I came across the Hardiman Research Scholarship at the National University of Ireland, Galway today. Deadline for applications is June 17th 2011. Info is below and you can apply here

The Hardiman Research Scholarships offer opportunities for suitably qualified individuals to pursue a postgraduate degree by research. The scholarships support world-class basic research in the Humanities and Social Sciences, including Law and Business Studies (Stream A) and in the broad areas of Science, Medicine, Engineering and Informatics (Stream B) . Its primary strategic aim is to attract the best students to NUI Galway and to support their development as innovative individuals who will contribute globally to economic, cultural and social development.

While a majority of postgraduate awards supported by the Hardiman Scholarships will be awarded to European Union (EU) citizens, or to those who are ordinarily resident within a member state of the EU, a proportion of awards will also be offered to exceptional candidates who are ordinarily resident in non- EU member states. Scholarships will be awarded only to those who will engage full-time in research during the period of the award in NUI Galway.

The Hardiman Scholarship programme does not accept applications from persons currently registered as PhD candidates

Successful applicants will be expected to have a first or upper second class honours primary degree or equivalent. For students with undergraduate results expressed in GPA (“Grade Point Average”) or QCA form, in the Irish university system a first corresponds to a 3.6 or above and an upper second corresponds to a 3.2 or above (but less than a 3.6).
This is for structured PhD's in a wide variety of subjects

NB: I can't find info on the value of this scholarship but I'm sure it'll either be posted soon or you can e-mail to find out

Although the idea is sound, wouldn't a wiki-type format be more suitable? I can foresee it being a bit bewildering once this thread expands to more than a few pages.

    Re: Postgraduate Scholarship Info Thread
    Great idea!!!

Here's one for students wishing to continue their studies in Scotland:

Carnegie Trust for the Universities of Scotland

The Carnegie Trust has a number of different scholarships available - taught postgraduate bursaries, PhD scholarships, and scholarships for a year of study in the US.

    Taught Postgraduate Bursaries:

These Bursaries are awarded to students on a one-year, taught, post-graduate degree course at a Scottish university. Pre-doctoral courses and post-graduate diploma or certificate courses are not funded under this Scheme. It is permissible that the one-year course be taken on a half-time basis over two consecutive years. Bursaries can only be awarded to students before they embark on the course. The Bursary is to be applied to payment of the tuition fees.

Applicants must be Scottish by birth, descent (at least one parent born in Scotland) or have been continuously resident in Scotland for a period of at least three years for the purpose of secondary or tertiary education in Scotland. Residence in Scotland for any other purpose does not make an applicant eligible. Vacations, periods of absence through illness and periods spent outside Scotland as part of a Scottish educational course shall not be taken into account in determining whether the residence has been continuous.

Candidates who wish to be considered for one of these Bursaries should approach the university where they wish to study and NOT the Trust.

    Carnegie/Caledonian Scholarships:

Graduates of a Scottish university holding or expecting to achieve a degree with first-class honours in any subject and intending to pursue three years of postgraduate research leading to a PhD can be nominated by their university for the award of a Carnegie Scholarship. Only students who have undertaken or are undertaking their first degree at a Scottish university are eligible. Students who have not undertaken their first degree at a Scottish university but are undertaking a one year postgraduate degree at a Scottish university are not eligible to apply for a Scholarship. Students in their final undergraduate year, who are expected to achieve first-class honours, may be nominated and withdran if they fail to do achieve this. Carnegie Scholarships, which can be held at any university in the United Kingdom, but mostly in Scotland, provide fees, maintenance, research and travel allowances. Scholars are also eligible to apply for Carnegie Research Grants. Nominations must be made by a senior member of academic staff from a Scottish university. Nominators are asked to submit their nomination electronically by 15th March, together with the applicant’s form and the referees' forms, followed by a signed hard copy. Nominations for these Scholarships, which are intended to be one of the premier awards in Scotland, greatly outnumber the Scholarships available.

    Caledonian Scholarships
The Trust administers the Caledonian Scholarships on behalf of the RSEScotland Foundation (RSESF). The Scholarships are awarded and held under identical conditions as the Carnegie Scholarships, except that the Scholarships must be held in Scotland.

