ESRC North West Doctoral Training Centre PhD CASE Award: A collaboration between the University of Liverpool, Lancaster University and Liverpool Vision


An opportunity has arisen for the right candidate to study for a PhD through a joint collaboration between the University of Liverpool, Lancaster University and the economic development company, Liverpool Vision. The fully funded studentship is in the field of enterprise, small business and local economic development and would be suitable for those with a degree classification of 2:1 or above, in a social science discipline such as Business Studies, Economics, Geography, Sociology or similar and possibly a Masters degree or equivalent that demonstrates sufficient research knowledge to begin PhD study.

This PhD CASE Award is supported through the ESRC North West Doctoral Training Centre and is available on a 1+3 basis (MRes and PhD) or +3 basis (PhD) through the Business and Management pathway.

The research project will explore levels of enterprise and entrepreneurship in the Liverpool city-region. Although Liverpool has undergone economic regeneration in recent years and has attracted prestige initiatives such as the European Capital of Culture, which in turn has led to renewed levels of business confidence, the city-region continues to exhibit low levels of entrepreneurship and new business start up alongside high levels of deprivation. The research seeks to explore why Liverpool’s enterprise and entrepreneurial behaviour exists in the way it does and why it fails to translate into greater levels of wealth creation and distribution across the city-region. The critical approach adopted will help reimagine Liverpool’s future for enterprise.

Supervision for the research is provided from the University of Liverpool by Dr Alan Southern at the Management School and Dr Peter North in the Department of Geography, Professor Carole Howorth at Lancaster University Management School and Jerry Spencer at Liverpool Vision.

About the award
The Department of Modern Languages is delighted to offer excellent funding opportunities for exceptional researchers in the area of French Language and Culture studies. We are offering:

· One highly prestigious AHRC Doctoral Awards (open to UK/EU students only): all tuition fees paid for three years. UK students will also receive an annual maintenance grant for three years, which we expect to be £13,590 per year.

The Department of Modern Languages is one of the UK's leading centres for teaching and research in French, German, Hispanic, Italian, Russian, Film and Sexuality and Gender Studies. Research in the discipline of French is distinctive for the sheer range of expertise covered, including literature and culture from the medieval period to the present day, linguistics, visual culture and critical theory. We also contribute to a range of cross-disciplinary strengths, including Medieval Studies, Linguistics, Film, the Study of Sexuality and Gender and Translation Studies. Many staff in the Department of Modern Languages currently hold awards from Research Councils and similar funding bodies on subjects ranging from Discourses of Gender and Sexuality, variations in contemporary spoken French, Obscenity in Renaissance France, to costume-drama films of the 1950s.

How to apply
Entry criteria

For study in a language-based subject, students should have near native competence in that language and hold a Masters degree with at least a Merit, or international equivalent, in a languages/ literature based subject. For study in a non language-based or interdisciplinary subject , students should hold a Masters degree with at least a Merit or international equivalent, in a relevant discipline. Successful applications will normally also have a good first degree (at least 2.1 or international equivalent) in a relevant discipline and A* or A in A-Level French, or equivalent. If English is not your native language then you will also need to satisfy our English language entry requirements.

To apply

To be considered for this Doctoral award, you must complete an online web form where you must submit some personal details and upload a full CV, research proposal, transcripts, details of two academic referees and, if relevant, proof of your English language proficiency, by 9 July 2012.

In addition you must also ensure that your referees email their references to the Postgraduate Administrator at humanities-pgadmissions@exeter.ac.uk by 9 July 2012.
