Hi Amy,

Yes, I had my assessment centre on the 5th, I think I know who you are! Are you the Amy that had cabbage and lemon juice? The offer was for MFL (Spanish). Look forward to seeing you again at the summer institute!

Best,
Laura

Hi! There's some really useful info on this thread. Thanks to all who are posting advice!

I'm currently in my second year of uni and hoping to apply in the next cohort, for 2013. I'll also be applying for a masters to begin in 2013. I want to apply next year because if I'm unsuccessful in getting a place on the right masters course, or attaining funding, then I'd love to go straight into the TF programme. But if I get the option of a masters, it'd be quite nice to defer for a year if I was offered a place. Are TF always happy to defer? Or do you need special circumstances?

Also, is there any disadvantage in applying straight from uni? This is something I'd love to do and don't really want to waste time on other projects immediately after graduation.

I'm eligible for Primary (my preference), Maths and English. When I apply next year, will I be disadvantaged if I put Primary as my preference, even though they seem much more keen to fill spaces for Maths and English? I'd be over the moon to teach those subjects too, but really do have a preference for primary teaching...

Thanks in advance for any help you can offer!

Hi Becbec,

In response to your questions, it is possible to defer, however this is only usually possible quite early on in the application cycle. You're recommended to apply early if this is something you are considering.

There are plenty of people straight out of university. I was at an event yesterday where loads of people were still in their final year. As long as you can demonstrate the skills required at the AC, you'll be offered a place.

You may get offered Maths or English but if you have applied early on in the application cycle, it is sometimes possible to change your subject. Again, this depends on circumstances and how many places are left and your situation.

I hope this helps.

Hey I'm a reapplicant and got invited to my assessment centre on the 25th Jan... already started stressing about summer insitute though. My brother is getting married this summer and hindu weddings are spread over the space of like a week. the week in question is the last week of july, which is going to be the part of summer institute based in warwick. i live in cov so i know it is travelling distance, just wondering if anyone could tell me what sorta hours the summer institute is and if i'd be able to go home and take part in the evening celebrations form weds to fri and the full saturday sunday. I really dont wanna miss out on this important family occasion... :frown:

This is probably the stupidest question but I can't find an answer on the website... if you are aiming to be a teacher in the long term, does doing TF give you proper Qualified Teacher Status, just like on a PGCE? Thanks

Yeah, you get QTS and you even get a full PGCE after the first year

+1

Thanks!

Do you have to do the same amount of academic evaluation/essays/assessment stuff as well?

I passed the assessment centre last August and have recently been allocated my region, Yorkshire and the Humber. Though this was my first choice and Teach First have done everything that I have asked my preferences have changed for both financial and personal reasons. What do you think is the chance of changing from my 1st to second choice at this stage?
Obviously i'm going to do the scheme regardless, it would just make things a lot easier.

Anyone got any experiences of changing region?

Thanks

Nicola

There's no guide on their website, I was wondering at what time each year their applications open? How soon should you send it in to stand a good chance in a competitive subject like English?

Applications open in June and they hold assessment centres and give out places as they go, so if you're applying, especially in a competitive field like English, I would say as early as possible. If they have none left they may offer you a deferred place for the following year - but early application is best. That way if you don't get in you can always apply for another option like a PGCE or GTP later in the year.

Hi

I asked this question at my assessment centre and the guy said that missing a weekend wouldn't be a problem, he said a few people may have to miss some days due to family commitments and that this won't matter as long as it's not a whole week.

I'm not sure about the weekday evenings, I think the summer institute is quite full on and goes from 9am in the morning till about 8pm at night (including socialising) but i'm not sure how important the evenings are... try emailing them to ask, I'm sure they would be happy to help

I think you can apply throughout the year similar to some PGCE courses. I applied back in Sept and was rejected 10days after I applied, so you know pretty soon whether you have a place or not. On the website it tells you how many vacancies they have left per subject so depending on what you want to teach in you would need to go by that.
Good Luck!
Hi, just curious, what happens if you don't end up getting a 2.1? since this is part of the conditional offer but if you meet all other requirments and just miss out of a 2.1 does the offer get taken away from you?

thanks
Hi all

I completed my Primary SKA in November, and have ONLY just got an email back from them.

apparently some of my answers are too short (they're all the maximum word count!!!) and my Action Plan needs to be more specific. I'm not really sure what I should do to make it more specific.

I know it's a bit cheeky, but would anyone be able to give me an idea of the things they wrote for their action plan that was accepted, just so I can have some idea of what they want?

I am so unbelievably stressed about this, I have so much uni work and exam revision to be doing right now that I literally just burst into tears after reading the email from them, and it normally takes a LOT for me to cry!

I would really really appreciate any help that anyone could give me with this.

Also does anyone know, if I resubmit and then fail it again, is that it? Will my offer then be withdrawn?

Thank you

PM me your entire SKA, I'll be happy to look over it :yep:

Hey,

In theory you'll get thrown off or offered a different subject if you fail but this has apparently only happened twice ever. When i did my action i split it up into 3 bits - identifying areas i needed to work on so i went through the curriculum and then how i could make my academic weaknesses better and then how i could make my teaching abilities better.
