Hahaha, PRSOM! Is your dissertation supervisor who I think he is (Caius fellow, recently had a book published, incessantly sends out emails even on Christmas Day)? Yeah, I am apparently meant to be sending a second draft of my dissertation to my supervisor in the morning...this is not going to be fun! But I've managed to write 600 words in 2 hours, so maybe I will get it done...

The very same... I've had him since first year, but that was the first time I'd seen him not wearing a shirt! (he was wearing a teeshirt, although one of my friends I told about this encounter assumed that meant he was topless?! In the UL, lol)

Talking of which, seeing him this evening re: diss, so I should probably get a move on work-wise. Unlike you, I do not have multiple drafts, it's very much a non-linear work in progress :P

Hahaha, I can't imagine him not wearing a shirt  But I suppose he must wear T shirts sometimes.

Good luck with your dissertation! I have a diss supervision this afternoon and am starting to feel slightly nervous :frown:

Oh he's just the standard far left candidate. The other one running bankrupted an autonomous campaign and voted against having a women's officer on the union committee.

Yes she's my pick of the coordinator candidates (but I don't feel I know enough to tell others to vote for her). To be fair you speak to so many people whilst you're campaigning that you just get so tired and no longer know if you recognise someone from speaking to them on the campaign trail or if you actually know them from somewhere else.

I played basketball and frisbee yesterday after not doing any sport for about 3 weeks and I ache so much.

What evidence do you have of the bankrupting of the autonomous campaign?

I hope everyone's voting

When I read "not wearing a shirt" my first thought was also "was he topless?" before I worked out what you were saying.

I don't really know enough about the situation to pass judgement, but see the relevant comment thread here (the one started by Phil Brook).

Here's some to and fro between Akilah and last year's CUSU Coordinator (spoilered due to length, and with comments from others removed):

Spare a thought for the poor historian. People tend to assume that we know the whole of human history, when in reality we only know in depth specialised topics like the price of cows during the reign of Edward III.

No fear - 3 of my close mates are historians and I've accepted that they don't seem to know any history outside choice topics I don't care about. The most amusing is when they and others try to inform me when England formally added Wales to the State. None of them have gotten it right

Well, isn't the spoiler posts just a deliberate ploy, to sabotage her attempts at running for CUSU President?

Perhaps, which is why I can't pass judgement on it. But it's not something that's only come to light recently -- it was quite a big deal when it happened, regardless of whose fault it was.

But then why is the language of the commentator "is it true"... also it seem like people are expecting her to have put that in her manifesto.

Perhaps the overspend was accidental etc. We have probably all overspent on things in our lives...

Oh, the comment that started the thread was definitely there to sabotage her campaign, which is why I didn't include it in the spoiler -- what I put in the spoiler just seemed to be a more factual (since Alex was the CUSU Coordinator) and balanced (since it included Akilah's point of view) account of the situation... which is, I presume, what you wanted.
Urgh, completely lacking all motivation ATM... :frown:

Tbh, I was part of the campaign itself.

I worked under Akilah etc, not that I could see the full expiditure details of the campaign. She put a lot of work into that role though, so she would be good at CUSU president.

I think it's getting that way around here. I've certainly had several people imply I had nothing to whinge about because I was consistently getting seven hours, because they're only getting four.
Even if you did ten hours of work a day (which imo would be a waste of your time at university) you would still be able to sleep seven hours a day and have another seven left over. That would leave a couple of hours a day for eating, etc., a couple of hours a day for sport, the ability to go to the bar every evening and the ability to go out properly a couple of times a week. If someone wants to prioritise other things over sleep then that's fine, and you do sometimes get last minute deadlines, but if you really want to sleep then I don't see what's stopping you.
I witnessed a medic and a mathmo comparing notes the other day and it was a little bit painful...
Don't listen to them: mathmos don't get any work. 12 hours of lectures, two hours of supervisions and 20 hours of example sheets works out as significantly less than a full time job even before you consider travel time.

The lucky mathmos need only 20 hours to do example sheets, I'm in the at least 30 hours category.

You could always lower your standards. (Saying that to girls has never worked before, but I remain optimistic.)

Maybe I'm just reading this the wrong way, but I think you are out of line here.

And that would result in not looking at all the questions and finishing basically none. I think it's common decency to at least make a good attempt all the questions.

http://www.cusu.cam.ac.uk/elections/2012/#EC

20:00, Monday 5th March: Elections Committee have released the following statement:

The Elections Committee has received a complaint about a recent statement made by Akilah Jeffers on her Facebook event concerning her time as President of the Black Students' Campaign (now the Black and Minority Ethnic Campaign) in 2011-12.

The Elections Committee does not see it as its role to rule on the veracity or otherwise of individual statements made by candidates in the election. That is the role we hope is played by vigorous campaigning by all candidates and their campaigners, holding each other's statements to account in the public arena.

However, to clarify any factual queries, we have made enquiries of CUSU's full time staff and officers, and can provide the following factual information to clarify these issues. We can confirm that:

* In March February 2010-11, the total amount spent by the Black Students' Campaign was £2289.65. The total income of the Black Students' Campaign was £400. The overall budget deficit in this period was therefore £1889.65, compared to the £500 we budgeted to spend above income (the 'budgeted loss'). This is the worst financial performance in 2008-12.

* It was not the case that the Black Students' Campaign recorded the highest level of sponsorship in the history of the campaign in 2010-11. No record of sponsorship deals which have to be formally signed off by the CUSU Coordinator could be found for 2010-11.

* In 2009-10, the Black Students' Campaign recorded a 'budget surplus' of £414.56. However, surpluses do not and have never rolled over and are not kept in reserve for specific campaigns in the future. Campaigns may only spend what is budgeted for them in the annual CUSU budget. Part time officers are expected to be aware of and manage their own budget.
