Re: Lifting, boxing and all the restDunno, the idea of seeing if I can get significantly stronger by getting bigger is tempting... though it would mean that I would have even more weight to lose, come boxing season lol (though I doubt I'll have any bouts until winter).(Original post by redbuthotter)
Pretty solid still. Impressive how high the target weights are... I'm unsure if I could press a 50kg block overhead lol.
Are you going to bulk to 75 to be more competitive?
I think I'll try to eat more, I know my protein intake especially is really uneven and generally a bit too low. -
Re: Lifting, boxing and all the rest
Pretty nice session today, trained more strongwoman stuff with Sally (she's the one doing the +75kg category, did her first comp the previous year)
mob, roll
snatch press:
20 2x5
25 2x5
30 2x5
snatch balance:
30 2x5
40 1x5
45 1x3
50 2x2
50 x1+OHS
log (comp size, 40kg):
x1
x1 + 4 push press
x1 + 5 pp
x1 + 5 pp (failed 6th)
x1 + 4 pp (failed 5)
farmers walk (about 10m maybe, if even that, not enough space):
32.7 x1
52.7 x2
62.7 x1
GHR 2x10
deadlift (practising setup):
40 1x5
60 1x5
70 4x1
80 5x1
85 x1
90 x1
smaller log:
30 x3
35 x2
40 x3
45 x2
50 x press fail
40 1x5
rope pulls with 16kg KB set up with the power rack 4x5
med ball (6kg) slams 3x20
A decent session. I reckon working on my deadlift setup will benefit me in farmers walk as well. 62.7 was relatively easy, once I got it off the floor.
The rope pulling was pretty lol. We used thick rope, thrown over the pullup bar of a power rack, and decided to start with the 60kg KB....couldn't get it to move more than just off the ground, even when putting all our weight on the rope. Then Sally could do 24kg, but I couldn't do it all the way. 16kg was a good weight to practise the technique on.
We also tried out some block "cleaning". It's even more awkward than the log, ugh.
Also I don't know if the log press might just be trying for the highest weight int he 75s, and not repping. if yes, then i should be able to get 50 by comp time. -
Re: Lifting, boxing and all the rest
Had a way too long break in lifting, but been generally active.
Taking about 2 weeks of work to study for resits, so should have time to go lift almost daily.
Today did some more strongman stuff
60kg farmers walks 2 rounds of 4x10m
70kg farmers walks few bits and pieces, grip get failing
80kg couldn't get it up yet...
atlas stones to a platform (for the first time)
repping 40kg, just getting used to it.. I've got the top movement down easy, I just need to work on my setup and getting it to my lap/hips.
So much harder than clean&pressing the log or even snatching lol, it's just so awkward.
finished with some bent over rows, didn't really have time for more
Tomorrow NEEDS to squat, and might do some lifts and static holds with the farmers, and maybe some pressing with the bar. -
Re: Lifting, boxing and all the restYeah 40 is the smallest, then they got at least 60, 70, 80, 100 and up.(Original post by Michael XYZ)
Is this at PC? Did not know they had 40kg stones...
40/60/90 in my comp lol If I sort my technique, I might manage 60. -
Re: Lifting, boxing and all the restI think you're spending way too much time lifting. If you're still doing this for the boxing then I'd recommend changing your training up... lifting can actually be damaging to your punching because a punch is a snapping action, not a pushing one. I've seen little guys punch harder than big guys simply because they snap their punches and have great technique and speed.(Original post by aivi)

I'm just saying, be careful, you don't need to be 'strong' in the conventional sense to KO someone. A well timed punch from a weak person with a good snap and good speed will really rock someone. -
Re: Lifting, boxing and all the restI'm well aware of that, but it was only at the beginning that I did it for boxing, then I discovered that I loved weightlifting for its own sake.(Original post by Dr. Bassman)

While I still love boxing and it's my "main" sport (partly due to the fact that I'm running our uni club this upcoming year), I want to be a well-rounded athlete. Since I don't have any wild dreams about competing in the ABAEs or lifting in the olympics, I don't feel the need to be as specific with my training.
In general I just want to get healthier and fitter, and I'm just focusing on building my strength atm.
Also note, that I haven't been boxing for months, since our club ended training for the year around easter. So of course when I go back to uni and boxing, I simply won't have as much time to lift. Then I'll be cutting back on volume and doing more power-based lifts like the oly lifts. -
Re: Lifting, boxing and all the restFair enough, what uni is this at by the way? I know what you mean by training for the sport but then it sort of becoming a thing of its own. I started heavy cardio cycling for martial arts but then became obsessed with improving my distances(Original post by aivi)

What martial arts do you do? -
Re: Lifting, boxing and all the restOh nice. I do kickboxing/boxing/muay thai and judo/BJJ. I prefer not to think of them as individual 'sports' though. They all lead up to me developing as a fighter. The only one I actively compete in is kickboxing, the rest are things I just train in but don't have any real intentions of competing in.

Re: Lifting, boxing and all the rest
Yesterday was a pretty basic session.
Squatting was pretty bad, felt weak.
Happy with the log, now to just maybe get 60kg. 50kg was surprisingly easy, when I focused on making the dip&drive sharp. Also did parallel stance instead of split stance like before, easier to drive off the floor.
And felt pretty good to do OHS and snatches again.
standard mob, have started doing more leg swings and stuff in addition to foamrolling
back squat:
40 1x5
50 1x5
60 2x5
70 2x3
warmup upper body with bar and small log
comp size log:
40 x1+5p, 1, 1+3p, 1
45 x1+2, 1
40 x1+2, 1+3, 1+5, 1+5, 1+5
45 x1
47.5 x1
50 x1,1 PB
SB + OHS:
40kg 5x1
some light 15/25kg snatches
medball slams (6kg) 10x10 with 15s rest inbetween -
Re: Lifting, boxing and all the restIt's fun, but learning the technique can be frustrating...(Original post by Becca)
I've been doing loads more leg swings and stuff like that as a warmup, I find it much more effective and it doesn't take that long. Strongman training seems so much fun, there's nowhere to train it in Oslo though
I also just need to spend some time in the proper positions like bottom of squats, there was a massive difference between snatching before and after the ohs! -
Re: Lifting, boxing and all the restYeah I can def imagine that being hard! It's so different from pressing or jerking a barbell.(Original post by Motorbiker)
Jealous of the log practice.Very strong.
I had to go into the comp with no practice and struggled lots.
Need to convince my gym to spend 200+ quid on a log so i can play with it. In b4 denial.
At our gym the 40kg comp size log (there's a bigger, 80kg one I think?) has rotating handles, which is not the best thing, when you're looking for stability. -
Re: Lifting, boxing and all the restAt the gym Aivi and I go to, this is actually a legit request. If you want something, even something retardedly expensive like a weightlifting bar (in the neighbourhood of 1k) it's ok.(Original post by Motorbiker)

Re: Lifting, boxing and all the restYour gym sounds awesome. Closest gym to me with a log is the one i competed at so 45 mins/30 miles away.(Original post by aivi)

Even more jealous. My gym is a uni gym so very cheap and not caring about the free weights really. Lucky that we have a trap bar and the 3 oly bars that we do have...(Original post by The Blind Monk)

Unless i can get everyone i know at the gym to all request the log as well it won't happen...
Tbh they've had a bent bar for like 8 months now and still not even replaced that...
