Re: TSR Climbers Thread
wow, a climbers' thread!
Does anyone here do any competition climbing? I used to compete in the USA, and was on the national team before I moved to England.
I haven't been training as much the past few months, but before that my onsight was around 7b+/7c indoors, and 7b outdoors...bouldering around V6/V7 because I have zero power whatsoever.
Can't wait to finish exams and get back to training! -
Re: TSR Climbers ThreadHey welcome to the thread... ooooh a pro on here you'll have to give us some training tips. How long you been climbing for? Have you been climbing outdoors since you've been in the UK? If so where? Power now that would be nice! Slow and steady for me. Your a few grades higher than I am which are VERY respectable please teach me(Original post by nieveneu)

When do your exams finish, where in the country are you?
EDIT: To answer your question, i've never done any competition climbing but hoping I may get a chance to have a go when at uni. -
Re: TSR Climbers ThreadPro? no way, far from it! I've been climbing for 6 years now, minus the past few months. I haven't really done much outdoor climbing in the UK, most of the outdoor stuff I've done since moving has been in France (Chamonix, Fontainebleau) or Hong Kong, which is where I am now. Hopefully this summer I'll get a chance to try some of the outdoor climbing in the UK.(Original post by dipless)

Nice, what sort of outdoor you normally do Boulder, sport or trad? I'm guessing not trad there aren't that many outside UK that do mainly Trad! Anyway have fun in Hong Kong very jealous.

Re: TSR Climbers Thread
How difficult is it to start Trad climbing if you have only ever done indoor/ outdoor sport climbing in the past?
I got up to climbing a 6b (i think) sport grade at one stage last year but I have done next to no trad climbing and I really want to get into it. Have started bouldering a lot more now recently to hopefully get my strength and technique back to the level it used to be at -
Re: TSR Climbers Thread
I was thinking of doing a climbing course at my uni, it's a bargain compared to the places at home, 6 weeks of 1.5 hour sessions for £40 and it would be finished just in time for the summer hols. What's putting me off is that climbing isn't something I can do on my own and I worry that after the course is over I won't have anyone to climb with and won't be able to continue. Obviously I'll be at home for the summer and there are some climbing walls nearby (I live in Surrey/Berkshire area) so I might be able to go along there and find people? Then in September I can join the uni climbing society. Not having anyone to do outdoorsy stuff with is the story of my life, I never seem to meet anyone who likes the same stuff as me and I'm in despair about a whole summer of doing nothing :-(
I'm worried that I'll be really rubbish and not able to climb up anything! I did some climbing (indoors and outdoors) when I was younger but now I'm 23 and less flexible ;-) Probably a bit stronger though! -

Trad is a lot more serious and something that should not be rushed... don't run before you can walk! Your best option to get into trad is to join a local climbing club or joina group of people who are experienced trad climbers that way they can guide you through the process of placing pro, setting up ancors and the ropework.
The other part is eventually getting your own rack can really get expensive. But I would advise trying it I find Trad routes have a lot more character and really push you mental capacity on the rock!
Let me know how it goes!
Hey you should totally do it! I am not the most flexible climber in the world, but I make up for it with willing(Original post by LooCee)

Thats a really good price as well and would put you in a good position to really get motoring. Don't stress about finding like minded people. I have regular partners and randoms and you can almost always find people to find here Climbfind is reall use ful for meeting like minded individuals you should check it out! Definately join the uni mountineeering society will be loads of climbers there of all levels who i'm sure will be happy to impart their wisdom
Don't stress about being rubbish it doesn't take long to get to at least a passable standard

I've been having a look around and there are a few clubs in my local area and some of the climbing walls run social evenings to climb and meet other people. Also like you've said, a lot of climbing websites seem to have forums devoted to finding partners and meeting up so hopefully it shouldn't be too much of an issue! My uni has a climbing society and a fell/mountaineering society so I can join both next year
That will help make my weekends more interesting, weekends at uni are so boring!

Re: TSR Climbers ThreadThats a good shout! You'll love it and as I said join CLimbfind it really is a useful site.(Original post by LooCee)

Re: TSR Climbers ThreadFind a climbing wall in you're area, or alternatively find an outdoor centre that does climbing courses. You won't regret it(Original post by Rich_183)
Hi, id love to get into climbing, am 20 yrs old and am pretty slim but don't have a clue where to start? Any advice? Cheers

Re: TSR Climbers ThreadI was able to top rope a 6b outdoors and lead a 5c. All of my outdoor climbing has been in the south of france so its mainly been limestone crags. Unfortunately wont be able to get back there this year which is why I'm looking to take up Trad. Much more UK places to climb outdoors then!(Original post by dipless)

My local climbing wall just involves bouldering at the moment and I'm still not sure whereabouts the nearest 'proper' climbing club would be but I'm definately going to try and have a look. Though hopefully when I get to Uni in October their climbing/mountaineering club will be good
The mental aspects of climbing are definately the hardest for me to get to grips with. I still get so scared sometimes and with trad it would be even worse because you're relying on your own protection. But I guess you just get better with time and experience

Re: TSR Climbers ThreadYou should definately go for it with regards to trad, sometimes, I actually feel safer with a good bit of pro I've put in myself compared to a bolt on a sea cliff.(Original post by mlalex)

Climbing gear these days is so advanced that on most climbs you can get a good bit of pro in every few metres or even less. It depends on the rocktype though. The climbing I did last month in Cader idris was only a Diff grade (thats only about 3+ sport) but the pro was terrible as you can see in my pic earlier up the thread; and that was a belay! The bits you could get in where sketchy at best and at one point I was run out over 20 metres! If it had been at my trad limit (~HVS) I would have been in trouble with pro that bad
So choose a good rocktype and climb well below you're sport grade to start with. You'll really enjoy it.
