Re: UCL Applicant Thread for 2012 EntryI guess it depends on what you judge it by. If it's support, as discussed in the thread, then you will find that in a lot of the best universities (especially London ones), that the support from lecturers and academic staff isn't what you'd expect it to be. For example, at LSE, lots of people will tell you that teachers aren't amazing. But LSE is definitely not rubbish for Economics, and Imperial is definitely not rubbish for maths!(Original post by Legendary)

Re: UCL Applicant Thread for 2012 EntryMight of over exaggerated there but its too focused on research I would rather go to another one of my choices to get a better degree although the degree at Imperial no less then any other degree at a top institution maybe at the end it will be down to preference. I liked the facilities at Imperial though.(Original post by joshgoldman)

Re: UCL Applicant Thread for 2012 EntryFair enough. Going to any top 6(ish) university is signing up to a massive commitment to work, and to chase people, rather than be chased like at school.(Original post by Legendary)

Re: UCL Applicant Thread for 2012 EntryI will also add that if your interview fell on the strike day, as mine did the interviews were conducted in pairs, due to the lack of lecturers meaning the interviews had to be condensed. So.. if you have an interview coming up it may be one-on-one instead, either way be prepared for any eventuality (:(Original post by Mr Inquisitive)
It varies subject to subject, i.e. some will have one-to-one interviews, some won't (we didn't for Philosophy, for example). It was extremely interesting; we had a lecture on philosophical arguments and exploring various views, and then a written test on the content of the talk.
As we weren't interviewed individually, nothing was asked about personal statements. -
Re: UCL Applicant Thread for 2012 EntryI see.. So there isn't really any preparation I can do, as the written test will be on the subject they decide to do the lecture on? I was wondering if there was any particular philosophical texts I should be reading, or perhaps going over my personal statement but I'm assuming that's not the case.(Original post by Mr Inquisitive)

Re: UCL Applicant Thread for 2012 EntryYeah, that's exactly right. Don't worry about preparation, there were pretentious people en masse spouting names of philosophers in the pre-lecture gathering in hopes of intimidating other candidates (quite hilarious, may I add), but you're actually encouraged not to use outside knowledge; it would make it an unfair assessment of the group - you'll be told at the lecture, though.(Original post by Rhia23)

I think it would be good to go over any books you've read, even if just to refresh yourself on the style of philosophical arguments and to begin to analyse how they're articulated, would be my advice.Last edited by Mr Inquisitive; 31-12-2011 at 13:10. -
Re: UCL Applicant Thread for 2012 Entryoh wow thats surprising but i guess they understand that loads of people will be applying for straight maths everywhere(Original post by Legendary)
Maths and economics. Though I only did economics up till gcse.
They didn't seem to care though I didn't even write a thing about economics in my personal statement. I think I'll visit my choices before I decide I've yet to visit UCL, LSE and Warwick. Warick's my highest offer so far though so I might need to do STEP again to make sure I meet it if I go for it.
good luck with everything

Re: UCL Applicant Thread for 2012 EntrySome rejections, fewer interviews and even fewer offers! We should make our own English thread for moral support haha.(Original post by lp94)
Has anyone applying for English had a reply/interview yet?
I sent mine in October and still haven't heard a thing, although I'm guessing that's a good thing as I haven't been rejected yet.
