruined Twilight, and then the other director destroyed new moon, even though the book was crap too. not seen the 3rd, might give it a chance but if I don't like it i'll be back on here to moan its rubbish. True Blood is 18+ lots of sex, blood and violence

I prefer Vampire Diaries. The plot is so much more interesting and I personally think Stephen is must hotter than Edward!
Also, I personally detest Twilight! Bella and Edward doesn't even have a proper relationship! If you read it book, the majority conversations they have with each other is on the topic of:
-the history of the Cullen family
-how sexually desperate Bella is
-how Bella is in danger
-basically every thing relating to vampires

They're both awful excuses for books but the VD tv show redeems it somewhat here. The Twilight books+films are of the same quality: KILL IT WITH FIRE.

Better book series/characters? They're both based on a flimsy skeleton of a plot which is then padded out with characters which are thoroughly Mary/Gary Sue's. You can't go five pages of VD without a length exposition of Elena's "angelic" and "ethereal" beauty. Any personality given to both Elena and Bella is one-dimensional and flat, except -- in Elena's case -- also thoroughly unlikeable. Better plot, though? Did you miss all the anime rip-off Japanese spirit crap? And the "Wings of Darkness/Light/whatever" BS?

The Vampire Diaries tv show is superior in terms of writing and acting but that's only because they strayed so far from the books as to give it a chance at being halfway decent. Neither book series is about to win any prizes in content quality any time soon, anyway.
