Most people on this thread are going on to do psychology. I can see a healthy dose of realism can be useful when making the decision and it was important for you to point out as you did that people can always switch degrees if they feel psychology was the wrong choice.

However I think your absolute determination that psychology is one of the most difficult degrees to get a job with is wide of the mark. I think this after looking more closely at the actual employment rates and routes of graduates. So no anecdotes from me this time! :smile:

I'm wondering this too, sent my questionnaire on Monday but didn't receive the confirmation email till Tuesday...garghh UCL is the only uni I'm still waiting to hear back from, it's driving me crazy!

Applied and got offers from Bangor, Sheffield, Leeds, Hull and Birmingham.
Ruled out Birmingham, but for the rest i'm really stuck, Sheffields way high in the leagues in comparison to Leeds and for what Leeds want grades wise for where it is it seems silly to go for there, but i really like it :frown:

Hi! I've received conditional offers for the Bsc at York, Bristol, Bath and Durham and for the MA at Edinburgh, and I don't know which one to choose. I'm Norwegian so I don't have the opportunity to visit any of the unis, so I'll appreciate any advice you guys have :smile:

Firstly, well done on your offers, those are all great universities. Secondly - Bath has a placement year I believe, and is the only one out of those that you have listed that does so. So yeah, thats a good or a bad thing depending on your perspective. Regardless, I'd personally choose Bristol/York; both are around the top 5 in the country for Psychology and roughly the same in terms of general reputation.

The course in Psychology is considered one of the best in the country. It is particularly noted for the very high rate of employment among its graduates and the inclusion of a placement year in the course. Bath is a specialist university and does not offer all degrees. It concentrates on Psychology and Social Science degrees. edit: seems it concentrates on engineering etc (see post below)

Bristol = Bigger city, no campus so the university buildings are in the centre of the city itself. Great night life, very well liked by students.

The course in Psychology is well regarded. It concentrates on training students in Psychology with a biological emphasis and an intention to teach them 'experimental' (as in scientific) Psychology.

Durham = think Harry Potter movie! Considered an excellent university but its psychology department is not as well considered as Bath or Bristol.

York, Edinburgh
I don't know these universities or cities very well.

For me the choice would be between Bath and Bristol but others may know more about the York and Edinburgh courses.

So definitely worth considering, as the person above said Bath is specialised although it is actually mostly natural sciences and engineers, then some social sciences, it's the more arts/humanities courses they tend not to offer...not sure if this is particularly relevant but thought I would clarify. I'm guessing the Edinburgh course will also be 4 years? Most scottish courses are although some let you start in year 2 in which case ignore this bit, but if choosing between two 4 year courses I think you are much better selecting the one with the placement year over the one that is simply a year longer. But then for I'm a bit biased as I'm at Bath myself...

Bristol, York and Durham also all have good reputations so it very much depends on what you personally are interested in. It's worth going on each of the websites and having a quick look at the staffs interests and the different modules on offer if you can find them and see how well these match your personal interests.

Different people suit different unis so it really is a matter of what sort of areas of psych you're interested in and what kind of place you would like to live, but definitely consider the placement year so far everyone who did psychology I've met during work exp have told me they really wish they had looked into unis with a placement, and feel free to ask any q's about Bath. But like I said I am pretty biased.....

Thanks for clarifying re: Bath. I really thought they did lots of Sociology too. Anyway, the reason I mentioned it to the OP is that I think a university that specialises in a narrower range of subjects may be better for those subjects than another, more general,university.

They do do sociology and social policy too but something like 2/5 of all Bath undergrads are doing some form of engineering then there a lot of natural sciences and maths that kind of thing, so people doing the more written subjects are definitely in the minority. One nice thing (well this is subjective but I like it) about it not offering all the subjects like most unis do is it is a lot smaller then most which I think makes it feel a bit friendlier and you recognise a much greater proportion of people then you would be likely too at a bigger uni. I guess could say they specialise in natural, mathematical and social science, very few of the degrees they offer don't fit into one of those 3 categories :smile:

@Jackso, Catsowyn and Flippin-mad: thanks alot. I didn't know Bath had a placement year, but that sounds really great! The bachelor will be over 4 years then, right? Right now, my choise is between Bristol, Bath and Durham. I'd like to live in a bit bigger city than Durham, but I think the collegiat system there sounds nice and one of my best friends is also going to go there, which isn't really that important but would have been fun going to uni together. I think I have to read more about the unis and the courses online, but you've been very helpful so thanks alot :smile:

Yeah at Bath it's over 4 years with placement in 3rd year.

Bristol is a bigger city than Bath, but then it's only 15mins away on the train so easy enough to go for a day/night out at one if you're at the other.

Cool! I got my first offer in December (from York I think) and received the last one just a week ago. I think I got my answer from Edinburgh in the middle of January, but I didn't get an offer for the Bsc, so they changed my application to the MA instead and I was offered a place there. I'm from Sunndal (small town in the middle of Norway) :smile:
