Re: Accommodation: Your Questions Asked! (NOW WITH PICTURES!!!)I think C5 has always been single sex! And its definately red! You are lucky to have howden really, its known to be a sociable block - although im sure this may just be part myth. I made some amazing friends, so sad to leave them this year now I've graduated.(Original post by names-are-hard)
Hello mollymustard
You lived in Howden C4 right? I've just been told I'm in Howden C5, do you know if it is usually single sex? Or do they mix things up every year? And I guess my room will be red right?
I'd be grateful to know anything you can tell me!
I'm ridiculously excited!
Any questions about what to bring etc please drop me an email! -
Re: Accommodation: Your Questions Asked! (NOW WITH PICTURES!!!)Thanks for replying! I think I may indeed drop you an email.(Original post by mollymustard)

Also, it seems that C5 is mixed this year, how odd. So it seems they are mixing things up a bit this year.Last edited by names-are-hard; 03-08-2011 at 10:02. -
Re: Accommodation: Your Questions Asked! (NOW WITH PICTURES!!!)
So I've been doing a bit of searching around for more accomodation photos, mainly because I wanted to be a bit nosey as I couldn't remember exactly what they were like from the open day I went to. Also, I wanted to see if I could find out what colour my room was going to be, haha :P
Anyway, I thought I'd compile a list of links to the other photos so other people could look through them too.
This is probably one of the best things I found. It has those 360 degree photos of how some of the rooms are in Ranmoor and Endcliffe, as well as normal photos, information and videos. It shows an example of the en-suite rooms, deluxe rooms, shared bathroom rooms, the kitchen/living areas, as well as an example of a studio and the family accomodation.
http://www.accommodation.group.shef.ac.uk/
Theres also this, which has links to PDFs with information about all the different accomodation. They have a few photos on them. They also say about the size of the flats in each building.
http://accommodation.dept.shef.ac.uk...self-catering/
And heres a list of photos from TSR:
A green 8 person flat; photos of Kitchen/Living area and hallway.
A red 10 person flat in Froggatt; photos of the en-suite bedroom and kitchen/living area.
Photos of the kitchen/living area of a red 10 person flat in Froggatt.
More photos of a red en-suite room.
Photos of a blue en-suite room in Rivelin.
Photo of a yellow en-suite room.
Photo of one of the larger bedrooms in one of the houses with a shared bathroom. (18 Oakholme Road)
They then posted a little bit of information about the room/building afterwards.
This is a link to an album of photos of the outside of the buildings in Endcliffe/Ranmoor - although a lot of them are taken at night!
And some other things:
This is a link to a booklet from 2008 if you go through it there are some photos of the rooms etc.
This guy has uploaded a YouTube video of his en-suite room and the kitchen/living area of a yellow 6 person flat in Endcliffe - with a rather messy kitchen!
You can also do Flickr searched for Endcliffe Village and Ranmoor Village. Although most photos are of the outside of buildings.
Edit:
Photos of a yellow en-suite room in Curbar, Endcliffe.

Re: Accommodation: Your Questions Asked! (NOW WITH PICTURES!!!)
For those with the luxury of having your own washing machine, this is how to use it: http://service.candy-domestic.co.uk/...s/pdfs/CMD.pdf
It's a nifty set and forget washer/dryer combo. :3
Bonus protips:
(a) When you move in, clean the detergent drawer thoroughly and then run a 90° program with a small amount of detergent to disinfect the machine.
(b) Keep the door open when not using the machine to prevent microorganisms from building up inside due to lack of ventilation. -
Re: Accommodation: Your Questions Asked! (NOW WITH PICTURES!!!)Agreed! The drawer was super nasty at my friend's dorm room because she didn't clean it and DON'T CLOSE the door when you are finsihed; it is worth it. You don't want the rubber lining to start going nasty and green :/. I'm sure it made her clothes smell funny too :/(Original post by avila)

Water quality report (covers Endcliffe and Ranmoor): http://www.yorkshirewater.com/extra-...203AY§ion=
Hardness is only dH 2.38. That's really soft water compared to what you get down in the south. In Reading, it was dH 15.2 and water was pretty much undrinkable without a filter.
Enjoy your tea without disgusting patches of limescale. :3 -
Re: Accommodation: Your Questions Asked! (NOW WITH PICTURES!!!)
Apologies if this has been asked, but what is the key situation at Endcliffe?
For example, a friend at Leeds had a swipe card to get into their accommodation complex, then a key to get into her block of flats, and a different key to get into her room itself. I was just wondering what it was like in Endcliffe?
Cheers

You'll have a swipe card or key fob that allows access to the building. From there on, you have one key that opens both the flat door and your room door. -
Re: Accommodation: Your Questions Asked! (NOW WITH PICTURES!!!)Sheffield water is really nice. I went back for a night out at corp on wednesday and forgot how nice the water is to drink(Original post by avila)

A rip-off or a steal? I feel like it's the former. -
Re: Accommodation: Your Questions Asked! (NOW WITH PICTURES!!!)I think they're mainly aimed at international students/people coming by train. If your parents are taking you in their car you'd be better off buying your stuff from Ikea/Wilkinsons/supermarkets etc.(Original post by avila)

Re: Accommodation: Your Questions Asked! (NOW WITH PICTURES!!!)My bet is on it's a rip-off. The university sells a pack of pots and pans as well and I bought that last year. God, that set is crap. Looks all nice and shiny, but their heat tolerance is so low - I've only used one of the pots on low heat for only a few times and every time I ended using it there was metal peeling off of the bottom (on the inside) and now there are these bright orange patches. I don't know what the pots are made of, but it looks like oxidized iron to me (although I've never seen rust that is so neon orange). I've also commented on Sheffield's bedding pack (I think I did that in the Sheffield Accommodation thread). Basically, my experience with these starter packs is that if it sounds too good to be true then it probably is. I bought the packs straight from the university, but I don't see why it should be any different with independent companies (prices are the same, so...).(Original post by avila)

I'm coming from mainland Europe (and by plane) as well and having been through it last year, here is my suggestion - take some plastic containers and some plastic cutlery (actually, I'm only taking plastic knives and the rest is normal stuff). You can buy stuff that you can cook without much preparation, such as frozen French fries that you only need to heat up in the oven, or some pizza or order takeout. Then use the plastic containers for storing leftovers. This way you won't have to go out to buy kitchen stuff on the day you arrive (which will be hectic as it is). The plastic cutlery is self-explanatory and you may have no choice but to take plastic knives - I know that my airline does not allow knives or scissors with blades longer than 6cm on the plane (not even in the registered luggage). So be sure to check your airline's restrictions before packing knives, forks and such. -
Re: Accommodation: Your Questions Asked! (NOW WITH PICTURES!!!)Post is delivered to each flat - there is a letterbox for each flat at the main door to the block. The postman will ring the doorbell and if someone is in your flat they have to go down to fetch it.(Original post by avila)
Something I haven't found a definite answer to:
What happens if you get a parcel? (Amazon, etc.) Does the reception keep it and notify you? There was an older accommodation A-Z booklet that said they won't accept parcels...
What are you studying?
Thanks for the pictures!
