I wouldn't worry, lots of people who are going to my camp have only just been placed and lots of people don't get placed right until June. I think you just have to be patient, as hard as it is! The Visa isn't refunable, but I think the frees are. Who are you going with?
I'm with CCUSA. Just wanted to update if anyone's lurking this thread and has yet to get a job - I've just been placed so don't lose hope guys!

Camp America is not a camp but a company that just works as a recruitment agency for the camps.

All of the agencies (Americamp, BUNAC, Camp America & more) will have contact with camps that do arts and performing arts.

You can compare and see which is the best company here.

    Hi Laura

I went with CCUSA for my first time, who were awesome. I had to go with Camp leaders when i returned to my camp for the second year, but they were also very good from what I remember. I would highly reccommend goign with CCUSA as they have a very wide variety of camps on their books, and great customer service.

Apply as early as you can, which is usually in September after the camp season. Each camp has a different start date, but it's usually in June, perfect for after university. You're usually there for 2 months, and the usual visa allows you to stay in the country for up to 1 month afterwards so you can go travelling if you want to.

There are many different types of camp. I went to a private sleepway camp, where I lived with one age group of kids (9yrs girls) but taught activities to 9-16yrs. There are also day camps, where you get the evenings off (good for socialising, but you don't get to know the kids as well, and they usually leave after 3 weeks and you get a new set of kids), disability camps (very physically and mentally hard apaprently but totally worth it) and religious camps (I'm sure there are some more strict camps out there, but mine was technically a 'jewish' camp but didn't really have any impact on day to day camp life other than singing a few songs, and not being able to eat dairy and meat together. Don't be put off if they send you to a religious camp because 50% of the staff at mine weren't!)

Unless you're a lifeguard/sailing/swimming teacher, you don't really need any offical qualifications or experience, just passion, enthusiasm, and common sense. Different camps do different activities so just tell your agency what you're into. Or if you get in there early you can apply to be a 'general' where you don't teach, but go around with the kids to all the various activities and look after them day to day. At my camp it was the Americans who had that job, but we got to do it to a certain extent too. Really depends on the specific camp.

Have a look at a the old threads on TSR from a few years back, loads of info if you look through it. But DO IT! Best 2 summers of my life

Random question, but what is the social like at Camp? Whilst I appreciate it isn't a holiday and shouldn't be treated that way, but on weekends off can you let your hair down and have some drinks with people? Would be a great way to get to know people and meet more people as well!

I am 21 so the drinking age won't be an issue, I just want to have a good time and embrace the work hard-play hard mentality.

    Thanks!

I'm really temped to sign up for camp america in 2013, however, I'm worried how sport orientated it is?! I horseride, but that's about it, whilst I don't mind participating, I'm throughly useless at anything like tennis, football (anything that involves throwing/catching/kicking a ball really!)

Here is the complete list of camp activities, as copied and pasted directly from the Camp America website! If you have any other, unlisted skills (e.g chess, netball, cricket, rugby, rounders, tiddlywinks etc.)you can still include them in your application, under the 'exceptional skills / other' heading! As you can see, there are many non-sporting activities that you can get involved in!! Horse riding is a big activity at some camps, although a lot of states stipulate a minimum age of 21+ to be hired as a riding instructor

    What You Do
One of the biggest misconceptions of the Camp America programme is that we're all about sports, and sports alone - and that really couldn't be further from the truth. In terms of market fairness (which every student deserves) I would like to make it clear that there are alternative to Camp America.

The top companies for camping in America are (in no particular order):

    Americamp
    Camp America
    BUNAC
    Camp Leaders
    & more.

I would suggest to any student that they do more reading and get a feel for every company and their charges, wages and ethics etc. Then you can make your own informed decision.

    Hope this helps.

    I totally agree, The Jakal!

The reason why I pasted Camp America's details in my last post, is because TillyTots specifically mentioned CA in hers! However, that information is pertinent, whichever company you use!

Anyone contemplating working at a summer camp in the USA would be very wise to shop around first, because different companies suit different needs!

Thanks and I'm glad you agree.

I think the problem a lot of students have is that they believe Camp America is the name for going out to America and working. They are not aware that it's a company and that there are others out there.

Totally in agreement with you even further, The Jakal! You have hit the nail absolutely on the head.... If I didn't know better (LOL), I would imagine that you actually have close connections in the summer camp staff recruitment industry, or are a seasoned summer camp staffer...as indeed is my particular situation!!!

I do find it strange how so many people say they want to 'Go to Camp America', and think that it is a particular specific place......This misconception comes up time and time and time and time and time again!

Has anyone done Kamp with BUNAC isit any good? I'm really interested in this and I've heard you don't always have to work with kids like you could clean , work in the kitchen etc. I wouldn't mind trying out for a leader at some point maybe if I go a second time. How much experience did you need to have?
What age are most people? I'm only 19 but by next year I'll be 20 at the time.

Both references are required for Camp America, without exception, and it is the responsibility of each applicant to obtain their own references.

Not sure about BUNAC, but I'm sure their website / Facebook will give you the required information!
