I think I applied to the one in Cambridge too - I haven't heard anything back either. What subject are you thinking of doing?
Oxford is my first choice though, but the uniq summer school really doesn't seem like something for me - for precisely the reasons to do with the entrance criteria. It's going to be so good, I can tell! Have you ordered a hoodie or polo?
Also, which house are you staying in? I wish they had a school like Eton for girls - though, on saying that, not sure how I'd handle an all girl school. Perhaps I'll stick to my mixed state-comp for the time being!

Oh that's good, that probably means they haven't sent out replies yet... Good luck anyway! I'm thinking of doing physics, but in Cambridge you do natural sciences, and so I'd just sort of choose all physics-y modules if I got in... In the summer school, they had a physics option, so I went for that. What about you? What are you thinking of doing?
I still like the idea of Oxford, I just prefer the course at Cambridge (also I've visited there twice and I really liked it). But I understand what you mean about the criteria.
Definitely! I ordered a grey hoodie, wbu?
Common Lane House, you? It would be amazing... There's nothing like it at all in Northern Ireland (public schools don't really exist here). But then again, my school's all girls, which is okay if you're a "day girl" like me, but all the boarders (there are like 30 in total, mostly international) absolutely hate it! I think now if I could choose again, I'd definitely choose mixed

Oh that's cool, I'm completely different then, thinking of doing history. I don't do any science AS levels, and if I'm honest, I actually miss Chemistry a little bit! Yep, I ordered a grey hoodie too, good choice- AND I'm in Common Lane House too! I swear the majority of people on here are, which is really nice
That's so cool that you're from Ireland, I'm from down the South East of England. I go to mixed, not sure I'd be able to cope with all girls to be frank, hahaa

I'm just really excited to go in July, it should be a really good experience.
Oh, and I'm thinking Oxford over Cambridge only because I've been up there quite a few times now, found a college I really like, had a look round on the Open Days etc., and I just really love the city too; it makes sense

Lol then it's good you're going to Eton cause there's plenty of history there! XD I'm vice versa, I don't do any humanities for AS, but I do miss them... Its annoying having to only choose a handful of subjects isn't it? Yeah I know, it's weird isn't it? But it looks really nice
Haha thanks  Oh so you're not too far away from Windsor? (windsor is in south east isn't it? Nearish to London? Geography is not my strong suit ) Lol I don't think I'd recommend it!
Yeah exactly  That sounds like you've got really good reasons  lol I wanted to go to oxford for most of year 12, cause my older sister was in upper sixth applying to Cambridge and I wanted to be different. Then she got in, and this year, I visited her there and really liked it, so I decided to apply there instead!

Oh sorry just in case I confused you - year 12 in Northern Ireland is the same as Year 11 in England (i.e fifth year). It's cause we don't have a reception year, so we call that P1, and so our years are then one higher (in name only) than english years

That sounds awesome!! I'll be doing English and will be sure to tell him  A couple of questions, if that's okay?
How many essays do you have to write in the time? And how long do you get to do them? Also, do you know if it's okay to bring laptops? (I can't help feeling it would make it easier to do work).
Also, did you get given a reading list beforehand? If so, when?

Sorry, that was more than a couple

No problem  At first the essay writing is a bit daunting, but you get used to it and will definitely end up improving. We did 4 essays in total which includes an ELAT paper done in timed, controlled conditions- nothing to worry about as everyone's in the same boat! We were given two days to do the set essays- due to the packed days you work in the evenings. As for laptops: I know of a few people who brought them however there are PCs in the library which is a lovely place to work (socialise :P). It can be a bit distracting so working in your room may be more productive. I only typed one essay and hand wrote the others- a word of caution, bring a memory stick because the PCs don't save work as I discovered!!
They give you a reading list in plenty of time (I can't remember exactly when) so don't worry.
Have fun

Exactly! It should be really great, even if all the essays sound a little daunting. Yeah, I really wish I could have done a couple more- though I don't know how I'd be able to cope with the workload! I did consider the IB for a bit, but my school doesn't run that, and I decided to stay at my sixth form because of all the extra curricular stuff they run, rather than move to a new sixth form college.