Saint Andrew's Society State of New York Scholarships :

The Trust administers the selection process for these Scholarships, which are awarded by the Society.

For the academic year 2010-2011, the Society may offer Scholarships to the total value of $40,000 to enable Scottish graduates to study for a year in the United States. Up to two Scholarships will be offered of not less than $20,000 each.

Applications forms can be obtained from the contact named in Annex A of the Particulars of Scholarships.

Maybe a moderator could edit the first post to include and organise scholarships by discipline and deadline. For example:

    Arts and Humanities:

31/05 - University of Oxford (blah blah)
07/06 - National University of Ireland, Galway (blah blah)
    13/06 - etc., etc..

    Social sciences:

    xx/xx -
    xx/xx -
    xx/xx -

    Sciences:

    etc., etc..

Maybe the categories could be hidden with tags and then extra categories (i.e. English, history, philosophy) could be provided so people only ever have to click what is relevant to them.

Erm, I can, but I don't really like messing with other people's posts without their permission when there's no moderation-related reason for doing so.:erm: So I'd rather wait to hear what tigermoth has to say on the matter. It's his thread, after all, and he may well want to maintain it himself...

I am not quite sure why I thought only a moderator could edit posts; suppose it was to get around the problem of tigermoth potentially going AWOL and killing the thread.

Cardiff University KESS Funded Studentship - Drugs from the sea

Nature has proved to be a rich source of chemically diverse organic compounds for drug development. Marine sponges are noted for the production of natural products that exhibit potent anti-cancer activity. It has been widely reported that many pharmaceutical companies are currently lacking lead compounds in their development pipelines and there has been a recent resurgence of interest in natural product chemistry to deliver new leads for the pharmaceutical pipeline. The aim of this project is to undertake a systematic study of marine natural products derived from sponges sourced from the eastern Mediterranean. The project will focus on the isolation, biological screening, and full chemical characterisation of compounds exhibiting interesting biological activity. The project will extend our previous experience of marine drug discovery, focussing on the anti-cancer and anti-microbial activity of marine sponge extracts. It will be supported by a collaboration with School of Earth and Ocean Sciences, Cardiff University and an industrial partnership with Sarum Biosciences to explore the use of counter-current chromatography as a preparative separation technique. Overall, the projects aims to identify and fully characterise sponge-derived organic natural products that could be potential lead compounds for pharmaceutical development.

Study of the Disposition of Airborne Particulate Matter at the Respiratory Epithelial Barrier

    University of East Anglia

Exposure to environmental airborne particulate matter has been associated with many lung diseases including fibrosis and lung cancer. The toxicity effects of these particles on the human respiratory system depend on their composition, size and shape and although many studies have been reported on this matter, there is little clarity on the physicochemical factors controlling the particle interactions with the respiratory epithelial barrier and their possible translocation to other body compartments. Here we aim to study the interaction of a series of different size airborne particles with components of the extracellular biological fluids encountered in the respiratory system (i.e. mucus, surfactants, proteins etc.) to gain insights into the adsorption processes occurring at the bio-nanointerface. In fact, the real nano-objects interacting with the respiratory epithelial cell barrier will be not the particles as observed in air particle sampling experiments but will instead be complexes of particles with adsorbed biological fluid components. Inhaled environmental particulates have been shown to cause pro-inflammatory events with increased chemokine production from lung epithelial cells, so it is crucial to understand if this cellular response is positively or negatively affected by the biomolecule (i.e. proteins, lipids, etc.) components of the particle-biomolecule complexes. The study proposed here will include the physicochemical characterization of airborne particulates collected in the UK and the determination of the type of biological molecules that associate with the particles after exposure to the lung lining fluids. With knowledge of the biological material adsorbed on the particles a series of in vitro cell culture experiments will characterise the biological response of lung epithelial cells to particulate matter.

    Funding Notes:

Funding may be available for UK/EU students. If funding is awarded for this project it will cover tuition fees and stipend for UK students. EU students may be eligible for full funding, or tuition fees only, depending on the funding source. International students will not be eligible for this funding however they are still welcome to apply for this project but would have to find alternative funding.
