We're also not allowed to have anything that could be construed as "pornography" (they made clear that they're using a very broad interpretation of that term). Mind you, I think that's just to scare us - my friend hasn't been prevented from using the Internet after he (drunkenly) tried to watch the whole of "2 Girls 1 Cup"...
Ahhh, quick question for you Is it possible to access PWF computer software via a similar method? (Preferably without Linux...)
Depends on the software. If it's on Windows on the PWF then no. If it's on Linux and command-line then you can just use it as normal through SSH (PuTTY). If it's on Linux and has a GUI it is possible but rather tricky to set up. Alternatively you can check if the software is available on SRCF Remote Desktop and that is easier to use.
To be fair, 2GB a day is quite a lot - I only managed to go over when I did a system update, or when I watched two football matches and two TV shows in a 24 hour period.

We weren't told about the no porn rule. But I thought the network was meant to be for 'academic' use anyway. So I think that would already cover it.

What can I say? I got bored one day and read everything in the "Information for Current Students" section.
I think the most amusing section was "Relationships". It started out by saying: "In the unlikely event [of you fancying your DoS]..." (emphasis added).

It's easily doable, although it can get expensive with trains. Aberdeen-Cambridge here, and we usually manage to see each other every couple weeks. We've always been LD, though. I imagine it's harder making the switch.
yeah, I think it'll just be hard making the switch. We were in the same year at Sixth Form together so we're both so used to seeing each other every single day. Saying that, we are used to spending about 6 or 7 weeks apart during Summer Holidays because both our families tend to travel. Aberdeen Cambridge- how long does that take? Well Durham Cambridge is about 4 hours on train I think.
I thought you were a guy I'm coming to the end of two years apart from my partner. Its definitely doable, however I think one thing essential to this working is commitment and closure. If the future is open ended I think it makes people less able to deal with making a short term sacrifice for the good of the long term. I think distance can also hurt relationships if you have any doubts about being together with that person in the future. But as long as you are both committed, then its not too bad. There are days/weeks where you really feel it, but most of the time life is so busy you don't feel it, and you can keep intimate through phone/skype/IM. Also the really long holidays at Cambridge mean you can see a lot of eachother.
Oh thanks, I love people thinking I'm a male. :P But don't worry, I could imagine that you thought I was a guy, given that I havent said anything particularly girly on TSR really. :P
We're both very committed to eachother, but I'm not sure if I can see us together in the long term and I think that may be one of the problems - I spent most of the summer trying to make reasons for why we shouldn't be together. Most of the time I was just over reacting to small things he did.
I think what makes it worse is that I'll be coming back to stay with my parents during the holidays (which is in the Middle East) but his family go back to the UK every holiday. So while he's there over holidays, I'll be over here... for the first couple of holidays anyway :/ Thus, it's all a little harder to see each other often.
I'm just going to give it a try though As my mum says, I dont want to end it just because I THINK it may not work out - so I'll give it a go and see how it is
Look at it this way... assuming you don't want to be alone all through uni, if you get a boyfriend in Cambridge, you'll be apart half the time during the holidays anyway. I have this, and it majorly sucks, but we try and make it work and I think it's going pretty damn well
So if you want a relationship in the next three years, it will be an LDR sometimes. If you like the boy you're with now, I'd say see how it goes. Don't discount it just because of distance. Durham isn't too far! (I'm doing Scotland-Devon!)
Yes, (as mentioned above) I'm going to try and not just end it because I THINK it may not work. Scotland-Devon? Respect! ahah, alright, Cambridge- Durham is a lot better.
I know your boyfriend was in Cambridge but... Do you think that I would ever be able to go to Durham during term time with the 6 day lectures?

I'm not going to lie... it would be quite difficult. I know someone (only one person though!) who had supervisions on a Sunday but even beside that, the amount of work is insane. I occasionally managed to get Sundays half-free, but the weekend is a really good time to catch up on supervision work, because you're likely to have labs or supervisions most other days. And if you play a sport, well, a match will take up half an afternoon, practices an evening or two, and you're time's gone again.
I don't know, you might need to work less than I did, but I haven't been home or left Cambridge at all during term time.

8 hours She actually lives even further north, so when I'm in Cambridge at she's not at uni, it's more like 10-11...

Distance definitely makes this kind of thing much easier, and so the relationship harder. Little things like tone if you're not on Skype, or even just things and events feeling different because you're so far apart.

(I know this wasn't directed to me, but...)
Long weekends (leave early to travel Friday, get back late Monday) are doable. There's few distractions from work on the train if need be, and I find it motivates me to get stuff done early so I'm not stressed when I'm away.

Thank you for that Plus I think most colleges require you to take permission to leave Cambridge during term don't they?
I think I'll just have to see how it goes. I've talked to him about it quite openly though, and he understands that I'll have super busy weeks especially with the 6 day lectures. It'll all work out... hopefully.

You're meant to 'keep term' and stay for 50-odd (56?) days per term, yeah. But if you're here before term starts and after it finishes, which is pretty typical, that's fine. Not to mention that, unless you're missing supervisions or practicals, nobody's likely to know or care especially much.

Obviously I didn't do NatSci so can't comment on that particular workload, but I was able to take pretty much every other Saturday off to go home to watch the football, as well as many weekends off for sports matches and practice. That time could've been substituted quite easily for visiting a long-distance partner (not that I feel I could do a LDR personally, but that's beside the point).

Yeah, no-one really cares about keeping term, just don't sign out when you leave

De jure perhaps, but not de facto in my experience.
Lucky my Physics supervision work took so long last year -_- WHY AM I TAKING IT THIS YEAR?!
