Volunteering or internship?

Going to spend some time this summer on one of the two.

I could maybe fit both in and will probably do more work experience as the term starts anyway, but was thinking of volunteering abroad for a couple of weeks this summer.

I want to do it, feel I could contribute something and have some fun but from a practical point of view, I want to get into my first choice unis, would I be better served taking up an internship at an investment firm or bank (I want to do Economics, preferably at Cambridge, LSE or MIT)

I'm going overseas for DOE later on anyway. Do unis view overseas volunteering as a positive thing? Will it have a major impact on my application? If so, what kind of things should I volunteer for (conservation, sports coaching - don't really have any link to what I want to do at uni)

Do American unis perhaps view this more preferably than British ones?
