This is what I put, roughly, I wrote it all down right after the exam because I wanted to remember. I thought I did o.k. but after reading what you guys put I'm not so sure I constructed the essays well enough..

06) Explain the meaning of childhood as a social construction.

I put something a bit garbled like "childhood long ago was much different to what we perceive as the life stage of childhood today (they were a part of the adult world). This was socially constructed by society (the innocence & protection) Phillippe Aries was a key researcher.

07) Give two reasons why changes in laws might make childhood a different experience (or something).

1) The 1969 Divorce Reform Act was a causing factor in the rise from divorce rates being 1% in 71 to 9% in 2001 creating much more broken homes and children from broken homes would be more unhappy.
2) The 1989 Childrens Act made children recognised as individuals and not property of their parents, giving them a say in custody battles so they could choose to live with the parent that made them happier.

08) Give three reasons why the birth rate has declined.

1) Wider availability of higher education means a lot of women choose to focus on their education and therefore are later having children, thus effecting the decline in the birth rate.
2) Many women in this modern day society are choosing creative singlehood, (not to have children at all)
3) The wider acceptance of homosexual couples and them being allowed to adopt has consequently affected the birth rate as in the past these sorts of couples may have tried to hide it.

09) Assess reasons for the changes in divorce rates since 1969.
I put about
the 1969 Divorce Reform act and the 1% to 9% (again.. lol)... Modern attitudes of women, rejecting male domination, separating, less stigma, don't stand for 'empty shell' marriages so much, and I forget the rest..

10) Feminist views on roles and relationships in families using item B and elsewhere.

I felt I did better on this question but I'm not so sure now.
Anne Oakly, Greer and Delphy, and Marxist femnist Zaretsky.. but wait, was he a marxist feminist? I think I talked crap about Zarestky saying that the proletariat like to come home and be 'king of their castle' expecting women to look after them .. and I definitely mentioned New Man and patriachy, luckily!..oh yeah and squeesed in symmetrical and equal roles or something.. somewhere.. can't even remember which essay now!!!

It wasn't quite like that and hopefully better than I've written here. I felt o.k about it after, but now I'm not so sure. I needed an A and I think that was only just B material :frown: :frown: :frown:

10) this would be quite easy eg talk about roles in the household then go on to talk about repressiveness of the ideologically constructed family and the socialisation of men and women eg expressive and instrumental roles. also how marriage is a prison for women. include names such as ann oakley. talk about the dual role and the double and tripple shift. also talk about feminisation of society and the new man also welfare state supporting females. yuo could also include the changing attitudes of women and how they are more career focused and less stigmatised to marry young.
perhaps all of this will put your minds to rest over wether or not you did well on the last question.

Thanks, this has made me slightly more confident in my answer. Probably wrote about gender roles a bit too much still though

For the feminist question I put:

- Dobash and Dobash (Domestic Violence)
- Money Managment - Pahl or something
- Decision Making
- Radical/Liberal/Marxist
- Chester (families more symetrical)
- Wilmott and Young (march of progress, men helping out at home)

Might have done more can't remember, in the conclusion I just disagreed with feminists because they dont take into account that power can be shared, they don't take into account non male/female relationships, and women can have different experiences so they cannot generalise (as item 2b states)

i ****ed up the divorce question... got the date mixed with the 1900 instead of 1969!! I'm so dumb. But my teacher said that aslong as the sociology is there it's fine...?

I only put down Oakley, Dobash and Dobash in the feminist question! Could've have written loads about sue sharpe but i just blanked! :frown: I've made some good points about the general feminist views and linked it in with studies and things, plus made a few critical points of the feminist view and in my hurried conclusion i said that feminism had provided some insight, but was far too presumptuous of the roles men and women have in the family. Or something like that.

It should be fine! Plus, i don't know if theres that much you can see pre-1969 about divorce, only that it carried a stigma etc. Should be fine!
Really think ive got a good A in this

Social construction of childhhod means that the term childhood is determined by society it is viewed differently in different time and different societies.

For policies and laws i put introduction of the NHS 148 and social services.

Decrease in death rates because change in the position of women now see other opportunitites other than housewife, a decrease in the infant mortality rate meant families didnt need to make up for the children they were losing. and lastly the shift from children as economic assets to economic liabilities.

Then Divorce was really good Functionalists such as Ronald Fletcher and the raising expectations of marriage means people are let down and leave women bbecoming financially independent changes in divorce law equalising grounds for divorce meant there is now an increase in women apllying for divorce i put Dobash and Dobash and Rad Fems believe marriage is a patriachal institution and the raising importance offeminism meant women were encouraged to break out of marriages. etc

Then on the feminism and family roles i talked about parsons instrumental and expressive roles how they are said to be biological feminsist argue against this then Young and willmot symetrical families in bethnal green + march of progress then Ann oakly this is exagerated also Elizabeth Bott and conjugal roles then dual burden and triple shift and comercialisation of housework etc.

I got a B in January really think ill get an A this time, the teacher that taught me divorce was crap so i taught my self haha

This was an amazing paper! Really was over the moon when I saw the questions, really could elaborate on the birth and divorce question essays!

Only thing I was unsure about was the laws of childhood :\ including the laws on drinking/smoking and restricting them going to into certain clubs and bars and driving etc.
Not really sure if that counted tbh!

Apart from that an excellent paper but dreading Fridays education paper! :|

Sociology exam - Families and Households May 18th aftermath

How did everyone do?

I didn't finish the paper :frown: but think I have done well. It depends on the results though...

i did that paper, wow... question 10 was a beast :'( i went blank on that question (n)
Absolutely perfect. Couldn't have had a better paper. Anyone have any predictions for Education?

Education - I predict Marxism. I don't know why.
I wrote considerly less for divorce than I did for feminism which I thought was strange considering I knew more for divorce. When I read the feminist question I was like OH NO! :frown:
This is what I put:
4 types of feminists - radical, liberal, marxist and difference - very briefly explained as I couldn't remember what they did
How oakley is against young and willmotts symmetriccal family
How they don't agree with functionalist view that the roles are biological
Dunne's study of the 37 lesbian couples
dual burden - brief
Duncombe and Marsden very briefly on triple shift
Dobash and Dobash again extremely briefly on domestic violence
Gershuny: lagged adapation and the commercialisation of housework - how it helps women now but they still want more etc (radical)
how radical feminsts think men and women should be seperate
Divorce- women are now more free, courts favour them etc

Is this right? I felt I didn't put enough a02. What do you think I could get for that essay out of 24? It was brief points in some places though :/
