Re: Official CHRISTOPHER HITCHENS Appreciation ThreadTheists being hypocritical?(Original post by Diety)
It just struck me as unfair that the religious folks on TSR can come on the atheist thread and get into debate (which is good), but if we even try to do the same on their thread they get super offended and say "this is a private thread! No atheists!"
Can't believe that. -

cheekily posted it on the Catholic Society thread in an Atheist Soc dare and got reported

Re: Official CHRISTOPHER HITCHENS Appreciation Thread
It is often argued that god cannot be disproved. This is only in the same way that the existence of a teapot orbiting the sun cannot be disproved with our current technology. Clearly, lack of disproof of something is not a reason to believe in it.
With the definitive explanations given by science, the existence of a god is just as unnecissary to explain our situation as the existence of a teapot orbiting the sun. A god only serves to complicate the explanation. No matter how hard a creationist tries, he cannot get over the fact that if you use a god to explain our existence, you still have to explain the god's existence. It doesn't get the thinking person anywhere.
So the burden of proof surely lies with the religionists. -

Re: Official CHRISTOPHER HITCHENS Appreciation Thread
If I were amendable to worshiping gods, I would worship Christopher Hitchens. I loved how this man HITCHSLAPPED all the Muslims and their apologists
Favorite quote: ” Islam is “a rather obvious and ill-arranged set of plagiarisms”
hehe that had me on the floor in laughter first time I read it. So true! -
Much love for Christopher, he's leaving a gaping whole in the public arena, we all got to take up the slack of his passing and hand out a couple of hitch slaps here and there when the hypocrites get rowdy best way to do his memory justice - http://m.youtube.com/watch?feature=plpp&v=J7aS7m3odqI

I would urge any Hitchens fan or anyone against racism to watch this video. Hitchens rips both of these ignorant white supremacists. Great entertainment. -
Re: Official CHRISTOPHER HITCHENS Appreciation Thread
I am a huge fan of Hitchens and always lend my copy of Hitch-22 out to my friends. His collected essays on Atheism was the best single guide to all branches of Atheist thought that I have yet to find.
He was an incredible gentleman and he is sets an incredible standard that is difficult to follow.
Best thing about him that I discovered recently? When I was watching the Collision film with Hitch and Douglas Wilson, throughout the opening intro scene the post-rock band (one of my favourites) Russian Circles were playing. A small part of me hopes that Hitch had something to do with this

Anyone in favour of maintaining free speech should listen carefully to what Christopher Hitchens says in this speech. It is one of the best speeches I have heard and any liberal should listen to it. -

Re: Official CHRISTOPHER HITCHENS Appreciation ThreadIn reference especially to the comments about "Islamophobia", I am routinely told whenever I speak up about the threats to freedom of speech and intellectual liberty posed by religions in general and the "one monotheism in particular" that I am engaging in bigoted behaviour and racism towards a specific religion. When I attempt to criticize treatment of women in certain cultures, I am told that I have no right to judge, and indeed accused of sexism myself for daring to hold a view that there is an objective standard of ethics regarding gender relations. And that's just a percentage.(Original post by King Kebab)
