As we do in photos, because in the mirror we are looking directly at the mirror, and are conscious of how we look.

I always get confused by this. I think it's the second option. But you can see both views on your webcam. If you look good in both views then it's all good!

Well the mirror is more precise than a picture, but it is also the reverse image of how people see you, whereas a photograph or a videotape is not reversed (i.e. the same as others perceive you, think of the lens as their eyes).
I guess both have their qualities though. Its interesting that people often prefer themselves in mirrors. I think it would be a bit of shock if someone created an electronic mirror which would reflect you as others see you.

It's like 'do I actually sound like I do when I record and play-back my voice?!'

We see ourselves differently to how other people do. Depending on what the other person is into, they might see a particular feature of yours more clearly than you perhaps do.

I know that when I look at pictures of other people, I often think that they look better/worse (sometimes by a lot) than they do in real life, so I assume that that's the case for pictures of me too. And there's just such a difference between how I look in the mirror and how I look in pictures that one or both of them must be somewhat inaccurate.

The mirror is the other way round, but a photo is just one still shot. So it's hard to say.
