congratulations any more interviews for Goldsmiths? Anybody heards from the FA + Art History? ... losing hope now that people are hearing back eeek :frown:

Don't worry; I'm sure FA + Art History is a little different. Have a search around studentroom threads from last year to see when people received their interviews? Frankly, I'm surprised some of ours came so early - last year it seemed to be around 23/24, so yeah. Stay calm and carry on.

I got one of their 'preparing to study' bog standard spam mails earlier, so we're probably still being considered. Hopefully anyway, I'm praying for an interview!

Yeah, I got that too! Quite annoying, IMO. We're not even students there yet so being given this is pointless. Best of luck to you!

lol haven't heard a word from goldsmiths either, probably means I'm either being rejected, or I'm at the bottom of the pile, as my surname begins with an S and I uploaded my folio like 2 mins before the deadline. hmmm

It does, doesn't it? =_= Goldsmiths, forever cockblock.

And no, it doesn't say at all. Just regular same old statistics, I guess?
Oh, it just crossed my mind that some of you might like to see what part of the Goldsmiths interview offer email stated:

Please bring a portfolio of recent work with you to show the selection tutor(s). This should consist of selections of original artwork and /or documentation in the form of photographs, DVD, video documentation etc. Please ensure that the work is easily portable; also note that we do not have the facilities to store any such items at the College. Video and audio work should be ON DVDs and CDs or in QuickTime or mp3 file formats to be viewed on a computer running MacOSX. If you have any other software requirements, please contact the Art department well in advance of your interview date and they will endeavour to meet your needs. Note that you will not be able to access the internet to show on-line work. Work that has been previously submitted for Eportfolio review can be shown at the interview - it is unlikely that you would be interviewed by the same member of staff who reviewed your portfolio, so you should decide if you would rather show that WORK, more recent work, or a combination of both at interview. We also require you to bring an example of written work. It is acceptable to bring the essay you submitted at portfolio review stage, or you may select a more recent piece of writing if you choose. Interviews generally last around 20 - 25 minutes.

My train ticket was £196. Damn the morning rush hour and the mainline! Hahah

 Do you have a railcard? If not, its really worth it as i save more than the cost of the railcard when ever i've been to london (2/3 times since i've had it) and then little bits here and there  What day did you drop it off?

Oh mannnn, I was hoping they'd have more this year seeing as they're taking on extra students. Gutted. I don't actually dare try to log in to the e-portfolio in case I don't get the same message :frown:

Yeah I do, I only got 9% off on this one though. I dropped it off on Tuesday. I got cheap tube tickets with it though.

There was a train like 15 later for £30 but I'd have been late and I wasnt sure if they'd accept my work. I didnt know there was going to be a queue hahah
Whaaaat not you all too
No one can do any work atm and college today was just everyone like ':frown: I haven't heard back from slade have you? Oh yes you have...well done... I guess :frown: :cry2: :frown:'

My friend got an interview at brighton
Haven't heard anything yet but his was due before mine... Hopefullllly I'll see sooon

And I don't think any BAFAHA applicants have heard...

Also we think slade's liking makers as opposed to painters. Only one person in our painting group is actually properly painty and the rest who got an interview are all quite sculptural and not so canvas based.

Omg same, was kind of rocking back and forth mentally in my mind all day and actually doing work in order to not think, haha. And obsessively checking my email.

Wow, how many people in your painting group have actually gotten interviews to Slade? BA or BFA? And I would think that the choosing of "makers" as opposed to "painters" is less a reflection of Slade as a reflection of contemporary art in general these days, although Slade DOES have an entire practice path dedicated to painting so I wouldn't worry.

Lol nah we were just ****ing around... No ones really been working which is bad
I'd say about 8 people have got interviews so far... Well the ones I know, and I have no idea about individuals but I assume BA.
Yeah you're right, and I'd say that too. But everyone does assume slade to be all painty and old master type but I guess they are trying to be all contemporary.
Also we have two tutors who are so boring and not rated at all (well not by me) who both went to slade... Put me off even more tehehe
Just had a look back in the forums and it seems last year around very end of Feb/beginning of March is when people hear from Goldsmiths BAFAAH so hopefully won't be any later than that.

Hi! I'd really like some advice on foundation courses (I can already tell this is quite a heated topic on this thread!)
I've received an unconditional offer for the Fine Art BA at Kent, and a place on Loughborough's foundation course, after they reviewed my portfolios.
I'm still waiting on Edinburgh, Reading and UCL for degree courses and Central Saint Martin's for a foundation.
If I get offers from Reading or UCL, I really want to accept them, because I love the unis and the courses they offer, but if I don't get offers from them, I'm considering UAL and Loughborough's foundations, even though I'm quite keen on Kent.
Could someone that's done a foundation please answer some of my questions? I'd really really appreciate it!

