I have just recently registered with the HPC as biomedical scientist via the international route, but still struggling to find a work here in UK despite the experiences i had abroad... any suggestions what to do?.. any info would be greatly appreciated  Thanks

Did you get HPC registered by working or was it just through your course? I've just done a Biomedical top up which I'm finding out too late is useless. Have you tried asking for feedback on your applications? I asked about one NHS job - they weren't too happy about having to track down my application but they did eventually. It was the usual 'not enough experience'. Have you much experience? There are a lot of people applying for the same jobs, don't let yourself get too down.

Maybe you could try applying for jobs in industry or in research/with unis while you're waiting for - well, I assume you want an NHS job?

Welcome to the club. I have four years experience (and HPC registration) and I'm still getting applications kicked back with 'sorry, we have people with more experience apply'. Things are rough right now. Just gotta keep trying.

I got my degree and had four years of experience working in a hospital laboratory prior to my coming here in the UK, I have not had any UK experience yet. Which I guess would make me less experienced?! even more.. as so they say.

Do you think going for unpaid work is a good idea?... does the NHS allow this?

I would like to work for NHS, but for now it doesn't really matter as long I can get a UK experience... although it would be less of what I really want to do.. as I have worked in a Transfusion Med for four years...

Only a thought, but why dont you try registering with an agency? Ive registered as a pharmacy technician and seen biomedical scientists required...google it. or try labmed (who im with). That way you get experience.

Hey, Congrats!

I'm about to graduate with a degree in Biomedical Science and feel right at the bottom. How long did/has it taken you? And how long did it take you get a trainee biomed position so that you could become a HPC registered??

Heya,

I actually got the trainee position before I got the degree. Applied for a four year trainee BMS post that funded an IBMS accredited degree. After the four years I had lab experience in all five disciplines (six months in Micro, Cell Path, Biochem and Haem, two years in Immunology), a degree and HPC registration.

Sadly? It's not good out there right now. My contract finished last September and even with the experience and qualifications it took me 6 months to find a job (I did do an MSc to pass the time though, so didn't start looking until February).

I don't think I've seen any trainee/band 5 posts lately. I'd say your best bet is to apply for MLA work. If you can get it (and right now a lot of people applying for MLA work have degrees) then you're in a great position next time a band 5 post comes up.

Visiting labs to get a feel for what they do is fine, but most laboratories are only interested in paid experience. (I know they shouldn't be, but from talking to people I used to work with - the vacancies are picking up several hundred applicants each. Even if they're only advertised for a week. They can afford to be as picky as they like).

I'll be honest, perseverence and making sure your application form is as brilliant as it can be are the two biggest assets you've got.

Thanks. I'm still in shock, it's only a one year post but it's something!

Edit: I had another idea. Get hold of a generic state registration portfolio (i.e. not the specialist ones). You can buy them from the IBMS. Then start it. There are whole chunks you can do by yourself at home and then mention it heavily in your application forms.

If you are looking for a Trainee position in Biomedical Science and you do not have experience or you are looking to work in the NHS labs but do not have work experience. I know an organisation called PBTS Ltd that actually will provide the competency training you require. You may even be HCPC registered from abroad and seeking experience also.
hello guys anyone wanna give me advices on how to get an approval from registering HCPC via international route??? what are the chances? im from the PH and a licensed Medical Technologist/ Clinical Lab scientist. your answers will be greatly appreciated.

Can someone please explain how can I buy material for generic state portfolio (not the specialist one) as mentioned in this post.
Hi, I received my registration already from the HCPC last month, it took almost 4 months of waiting, but it was worth it. Right now, i'm just looking for an employer that can sponsor me to work in UK. Maybe, someone here can help me on this?
