Aww, Winchester is top of my list as well  But now I really cannot decide between there and Nottingham and unless I really don't like Notts, I'll probably go there. Haven't been to either but will visit in February. Winchester sounded lovely tho. If Nottingham hadn't offered me a place, I'm pretty sure I'd go there. I have a friend who does Ed at Winchester and he loves it

the main difference is that when you graduate from Nottigham the degree will look great on your CV as Nottingham is a top-class uni, but Winchester is one of those 'ordinary' (but perfectly good) places no one really knows about outside the uk

Yep, I know. That's why I' think I'll go to Nottingham. I'd just get a "better" degree for the same amount of money etc. I was really keen on Winchester as a town and I've been emailing with the staff there and they seem absolutely lovely... but it's just that I never expected to get into a really good uni such as Nottingham and I don't even feel like I deserve it so it's a top chance and I'd be stupid to turn them down...

mmm, that's the trouble really, you can only go to one! I've got unconditional offers from all my choices and would love to go at least 3.5 of them
Yeah, my brother is going there in September doing Film Tech and Creative Writing. Campus is attractive and compact in a beautiful location within walking distance of the city centre. He is really looking forward to it!

To study American Studies, you would be stupid to turn down a place at Nottingham. It's something like the second best American Studies department in the country and the course is extremely enjoyable. It's got a better reputation on the whole and I can thoroughly recommend both the course and the university.

Have you done that course?

And I know, I know !!! I'm saying I am not turning them down! But I'm also saying that it's a tough choice and purely based on reason not gut. Plus, I haven't been to either and if I visit Nottingham and find I HATE it, then I don't think I'll go there just cos of their rep. But I probably won't hate it as it's been praised quite a bit on here and I really want an enjoyable uni experience

So tell me, what's so great about the course/uni?

Btw, apparently it's 8th for American Studies  Where did you hear it was second?

Found it

And that actually makes it first, because Warwick's American Studies degree is 4 years and not only the US but all of the Americas and I wanted a three year US based degree. So Nottingham seems to be best for that  I'm even more flattered I got in now  lol

Yeah, I'm doing English and American Studies at Notts at the moment. I'm really enjoying American Studies. It's a lot of work with all the reading and stuff but I find it well organised, demanding and really interesting. The lecturers are good and seminars are excellent. I can't recommend it highly enough.

Sounds awesome  Can you say something about the compulsory modules in the first year? What are they like? And what's the reading on? Thanks

Well, because I'm joint honours I only have half of the American Studies degree I think. For me, there are two compulsory modules; American Literature and American History. American Literature is 20 credits and History is 10.

For American Literature I am expected to produce two 1,500 word essays (50% of module) in my first term and sit an exam (50% of module). There's a lot of reading involved; Moby Dick, Huck Finn, Fred Douglass, Emerson and Thoreau etc. and it can get quite stressful (read one text per week). I haven't read a single text yet, but I got away with a 2.i on my first essay by selectively reading parts of my chosen text for the essay (you get about 20 questions to choose from). I have two one-hour lectures per week and one one-hour long seminar. You are expected to discuss what youve read in the seminar. Having not read the texts I usually sit there with my head down but they're really lively and helpful.

History is also really interesting, although I only get two one-hour long lectures per week because it's only worth 10 credits (you'll probably have it as 20 credits and so will have a seminar as well). The lectures are clear and well planned. I'm expected to produce one 1,500 word essay (I think, it might be 2,000) and sit an exam, with both being worth 50% each. I got a 2.i on my exam without attending lectures so you could say the history module is fairly easy. You cover things like the civil war, reconstructions, the American city, expansion, colonisation etc.

I hope that helps . Honestly, you'll love the campus when you visit and you'd be mad not to come here.

Sounds really good  Yeah, well, my friends think I am mad (for other reasons :p: ) but I don't think I am that mad  Thanks for the detailed info, too  Sounds like I'd love it! I think I might have read a lot of the stuff already actually  Do you think you could pm me the reading list for American lit in the first year? I'd love to see what I've read or maybe start reading stuff now as I'm on my gap year  Doesn't matter if it won't be the same for me next year, I'd still love to look through it
My mother considered studying there as a mature student (as opposed to an immature student), but gave it up because of the distance and timetabling - she has to drive just as far to go to her current course, but less often.
