You're welcome Mine is http://www.flickr.com/photos/villagewhisper/ It's really annoying though, 'cause some of that stuff is from a while ago, and I've got some better work that I've done since I sent it to Brighton. I wish I'd had your deadline, mine was at the end of January! I'm not really expecting an interview, though...I think I was pushing it a bit by including the etchings, since it's a painting course! Oh well.

Did you go to the Brighton open day? Out of the four open days I've been to, that one was my favourite (that's including the Slade). Maybe that was because it was the first place I saw, but it's just really nice in general. But yeah, I partly applied there because it's by the sea, too I love that you'd get the city part of it, and the beach part too...It's completely different to where I live, where there's basically just a lot of fields.

I hope I hear back soon, and good luck to you too!

I think I get what you mean about the writing, now. I just left mine as a great long list, so maybe that's why I couldn't find it. I don't think there's much point in changing it now, though, since I have 244 views which I assume means they've already looked at it.
oh yes! just realised i've already had a look at yours when I flicked back through the posts, great stuff! Especially love the Alice in wonderland reoccuring theme, you have an eye for detail. Don't hate me for saying this as I think it's been mentioned before but I have to agree that your work has an illustrative edge to it, which isn't a bad thing, just how do you feel about illustration vs. fine art now that you've had time to think about it some more?

and yes, the mighty fields!! haha I can relate to that, a very small town I live in but spent my childhood by the Black sea on the coast :/ miss it much, that's why I'd love to be in Brighton. unfortunately not had the chance to go to an open day, maybe for the best too in case i don't get in so then I won't know what i'll be missing!!! what did you think of Slade? I applied there also and just waiting to hear back

Oh, thanks Haha, I don't hate you for saying it at all, it's true! I'm still thinking about it, really. I'm gonna go ahead with my application for fine art at the moment and see what happens, but if I don't get the offers I want I think I'll wait a year and make a decision as to which course I really want to do. I think I'd be fine on a fine art course that was pretty flexible in letting you do what you want to do. That's why I'm basically 100% sure I'm getting a rejection from the Slade, 'cause they're really fine-arty. I think my work's more illustrative in subject matter than it is in technique though, if you know what I mean. Like, I don't do illustrations, but there's a bit of a narrative going on. I think I could fit on either course, provided they were both flexible.

I'm sort of thinking about Nottingham Trent now, though, since some of the work in their online student galleries actually do look like illustrations. If they can get away with doing that, then I'm sure I'd be okay with what I do. I said before that I wouldn't accept an offer from them, but I'm going to be more open-minded when I go for my interview, I think. Then at least if I got an offer I'd have a choice in terms of whether I wait another year or not.

Ah, living by the sea must have been nice! Hopefully you will get an offer from Brighton, 'cause I'm sure you'd like it I kinda went around the Slade thinking "I don't want to like it, I don't want to like it", because I was sure I wouldn't get in so if I hated it I could apply somewhere else. It's really nice, though It has an old, art-school feel about it, and the studios are pretty big. What did you think, or didn't you go?

My personal opinion of the Slade was that it is a bit ? ? Repuation is a very good thing, however, it is also easy to rely on it. Their admin is not too good.

It is the only course I've applied to where you have to pay to submit a portfolio!!! But in a way I turn against this snobbery. And no, I haven't heard from them yet, but then again I haven't looked recently: I refuse to get caught up in the hysteria.

I am 17, and who is to say if I am or not,any good? I have had two offers from good Uni's Lancaster and Aber. So I can't be too bad can I?

Much is going on in higher education - lots of the London Unis are full of overseas students ( lovely though they are) , but its about money as well as talent: I looked at some of the Chelsea stuff online the other day and thought!!!!????*** Crap

Perhaps people should look at the student room thread about applying for medicine this year as it seems as daft as the way art students are treated. Some of these guys are overqualified on paper for where they apply and are still rejected... but then medicine has always been more about who you know than what you know.

I understand what your saying, applying to fine art is unpredictable because it is subjective. Many fully qualified students get rejected, and that's probably the same with medicine..

But if you feel so strongly about the Slade, why did you apply?

Anybody else apart from Princeling and joelchan have a Tumblr that they use? I'm trying to make a little website on it now and looking for a few arty people to follow . No news today..... apart from the essay man mentioned in my Brighton invitation letter had retired so they hadn't edited the letter properly from last year.

I think the main thing to consider for fine art vs. illustration is whether you are self-driven and inspired enough by your own concepts and ideas as opposing to working from a brief that someone else sets you in illustration.

I'm on a foundation course and the first stage was all about media experimentation and exploration as with most foundation courses...trying out print, film, photography, painting, fashion etc. however for the second stage just before Xmas we had to choose an area to specialise in. Although I always thought I would end up in fine art because I have always preffered painting most to everything else, the tutors advised me to specialise in illustration although they did say I could do equally well in both areas so it was really up to me. That's when I took advantage of the situation and made it work for me, I chose to specialise in illustration for 2 weeks to see if it suited me, it did not, I really missed painting so I swapped to fine art
Also, being told what to do and working to a brief constantly with little room to breathe bugged the crap outta me.

Sounds like you got it pretty much figured out though, always good to have plan b. As for Slade, again, didn't go to an open day, I figured I will get the chance to see the unis when I go for my interviews.

Yeah I know, that's the thing. Because I get my inspiration from books, people automatically think "oh, illustration". It's not really like that though, 'cause I kind of relate the books back to people and psychology, which are where my own ideas come in. So it literally is a combination of the two! I'd hate to work to briefs all the time, though it might be fun to start with. I like the more fine arty illustration courses (like Falmouth, I think) where you can pretty much do what you like, but they'd be hard to get into.

We did an exploratory stage at the start of my foundation, too, only we were pretty limited to areas we could specialise in. The area that illustration would most fit into is also where all the graphic design and film people are, which was a bit off-putting since people wanting to do illustration are definitely in the minority. I went for fine art/printmaking basically because the studio is so much bigger/nicer (the visual communications room is literally like a primary school classroom), but you can still pretty much do what you want.

I keep checking my email, too! I keep refreshing, even though it automatically updates if I get an email...If your UCAS changes, you get an email from Track straight away, right? Every time I check Track, the first thing I see is "Unsuccessful" from LCA, and I think it's from Brighton or Slade I don't want to go away from my laptop in case I miss something, so I'm not doing a lot other than checking this thread every few minutes...

I don't know if you're interested in tattoos at all, but there are two that I've been following (I don't have an account anymore, though) for a couple of years, and some of the tattoos posted are pretty arty.