Ooh, not too bad- I'm just over an hour from London- closer to Chichester, or Portsmouth if you've heard of them? Whereabouts in Ireland are you from?
Wow, so your sister's at Cambridge? What is she studying  that must be really useful to be able to go up and stay with her and get a feel for the environment, and if you like it there.

I'm quite excited about the whole university application process, I tend to forget we've got to get through our AS levels first!

Out of curiosity, has anyone here applied to any other summer schools? Like Oxford uniq or one of the Sutton trust ones?

Yep. I applied to both UNIQ and the sutton trust summer school at Cambridge - I've not heard back from them either, apparently UNIQ letters come out around the 25th? I think that's what I read at least :L

Yeah, I don't have much hope for UNIQ to be honest, as my current sixth form's got a pretty good record of getting people into Oxbridge. The school I took my GCSEs at wasn't great, but I don't know which one is more important when they're considering applications :/

Thank you  I'm glad to hear about the ELAT - daunting as it sounds I imagine it will be hugely helpful practice. I might bring my laptop then

Yeah the IB seems great, but I don't know of anywhere that offers it where I live :frown: But it's probably a wise choice to keep up the extra-curriculars and everything for the personal statement

Oh right, yeah I have heard of them. So you're quite close to the coast? I'm from Belfast, so Northern Ireland  She's doing linguistics (science of language) at Pembroke. Yeah it's really nice, and also cause I'd never been anywhere in England except London and York before

Haha that means I'm not the only one! I'm looking forward to just sort of getting things going and knowing I'll be off to uni soon

Oh cool  I applied to the Cambridge sutton trust one, but not UNIQ. Which subject did you apply for? I applied for physics

Oh yeah I think Sutton Trust had pretty similar requests... I know what you mean, cause my school generally gets a few people into oxbridge every year, so I don't know how high a chance I have :/But hey I might as well have tried  I don't know, I think having the first school will definitely help a bit  Though it's a shame that the criteria is mostly not academic, I mean I do appreciate why it is that way, but still.

I applied for Chemistry for both

Yeah, I wasn't entirely sure about UNIQ or Sutton Trust, it just felt that even though I met some of the criteria, the fact my sixth form has a good record at Oxbridge was going to hold me back a bit. Main reason I'm so glad I got into Eton! It seemed like the one I'd have the best chance at because it didn't take what school you went to or anything into account.

Yeah, I wasn't sure whether to apply to sutton trust or anything, but the sixth form team said that I may as well! So we'll just have to see how that goes but I'm not that hopeful to be honest.

Oh and I forgot to add, I got a grey hoodie too!

I'm glad! Grey was obviously the best colour  which house are you staying in?

One of the Year 13s at school got a grey one, it does look really good! And Common Lane (: It really does seem like we're all in common lane! :L

Good choice - chemistry's awesome XD

Yeah I felt Eton was probably was the one I'd have the best chance for too, but I was still shocked to get in  I wonder how many people apply :/

Well it's always best to give these things a shot  I also went for it because tbh the form didn't take too long to fill out and it's free so...

Grey's clearly the best, isn't it?

Assuming you're both in Common Lane. Yeah, I know what you mean, although another girl from my school - who got in to do double maths- is staying in the other house I think.

Do you guys know roughly how many people there are for each subject?
I applied to the sutton trust one at cambridge. Havent heard anything though.

I think im so excited to go just to see eton. It looks so nice there, its a shame its an all boys school. I definately want to get a hoodie now. Did you get your initials put on your hoodies?

Yeah, I've not heard anything back from sutton trust cambridge, I'm currently trying to look around to find a date... whilst I should be doing work for tomorrow...

Yup, I got my initials put on it! I have no idea why :L
Oh, I looked up the date for when we hear about sutton trust, and its a while away (forgotten it now).

Do you think eton will contact us again? Because I hope they do so that I know that my acceptance form got to them.
Reply 518
Oh that's good

yeah i'd hope that they reply to us again, but they did give us pretty much all of the information they could have with the acceptance letter so I don't know if they will :/
Reply 519
Surely they'll send us a notification letter telling us they've received our acceptance? It would be nice to know that anyway... And I assume they'll send hoodies to people beforehand too  so it seems reasonable to expect to hear more from them I reckon.
