Southampton is very leafy, and near the sea of course which is a plus  You say you aren't looking for the nightlife, so an enormous city like Leeds probably wouldn't be best for you. I'd rule Sheffield and Glasgow out for the same reason. I'm picking at straws though, as they're all good universities.

Lol yea I know theyre all good unis thats why am confused and kinda need real ppl advise (ppl who've been around, seen things and know reputation and good advice, not some league table contradictions)!!

Mmmm well for Southampton, the only thing keeping from going "yea then am going for that for sure" (especially after the excellent league table rankings), is the fact that its degree isn't EXACTLY what I want: Public Health Nutrition.. Am kinda more inclined towards Human Nutrition and Clinical Nutrition (thats jargon from my domain I know, but that IS the reason to a big extent...)..

But thnx sweetie for the great piece of advice :^_^:!! I mean, other than Southampton, do u think therez not much to be enjoyed in other places without the nightlife? Like would I feel left-out and kinda bored in the big cities (especially that its now for me: leeds or sheffield mostly...)!! I do LOVEE shopping and the big city feel, cafes and hanging around... What do u think ?

lol ...at this level you shold always specialise in one and more importantly knowing that you have planned for Phd in nutrition i would suggest to specialize in it first.

its not a very bad option to make both the degrees strong but if it was Leeds or Sheffield it would have been a better option.

Most of the Indian students go to Leeds (if you ever lived in India) i'v heard
maY be because of exquisite lifestyle. but if Sheffield is better ranked for the degree u want then opt for Sheffield.

Am actually not finding any ranking table where my major (Nutrition) is ranked! I mean, sometimes its ranked in "Subjects Allied to Medicine".. And in that, leeds wins.. But Sheffield has an overall higher world ranking, and ppl talk abt it more like one of the "top" unis... What to go for, mmm...

Leeds is "currently working through a strategic plan which by 2015 aims to see the University of Leeds rank inside the world's top 50 universities."... Lol... Thats what it says on Wiki, and none of that for sheffield's future.. But then sheffield is already ranked higher so ughhhhh... Damn I cant make up my mind :frown:!!

Btw am not from India, am from Lebanon  (thats in the middle east, mediterranian area).. Lol just thought I'd tell u And I've been dreaming of going to UK my whole life so really wana make it count (academically and experience-wise)!!

Woow you've been AMAZINGLY helpful!! Thanks A MILLION i really appreciate that!!! So tell me abt u, where do u go, whats ur major, etc :h:??

I've never actually visited Sheffield University, or Glasgow at all, but I imagine there's lots to do in both places even without the nightlife. My brother was in Glasgow last year and spoke highly of the city. I'm wondering though about how you'd cope with the climate up there, since you're from Lebanon? Southampton is on the south coast so is sunnier, drier and warmer than Scotland and Northern England, as a rule. As for Leeds, I turned down my offer from there after visiting because it just felt like they'd taken a chunk of the city and called it a campus, if that makes sense. I wasn't keen on the thought of being in a big city at all times. That was in 2003 however and I've matured since then...I still prefer smaller towns but when I visited Leeds a few years later I found it much better than I remembered.

I'd say Sheffield. It's got a little bit of everything: prestige, good city, quite 'green', campus is fairly compact.

Mmm in regards to the city and life, I live in a big city here (the capital of Lebanon, Beirut) and its quite a noisy and exciting place with things happening all the time, and I get bored when I go to the towns here.. However dunno if the big-city vs. town experience here in Lebanon is the same as the English one.. Perhaps the English town is still more exciting.. No way for me to really know for myself unfortunately..

Yea well for now am kinda stuck between sheffield and leeds.. Coz I've eliminated Southampton (due to the course not being exactly what I want), also Glasgow (due to the above reasons, as well as the course..).. Although I loved the course at Reading (being both Nutrition and Food Science) but also eliminated it since the others are better ranked (dunno if am doing the right thing)...

So am left wd Leeds and Sheffield to pick from now, and stuck there :s-smilie:..

So u think leeds campus isnt soo "campus-style" right? Like not-so-green and nice to be in? What abt general uni reputation, think therez a big difference between leeds and sheffield?

Thanks sweetie for the great advise!! Where did u end up going for uni btw ?

Now to me am actually stuck between leeds and sheffield.. One day I go "leeds it is!" the next I go "no its definitely sheffield!"... So exactly between those two, what do u think?

Yea I felt this combination was there in Sheffield.. Definitely on my mind now! But they say the campus is scattered and not-so-campus-style.. You think so? What abt leeds vs sheffield as cities (if u have the info)? Btw did u study in sheffield ?

Aha ur from Pakistan nice knowing u  Yea I do realize my name is originally Indian, i've been told that before! Thnxxx yea i do like my name too, and i figure i will be mistaken for Indian in UK as i am brunette and do have those oriental dark eyes too :blushing:

So ur applying to Bristol and LSE next yr! I'd recommend you do so asap like december or so, to increase ur chances of being accepted (I head the earlier u apply the better the chances!!)

Mmmm am either going to leeds or sheffield so chances of accidentally bumping into you would be rather slim  But definitely will intend to keep in touch, maybe will meet in London when I visit later on..

Btw do u know any1 in UK or will be going alone? Am gona be totally on my own so am excited yet nervous abt this.. Very new experience for me!!

I don't know about the others, but I live in Reading and would not recommend it!! The nightlife isn't great, the campus is quite pretty and getting better, but the town itself really doesn't have much going on and if you want to go party in London, its still an hour journey at the least! Sorry for the negative opinion, just thought I should let you knoww

I see Glasgow was eliminated since I last posted :frown:

If you like the big city life, Leeds is probably your best choice since both the city and uni are larger than Sheffield. However, Sheffield's overall reputation is slightly better (at least in my opinion) if that is more important to you.

My field of study limited my options for universities (and even completely ruled out some of the countries I was interested in) so my choice wasn't as difficult as yours.

I don't know anyone in the UK either so I know how you feel.

The campus isn't that scattered to be honest. Maybe a few buildings are a bit further out but it's not far once you get used to it. Sorry, I don't know about Leeds but yeh, I study at Sheffield

I did my undergrad at Leeds and I've visited the others except Glasgow. Leeds wins hands down, I know I'm biased but it really is the best.

I got accepted to Reading aswell and went for an open day and it was horrible! The campus is in the middle of nowhere with no nightlife or decent shopping districts. Sheffiled is a good uni granted, but the city and the university are smaller than Leeds.

I don't know who said the Leeds uni is spread out over the city? Because it's not at all, it's all in one place, a village campus, right next to the city centre. I would recommend anyone to go there, it's full of friendly people and lots to do.

Hi again Shery! Mmmm well for requirements, in case of excellent grades they would definitely accept right away (except in rare very competitive cases).. In case of competitive cases/medium good grades where therez two applicants with similar profiles, they would prefer the person with experience.. Its a matter of getting better grades and trying to get at least some internships no your CV by time you apply..

I dont have facebook btw, i guess we can stay in touch via TSR here  Wish you best of luck in your exams  Tc 4 now!!

Hey there thx a lot!! On the controversy I love the objectivity!! U know perhaps its better to know the negatives of each place than the positives, coz it helps more, I mean therez positives everywhere, but elimination is the best way to go about choices in life  Thnx a lot!!

Anyway, I guess am kinda narrowed down to Leeds or Sheffield for the time being.. Got any recommendations in that regard?

Btw why dnt u consider going off to another city, perhaps for postgrad or smth, u know, to try a new place

Heyyy thereee!! Welcome back, nice to hear from u again !!

Yea glasgow had to go since therez some points i didnt like abt the program itself.. Wow but wats ur major that u didnt find anywhere else?? Am so interested now in that!!

Yea regarding wat ur saying thats exactly my dilemma, the thing is, now i dunno what i want, imagine!! The big city and a relatively less reputable uni (but quite reputable in my domain), or a less exciting city yet the better uni in overall ranking!! I mean, I can only know if i actually go there and see, which is near impossible in my case :frown:

I just wonder how much LESS of a busy and exciting city sheffield is than leeds, and am a fan of shopping and that stuff :h:)... And how much BETTER of a uni in terms of reputation and ranking is sheffield than is leeds?

Good thing in ur case u got both it seems, the city, the course u need and excellent uni, great combination u have there! Guess its gona be two of us living the new experience and trying to fit in and enjoy:smile: Btw r u goin for uni accommodation or a private place?

I study History and sorry, don't know anyone who does Human Nutrition. The city is pretty good/lively. The shopping's relatively good-- you've got loads of shops near the city centre (e.g. a small topshop, h&m, new look, etc) and also in meadowhall (which is a tram journey). If you live in the ranmoor/endcliffe villages the shops are probs a 40 mins walk but 20 min bus journey.