1. How are they taught? Is it big group work, or small tutorials?
2. Is there more focus on your skills and technique, rather than the development of concepts/ideas?
3. Did your foundation course help you choose the specific art degree course that you wanted? (e.g. Graphic design/Fine Art/Ceramics etc.) - and did it change your mind on what medium you originally thought you were good at/enjoyed the most?
4. Is there a big focus on tutor-led development, or was it very self-directed?
5. What was your favourite aspects of the course/what made it beneficial for you?
6. Why did you decide to take a foundation course, and why do you think it help you develop better than your a level did?

I like the fact that during a foundation I wouldn't have to worry about my other subjects, like during my a levels. It's also really encouraging that the course itself is free (apart from accomodation/living expenses etc.)

I originally applied to foundation courses as a 'backup plan' incase I didn't get onto any degree courses, but now that I've heard so much good stuff about them I'm unsure!

Any help/advice would be much appreciated - Thanks!

I know you've had some replies to this already, but I might as well give my opinion since most foundation courses are slightly different (though the general ideas are the same).

1) I only have 2 full days and one half day a week "contact hours" (Tuesday to Thursday lunchtime), where I have to be in college (mine's just the local college though, nothing fancy). On Tuesday mornings we have tutorial with our personal tutors, which is in a group of about 15. Tuesday afternoons we can choose either life drawing, a specialist workshop (e.g. bookbinding) or personal work, all of which are with other tutor groups (like 30ish in a room). Wednesdays and Thursdays are with our specialist tutors (I have 2 for fine art/printmaking, one of whom is also my personal tutor), in a group of about 20. People generally just get on with their own thing, but sometimes we have full group crits and other times you can have a one-to-one talk with a tutor.

2) Again, people generally get on with their own thing, but there is definitely an emphasis on ideas over technique. You could sit drawing pictures from photos, but the tutors would want to know why and if there's no real reason behind it then they're going to try to steer you back to something with more meaning. There's no sense of "telling off" if you do something meaningless, but to be honest it would be a waste of your own time if you did. The foundation year is all about building a portfolio and developing your ideas, so there's not much point in you being there if you're not going to try. So yeah, it's much more ideas-based, but it's individual and everyone works differently. There are skills-based workshops sometimes, though, like screenprinting or intaglio printing and stuff, and the first four weeks is an "exploratory stage" where you go around trying out the different areas (for us it's 3D, textiles, visual communications and printmaking).

3) I'm probably not the best person for this question! I started out thinking I wanted to do fine art, and after applying for fine art courses I'm now questioning if I should be doing illustration instead. So actually, yeah, maybe it has done something, I just still haven't worked out what yet! It's more like I've finally been able to explore what I want to do (illustration was pretty looked-down-upon at my sixth form), and I'm now trying to see where that fits into best. A lot of other people on my course have completely changed their ideas though (e.g. some have changed from fine art to furniture design).

4) I'm not sure what you mean by tutor-led development, but to be honest I wouldn't say that the tutors have had a big part in my personal development at all. They help you if you need help, but I've always worked independently and I think they know that I don't want them "helping" me just for the sake of it. Basically, it's self-led but the tutors are there and very willing to help if you need/want them to.

5) I'm still on the course, but so far the best bit has just been being able to do what I want to do and not feeling like I have to fit it into an exam mark scheme or something. For A-Level you get words and titles to base your work around, and that can be really restrictive/force you into doing something that you don't really want to be doing. At the start of the foundation, I was like "...okay, are we going to get told what we're meant to be doing, or...?", but I think once you get over the fact that you can do what you like, it's really good. It's a bit scary at first, though (which is why I don't see how people can go straight from A-Level to degree-level!).

6) I originally thought I had to do a foundation, because I really wanted to go to Brighton and a foundation was a requirement. Although I now think my reasoning was pretty stupid, I'm really pleased with my decision 'cause I really needed this course. You just don't realise how...A-Levely your work is until you start a foundation! It's just so undeveloped, because you constantly have to go through it thinking "okay, that's AO1, that's AO2, I need some more AO3...", and your work is reduced to points in a mark scheme. There's a form of mark scheme for the foundation, but it's nothing like that, and as long as you develop your ideas etc. you don't really have to worry about it.

Sorry that was so long! As for your choices, I would pick Loughborough over CSM because as other people have said, the CSM course is ridiculously full. There are 90 people on my course, and I think someone said CSM have 700? You're never going to get the attention you need with that amount of people.
