Mathematical Symbols & Word Processing...

Hi,

I've just purchased a macbook pro & was wondering how people go about typing up notes with mathematical symbols involved, and fractions etc for that matter. Obviously its easy to write out notes on paper but that isn't always the most practical of options.

Are there any apps for macbooks etc which may be useful for typing up such notes?
