I was, as obvious by this thread, pretty confused and couldn't bring myself to choose one over the other. I began to think that it's the first time I'll be staying alone and perhaps the second largest city in UK after London wouldn't do much to make me feel safe+the crime kind of scares me Besides that, Bristol offers a year abroad program for CS, unlike Manchester (which provides IE, which I wouldn't opt for).

My results got published yesterday and I exceeded Manchester's offer and made it to Bristol. I finally decided that perhaps a smaller class and city will be more comfortable.

I'm still wondering if I'm right, but I guess I'm going to have to wait to find out!

Too bad, QS has UoM for 5th best in the UK for Computer Science
Although not everyone believes league tables

I know that both the universities are brilliant - hence the debate. I don't care about the varying tables that argue which should be few ranks above the other. However, I chose Bristol for above mentioned reasons + the course has, as per what I observed, more Mathematics (I could be wrong). Also, Bristol has 54 or so places as compared to Manchester's 200 or so. I'd like smaller lectures and classes.

I won't try to change your mind, since it's your decision to make. I just want to wish you good luck wherever you go!

Also, as for the rankings, I have to say that our job career is based not only on the university that we will graduate, but also on the progress we make on our own! In other words, If someone graduates from Oxford and someone from a less known university, It doesn't necessarily mean, that the one from Oxford will have a better future. Of course they would have more opportunities, but they must decide which path to follow on their own. Keep that in mind.

i firmed Bristol for Electrical Engineering and Electronics. Then i switched to Manchester because for my course, it has recently been rated 2nd in the UK. I was in tonnes of dilemma like you were, but Manchester just won me over!

    Manchester is for you !

If you're worried about Manchester not being as highly ranked as Bristol, then don't. Manchester just don't bother worrying about doing the things that push a uni up in the UK rankings. Manchester tends to do pretty well in international rankings. The manc Wikipedia article explains it quite well

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Univers...and_reputation
And yet Bristol also does better than Manchester in the QS rankings without (allegedly) deliberately compromising in areas like "teaching and the student experience."

Did you look at the International Tables?

Manchester is way above Bristol in all of them.

You'll probably end up more confused at the end of all this.

Hey, sorry to revive this topic after a year, because now I am stuck in this situation.

I have offers from bristol and manchester.

Bristol said that I stand a good chance at a scholarship.
    Manchester isn't offering me one.

Bristol is "better" in the league tables, Manchester isn't.
But of course , as from the previous comments, I have learnt that league tables are crappy.

Bristol is a quieter than Manchester.
Manchester has old Trafford (man utd fan)

    Brain and friends say Bristol.
    Heart and parents say Manchester.

    The guardian says Bristol.
USNEWS says Manchester is better in world rankings.

    Help me . Please. . :fight::fight:
I have another friend in the same situation as me .

Is the amount of this scholarship enough to make a noticeable difference to your / the person who is funding you through uni?

League tables really are a load of tosh. Both Bristol and Manchester are in the same 'tier' of unis in terms of prestige, although Bristol probably has the edge over Manchester.

Bristol is a quieter than Manchester.
I lived in Bristol for 19 years, and I've lived in Manchester for almost a year. Honestly, Bristol isn't substantially quieter than Manchester. It's a smaller city, but in all honesty I don't really notice the difference in size between the two cities - once a city gets beyond a certain size, you only really visit certain parts of it, and the other parts become irrelevant. Bristol is the regional capital, with lots of culture and nightlife on. Quiet, it is not - but neither's Manchester!

Manchester has old Trafford (man utd fan)
    And Bristol has Bristol City
Don't forget that Man Utd do play all over the country, and if you really want to see them play at home, then it's only a 3 hours train journey from Bristol to Manchester on the train (~£40 return with a railcard) and then another half hour on the bus to Old Trafford. You could get there without too much difficulty.

    Brain and friends say Bristol.
    Heart and parents say Manchester.
This really is something that you've got to decide for yourself. Honestly though, I think you'll be happy wherever you go.

Out of interest, are you planning to work in the UK, India or elsewhere after graduation? If you're planning on working outside the UK, then it may be worth thinking about which one is best known internationally.

My responses are in blue, although I appreciate that all I've actually managed is confuse you further! I'm happy to answer any further questions you have on Bristol as a city, and Manchester uni / city, as I've lived in both (I grew up less than a mile away from Bristol uni )

Youre like the Wikipedia for Bristol and Manchester.

You have definitely helped me a lot !!!!!!

    -----MANCHESTER it is -----

Well, even though the scholarship is pretty impressive, I don't want to compromise on the fun of the supposed best part of my life.. So I'm ready to overlook the scholarship and choose Manchester.

Thanks again for clearing my doubts.

Bristol is *slightly* more prestigious than Manchester in domestic terms. However, from what I've heard Manchester is better known internationally.

In short, I doubt it will matter too much which one you pick - they are both excellent universities, and both are very well regarded in the UK.

Do you have any idea which university will get me in better schools in the future(Phd). Manchester is giving me a hard time with this conditional offer. The admission office is sooo unorganized, I had to talk to several people to know about my status. I don't know if the university worth retaking the IELTS.
Manchester in known internationally because of The Times Table (I guess). also many of my professors who taught me at home graduated from UOM. I think I will do my Phd in UK or US so I need to do my master in a university that have better reputation in these two countries. beside I think bristol is more selective.

I'm soo lost really .. it's really tuff call

Honestly, it won't make that much difference which one you pick, so don't stress that much! Both of them are good enough to get you into Oxford / Cambridge for a PhD

I have conditional offers from both Manchester and Bristol for Computer Science. The league tables are what confuse me - Bristol is supposed to be, tbh, quite amazing. Convince me why I should choose Manchester, besides the fact that I, quite obviously, am in love with the University of Manchester. It is kind of a mind versus heart affair - I want to choose Manchester with my head as well, just to be at peace and not regret it in the future.

ps: I guess this would be a great way for other people in my position (Manc vs XX university, for yy subject) to convince themselves as well!
Well given that you are an international, I don't see why you looked at local rankings cuz in http://www.topuniversities.com/unive...mputer-science , and http://www.timeshighereducation.co.u...ng-and-it.html clearly ranks manchester higher than Bristol worldwide..

I have friends from computer science and they are all having a great time here, I haven't seen them complaining, unlike some modern language students

If you want to come here you shouldn't let some league tables influence you, as their outcome depends on some bull**** surveys, and they usually vary a lot when you change methodology ..

I need help on this also. I am an international student with unconditional offers from bristol uni to study high performance computing and manchester uni to study advanced computer science with IT management. This will be my 1st time in the UK so i don't know which course or city will suit me most.

My friend is convincing me to come to bristol as he got an offer there also but i like manchester as a city maybe because of my love for manchester united.

What i need to know is which of the above courses will offer me a great career?
Which city will i enjoy the most?
What is the possibility of getting opportunities in both course in the UK?

I will be applying for my VISA in 10days so i need to know which of the CAS to use.

    I'm confused.
