Durham Applicants Thread 2012
Welcome to the University of Durham forum: where prospective and current students can discuss everything from the differences between colleges to the nightlife, an abundance of Rahs to the Stockton campus.

Re: Durham Applicants Thread 2012According to Collingwood's JCR website, 28th September. That's when the internationals arrived last year.(Original post by NYU2012)
Do we (by we, of course, I mean anyone) know when orientation is or when international students are expected to be on campus?

Re: Durham Applicants Thread 2012Hey I'm also from London and still having a hard time deciding between Durham and KCL :/ What made you choose Durham as in the city? I just feel it's a bit quiet for my liking. I've got up till 6pm tonight(Original post by Brand New Eyes)
Oh but, but,
if you're paying for it how are you expected to move out
-
Re: Durham Applicants Thread 2012You're not paying the same weekly rate. The way they work it out is that they work out a weekly catered rate and multiply it by 29, and then work out a weekly 'storage but no residence' rate and times by 4.(Original post by Brand New Eyes)

Re: Durham Applicants Thread 2012As I said above, they don't cost the 38 weeks on the same basis.(Original post by Brand New Eyes)
29 week accommodation
33 week let?
Thanks, hmm interesting 7.75% increase for the 33 week and 3.05% for 38 weeks
The holiday rates are charged at a lower rate as you aren't getting food.
So if the price of food goes up, then the weekly term-time catered cost goes up but the weekly non-catered (holiday) cost stays the same.
So the 33 week let shows a higher overall % increase than the 38 week let. -

Also they're tricksy bastards; for the Easter holidays, all residents in my college in non-refurbished rooms will be forced to move everything out for the first weekend for a pittance. Obviously it's going to be highly impractical for anyone except a tiny minority to live in college accommodation over the holidays, so essentially they've been forced to pay for something they can't use. -
Re: Durham Applicants Thread 2012My choice was more to do with the course/Bath's weird term times rather than Durham itself. yes it is quiet but I wanted to get away from the city so I can't help you there I'm afraid.(Original post by Phenylethylamine_)

Think of it this way, you're only at uni for just over half the year so there's plenty of time to be in London. London is not only expensive but also very busy, I've lived here my whole life so
I'm excited for a change. On the whole I would say Durham also has a much better reputation overall.
you have 26 minutes now -
Re: Durham Applicants Thread 2012ah thanks! I'll search that up now(Original post by undergradstudent)
Yes catered fees are the same at all colleges.
I posted on here a few weeks ago giving a detailed explanation of what 33 and 38 week lets mean, so if you search this thread or the forum you should find it

Re: Durham Applicants Thread 2012
Why is it so long until we start??!
Anyway, this is a bit off-topic but does anyone know when we can apply for student bank accounts? i'm not sure if they just start in august after results. i've got an unconditional offer so i'm not waiting for results, i've got a definite place. Do I still have to wait? -

My experience is that they're not too strict if they know what's going on with you.

I suggest going to the bank and asking.

Re: Durham Applicants Thread 2012We asked yesterday. They said you need to take in a letter from the Uni with your start date and end date which you likely will not have till August if you are conditional however you can open a current account if you are over 18 and this can be changed to a student account with student attached benefits in August(Original post by canŵio)

Re: Durham Applicants Thread 2012Send them the picture in your sig - it'll distract them enough to sneak in...(Original post by Oh my Ms. Coffey)
Just sent my application, awaiting a rejection.
On a more serious note, don't worry about it.

Re: Durham Applicants Thread 2012You'll find thousands of posts over the years asking exactly this question. The answer is usually 'yes'.(Original post by Oh my Ms. Coffey)
Does Durham normally take long to reply? -
Re: Durham Applicants Thread 2012You may (or may not) get a letter of acknowledgement from your college but you won't hear anything from the university until your offer becomes unconditional ie. whenever you get your results.(Original post by vedderfan94)
Should I have got an acknowledgement that I firmed Durham? I firmed them on the 9th of May and haven't heard anything so I was just curious

Has anyone applied for History and Russian because I'm applying for that course next year but don't know if I'd have any chance of getting into Durham so I have so many questions to ask
