University Advice

Hello all. new poster. be gentle?

i've been looking at uni's recently its a bit early as i still have a lot of college to go through but i like to plan ahead its just...what i do and i like to know what i'm aiming for.

i want to go on to study media/journalism. preferably combining the two which i know you can do at certain uni's such as Northumbria

so my question is...which Uni's can i combine the two subjects at?. which ones best

thanks in advance

If you want to get into media and journalism, you're better off doing English! I know it sounds strange but it's true; neither of your choices are highly respected by employers in media.

A quick ucas search tells me you can study media & journalism (or similar) at:

Bangor

Cardiff University

Coventry University

University of East London

Kingston University

Richmond, The American International University in London

Roehampton University

The University of Salford

Staffordshire University

University of Winchester

(+ many more)

its more media production i want to get into. i really should have added that.

my careers ideally would either be a music supervisor/soundtrack editor for tv film. music journalism or a scriptwriter. hope that helps

Yes, like BlueJoker said, why not look into English, or social sciences in general, ie. Politics or Philosophy... This way you're much appealing to future employers in the media field, just saying.

I'm doing journalism at Sheffield in September.
Don't listen to people that say 'Do English instead'; just do what you want! If I were you, I'd do a journalism degree that offers the NCTJ qualification, such as Sheffield, Bournemouth, Nottingham Trent etc... Also, a journalism degree would most definitely be more fun than an English degree, and as you're gonna be spending a massive amount of money I think that's pretty important...

I'd reccommend doing a multimedia journalism course (eg bournemouth) or a media & cultural studies course (eg lcc).. that way you're equipped across many fields and that's what the current media industry needs - flexibility.
Plus they get you great work experience - which is a must nowadays for anyone looking to start out!

Do a strong undergraduate in something that gives you a specialism - History/Politics/English/Languages/Sciences etc and then do your journalism training at postgraduate level. Undergraduate journalism degrees are not really useful because they're often very theory-based, and take longer to give you the same skills as a 9-month practical MA.
