Re: Can I still be a doctor? To cut a longish story short - I changed my mind at 18/19 as to what I wanted to do.(Original post by e...)
So why did you choose medicine as a career path?
I'm not a bleeding heart wanted to do it since I was a fetus guy.
I genuinely enjoy working with people, my favourite subjects are sciencey and I have a wicked memory. Also it's possibly a job for life. Therefore I said yes.
I'm good at passing exams on rote learning which means I'm good for medicine - bad for something like e.g. physics with understanding

Idiots who clearly have no idea about anything should stay away from the Medicine forum. Seriously.
(this isn't aimed at the person above me - just generally)
)? Everyone knows that people with great grades and all the rest of it miss out every year because of the CDD degrees taking up space. And it's not like we can take or leave doctors- we need them.
I could have kept my little rant to myself, but gosh why do you care? -

Secondly if we got rid of other uni course spaces that doesn't = one medical school place.
Each medical school has it's physical constraints - secondly the government funds ~ £250,000 for each student. -
Re: Can I still be a doctor?A degree course you need a C grade and two Ds to get onto, that kind of thing. Basically everyone who's stupid can get on a uni course and everyone who's smart and lucky can get on a uni course, but if you're just smart...there's not a whole lot of hope. It shouldn't be based on luck and safety nets, should it? Where do we place merit now? Maybe that's too simple, but that's how it comes across. I've seen lots of people complaining about it here, why pick on me?(Original post by Philosoraptor)

Well, it could, because one place= one portion of funding. If we free up lots of funds from old useless courses, that can be directed towards medicine courses. And new schools. -
Re: Can I still be a doctor?I wasn't picking on you - you quoted my message lol.(Original post by chinaberry)

I'm in agreement with your point... -
Re: Can I still be a doctor?"Picking on me"- didn't know how else to put it- singling out, then(Original post by Philosoraptor)

I meant in the original post, don't think I was being wildly unreasonably paranoid, but never mind!
Okay then. -
Re: Can I still be a doctor? You think you were the only non medic commenting? It was a general statement - and tbh more aimed at those non medics who negged me whilst the OP actually gave me rep... :/(Original post by chinaberry)

Okay then.I for one do not recall repping you on what you claim. Anyway I would like you 2 two to please keep it civil as I value both your comments, perhaps some more than others however I still value them. Philosoraptor please do not make indirect comments which can equally be regarded as generalisations.(Original post by Philosoraptor)

Moving on, can anyone please explain to me how to approach the possibilty of shadowing a doctor. How would I go about it?Last edited by e...; 03-06-2011 at 17:24. -
Re: Can I still be a doctor?I would definitely let a teacher know. it's important to have some kind of a mentor who will help you with all of these applications and keep pushing you in the right direction. Teachers aren't there to ridicule you, or your family situation, they there as a means of support. Find a teacher you feel comfortable with (even if they don't teach you anymore) and just explain the salient point, not necessarily all the detail. good luck.(Original post by e...)
Thanks. It seems that I have to inform my teachers about my situation which I'm slightly reluctant to do if I'm honest. When I go college will there a certian teacher that deals with this type of thing would I have to approach a normal teacher. I ask this because there used to be a teacher in my school that dealed with such(I never told about my situation) but was made redundant due to Government cutting in all schools which I'm not sure if its applicable to all schools. -
Re: Can I still be a doctor? Thanks. I want to tell my new sixth form about my situation but my parents, particularly my dad, is against it. I was recently filling out my acceptance form for my acceptance of a conditional offer from the sixth form where there was section that stated that we should write in any other issues that may affect my education such as family issues or housing, my dad didn't fill it, so I asked my dad why and he got all defensive... I feel they have the mentality of if my school get involved they may bring in the social services; they perhaps instilled this doctrine in me..(Original post by malaz_197)

Re: Can I still be a doctor?
UPDATE:
So i'm now at sixth form studying for my A levels which are Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics and History. I have not done January exams as my college does not do them however I am predicted 4As although I don't want to get complacent.
On the otherhand my GCSE results were not that great:
1 A* history
8 As including Maths, Addtional Science, English Literature
2 Bs Spanish and English Language ;/
1 C in Astrophysics from year 9
I've got 1 week of work experience in a GP and I am yet to get more
Also haven't really started volunteering official but I do help out with a lot of elderly people in my area.
Thanks for all your support

Re: Can I still be a doctor?Just avoid a couple of places and those GCSEs will be more than good enough(Original post by e...)

Re: Can I still be a doctor? Those GCSEs aren't bad - but make sure you get some work experience in a hospital too as well as those A grades. Good luck(Original post by e...)

BUT I DON'T have the same great predicted grades as you. How do you it? I feel like I should give up... -

Regardless of what people say, you can turn things around. Just be patient and persevere. As corny as this sounds, you are in control of your destiny, despite what life throws at you, your actions are what make you.
I revise in one hour time slots and take regular breaks of 15 minutes. Practice with your friends - great source of informatiobitty don't get distracted! or find a quiet place e.g library. Generic stuff really but it works, you just need to find your revision technique.
Hey watch this: http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=ujMP41Rphzc
It's really motivating, especially the one line: 'you want a better life, prove it'
Your reponse should be: CHALLENGE ACCEPTED!
Good luck
