Accomodation for international student

Hi  . I am an international student and I still don't know which accomodation to choose. I would be very happy if someone could help me  . I prefer self-catered, off-campus, to be social, no more than 30 min walk from the business school.

It depends largely on what you want the environment to be like socially - do you want to be put with a lot of other international students or with a lot of british students, as often they can be quite different socially?

The self catered off campus residences include:

Boddington
(though I think this is more than 30 mins away, so probs no good) - shared bathrooms, flats shared between 5, has a shop/bar/gym/squash/common room/snooker/music room/computer room/laundry/space for cars and bikes, has a reputation for being the most sociable hall but many say this is because it is cut off from everything else and is a large residence - so everyone there parties together. Close to Headingley which is the big student area, modern style and costs about £80 per week.

Clarence Dock
(20 minutes on bus or about 30-40 mins walk) - en-suite rooms, flats shared between 5-6 people, has a shop/bar/gym/laundry/pool tables/darts/space for cars and bikes/vending machines. Is supposed to have quite a community feel, very close to the city centre so good for wandering to town for shops or clubs/bars there. In an area by the canals that is meant to be quite nice but is suffering a little with the recession (some empty office blocks and some shops closed down). Modern style, costs about £96 per week.

Devonshire (20 mins walk or about 10 mins bus) - most are shared bathrooms but some en-suites, not as soaciable as hall parties not really allowed as they have their own balls and stuff (some people say they still get away with some hall parties but think it depends on if someone complains or what the warden is like), a lot of people say it is popular with snobby type people but you can get that anywhere and I'm sure there would be plenty of normal people too. Beautiful surroundings and nice old style building. Halfway between campus and Headingley, so quite a good location. Has drama/music rooms, bar, squash/tennis, snooker, common room, laundry and spaces for cars/bikes. Costs about £95-100 for a standard room and £110-120 for en-suite (not sure of exact prices mind!).

James Baillie (also halfway between campus and Headlingley = good location, about 20 mins walk or 10 mins bus - less if you're a quick walker and no traffic obviously!). This is supposed to be very good socially, for location and for rooms themselves. This, however, makes it a very popular choice if not THE most popular. Some have said you only have a 50% chance of getting a room at this hall if you put it as your choice because of the number of people who opt to go here. Rooms are en-suite and in a modern style (though there are a small number of studio flats and cluster rooms which share a bathroom with a bath included). Includes common room, pool table, games machine, laundry and space for cars/bikes. Costs about £95-£105 for a standard room and £110 - 120 for an en-suite.

Leodis (between campus and city centre - about 15-20 mins walk from each, maybe a little less). Some people have a mixed social experience here as they have said that different buildings don't always socialise together. However, it will always completely depend on the people you happen to get housed with. The area around Leodis isn't the best (some housing estates) but you won't really have to go into there so it shouldn't matter. Rooms are modern and en-suite, and flats are shared between 4-6. Includes common room, picnic/bbq area, vending machines, laundry and space for cars/bikes. Costs about £110 - 115 pw.

Lupton (in Headingley - very good student location, about 30 mins walk to campus). Supposed to be very good socially, shared bathrooms with about 5 people. Very late buses for transport at all hours. Includes laundry and space for cars/bikes. Costs about £85 pw.

Montague Burton (Between campus and city centre - about 10 mins walk to campus and 15 mins to city centre). Shared bathrooms but each room has a washbasin, in flats of about 5. Some quiet blocks available. Includes bbq area, laundry and space for cars/bikes. Quite close to Leodis. Costs about £100 pw.

North Hill Court (between campus and Headingley, about a 15-20 minute walk from each or 5-10 mins on bus). Very small residence, only about 76 people but gives it a very community feel where everyone knows everyone. Shared bathrooms in flats of 4-6 - I have heard that some rooms have balconies - there is a real mix of room sizes with some being absolutely huge in an old style building. Close to James Baillie, so get to use their common room too. Also includes laundry, space for bikes and very limited car spaces. Costs about £75 - £90 pw.

Oxley (a bit far out I think, not too sure on distances). Most are modern, en-suite with some standard rooms with washbasins (some with double beds). Most flats are of 5 people but some are 3-15! Really nice surroundings and also meant to be quite sociable I think. Includes bar, common room, pool room, gym, music room, vending machines, laundry and space for cars/bikes. Costs about £80-95 for standard and £98 ish for en-suite.

Sentinel Towers (one of closest to business school while still being off campus - 15 mins walk and also about the same distance to city centre). Popular with international students and those wanting a quiter environment. Rooms are en-suite and flats are 4-8 people. Includes laundry and space for cars/bikes. Close to other residences like The Tannery and private halls like Opal, Concept Place and Liberty Park, so plenty of students around but not specifically a student area (not the best area again, lots of roads and stuff). Costs about £105-110 pw.

The Tannery (next to Sentinel Towers). Ran by Unite - some say it didn't have a very social environmewnt before but that was when it didn't have a common room, is meant to be much better now and a lot of people on TSR have said they are going here, most of them being party people  modern en-suite rooms with double (4 ft) beds in flats of either 3 or 6 people. Includes new common room, shop, vending machines, laundry and space for bikes (very limited parking spaces too). Costs about £110 pw with some studio flats for £115-125 pw.

The sociability often depends on how large the residences are - more people is likely to be more sociable (though small residences often just have a different sociable environment where everyone knows each other). The largest ones are The Tannery (496 people), Oxley (516 people), Montague Burton (480 people), Lupton (640 people), Leodis (713 people), James Baillie (605 people), Devonshire (651 people - includes about 250 who live in catered accommodation on the same site though), Clarence Dock (610 people) and Boddington (the largest - 1,148 people, with about 650 of these living in catered accommodation on the same site).

There's a map of where all these places are here http://www.leeds.ac.uk/accommodation/downloads/UG%20Accom%20Map%202010.pdf in case this helps you see their locations better in your head.

I would really recommend you have a look at this website: http://www.leedsstudentlife.co.uk/index.php?page=6 and the Uni's own guide can be found here: http://www.leeds.ac.uk/accommodation/flats.html
