Durham Medical School Applicants 2012
Discussion of individual medical schools and their courses for applicants and current students. Not for all those 'Am I Good Enough' questions.

Re: Medicine at DurhamThere are bound to be differences wherever you go, but the standard of teaching is pretty much the same, it really depends more on you as a person. I was told by Durham that by the time we hit clinical rounds in year 3, Newcastle know more drugs than we do, but we have better people skills, and then by the time we graduate we are evens again. All medical schools follow the standarised course structure from the GMC so all schools will teach you the same thing. From my experience the quality of teaching at durham is simply brilliant and I would recommend it to anyone.(Original post by cute_wish)
Wil there b any difference between the standard of studying at newcastle n durham ?

Whoever told you that was speaking a giant pile of streaming horse dung.
Newcastle students know the same as us about drugs. Definately not as much as us about physiology. They dont do two projects in second year either. I think its the community placement. Otherwise its the same.
Oh that link is so old gave me a good giggle at the comments -
Re: Medicine at DurhamI don't remember who it was, but it was when I was here for interview and thats what they told me :/ It might have been from their experience at some point.(Original post by fairy spangles)

Re: Medicine at DurhamWhat do you mean by projects? We do do 2 pieces of coursework in the second year, a Patient Study and an SSC.(Original post by fairy spangles)

Anyway, you can't put much stock in what students from the two schools say about differences between each other, everyones too biased. I've heard Durham students say Toon students lack personal skills and Toon students say Durham students knowledge is patchy. Most of it is based on nothing more than hearsay and a couple of anecdotes.
Plus they have fairly little crossover until 4th/5th year anyway (in 3rd year a lot of the Durham students take all the places in Tees base unit, whilst the Toon students tend to fill the others). -

What year are you in?? -
Re: Medicine at DurhamRight, so when you said "don't do" you meant "only do" i guess? We don't do the community placement thing no, what does it entail out of interest?(Original post by fairy spangles)

Right, so when you said "don't do" you meant "only do" i guess? We don't do the community placement thing no, what does it entail out of interest?
I'm a 3rd year.
Probably meant that - i get a bit muddled like that sometimes!!
Its a project throughout first and second year where you do something in the community.
For example some people go to prisons / social workers / work on projects for example youth projects in deprived areas. Its a good learning experience then write up a project on the organisation, social issues and reflections!
Have you just finished third year? I know its a very long year!!! -
Re: Medicine at DurhamOh wait, it sounds similar to the community visit we do as part of the patient study. We have to go find a non-doctor led organisation that could help out your patient, then assess it and write it up. Do you have to do that in your PS, maybe that's the Newcastle version of it? I didn't count it as a separate project, but it does have a separate word count and stuff.(Original post by fairy spangles)

If so you must be freaking insane third year is hard graft!! -
Re: Medicine at DurhamNaa Sunderland, but i don't have a car and all of my medic mates that do are in different hospitals. Got a 20 minute walk to the metro, ~45 minute ride to Sunderland then 15 minute walk on the other side, sucks to be me lol.(Original post by fairy spangles)

Re: Medicine at DurhamYeh that's what i'm planning on. At least we get a bursary that covers the cost of a year-long metro pass.(Original post by fairy spangles)

Re: Medicine at DurhamThere's basically no interaction in the first two years, some crossover in the 3rd year when you're in hospitals, then you're all together in the 1st semester of 4th year. Second half of 4th year is all SSCs and elective so you won't spend much time with the year group.(Original post by Blorcyn)
A question about Durham. What's the situation like concerning newcastle medics?
I'm not expecting weekly meetings but is there any sort of awareness of each other before fourth year, or is that like a freshers week again for the smaller Durham group?
5th year you're all in hospitals again and there will be more crossover than 3rd year because the Durham guys won't mostly be in Tees base unit.
I dunno what it's like for Durham guys at the start of 4th year, i'd be surprised if they had a freshers week attitude though. Everyones settled and got their friend groups by then, and they're only really in for 12 weeks of lectures, probably just carry on as normal but take advantage of Newcastles social scene. -
Re: Durham Medical School Applicants 2012A high UKCAT score. Over 650 but the cut off is likely to be around 700 this year. That's just a guess though.(Original post by histephenson007)
What would be a standard for a high enough UKCAT score to apply here??
